Social Profile:

Valerie Thao brings fresh Asian cuisine to Willernie Minnesota. Nestled across the street from the post office and just off Stillwater Road, the décor is reminiscent of the days when Olive Joe’s served up their Italian and American food, but the cozy spot is now home to Valerie’s Asian Cuisine, a one-woman show run by Valerie Thao. Thao’s family immigrated to the U.S. from Thailand in the midst of civil unrest in the 1990s, bringing fresh home-cooked flavors and her mother’s traditional family recipes with them. Thao eventually settled in Fresno, California, working at a grocery store and picking up cooking techniques from the hot bar deli staff there . In 2014 Thao moved her family to Minnesota and in 2018 Valerie’s Asian Cuisine opened.

Very good food. If you’re looking to have traditional Americanized “Chinese” food you might be disappointed because this is fresh entrees made by a wonderful woman from Thailand and her family. Chicken pad Thai was the star of our meal nice flavor with fresh bok Choi, carrots and sprouts. Forgot to photograph the full entrees which had quite a bit on the plate. Our dinner was a very pleasant experience.

I don’t understand why this place is never busy when we visit because the food is SO GOOD.

My husband and I live in Mahtomedi. We decided to try this place. Outside of the building was absolutely filled with overgrown weeds and trash. We decided to still go in. Half of the “restaurant “ is a pile of stuff that belongs in a garage. But where this really takes a turn, is with child labor laws. Our waitress was maybe 10!? She was a sweet little girl but why is she working??? Also, there were 2 other little girls laying on the floor behind the cash register area. One kept coughing the entire time we were in there. The other one was pouring cough syrup into the cap for her. Our 10 yo waitress also rung us up. The tables were dirty, one booth had children’s toys in it, and there were plants everywhere trying camouflage the messy hoarding of piles of items that should not be laying around a restaurant (OSHA). The food was just ok. Lots of oil. It was hard to be there and get past what we were seeing. I would not go back and have thought about making a police report for those kids.

Amazing portion sizes. The Pho, the wontons, and the fried rice are amazing!

Given the overwhelmingly positive reviews I was disappointed. I ordered Lo Mein and the only flavors were canola oil and black pepper. I got the “special” Lo mein but there was just a single piece of steak among the chicken and shrimp. (The chicken meat was good quality though.) The egg rolls were small and tasted as if they could have been frozen. Basically, it was what I imagine American Chinese food tasting like in the 50s.

We stopped in and had the orange chicken which was incredibly tender and lacked the heavy batter most places have, the batter was light and delicious. We also had the Pad Thai chicken. It was delicious spicy and yummy. But the best was the Maui smoothie. We split the smoothie and it was enough for both of us.

Not good at all. I live locally and have tried to give this place a chance disappointment after disappointment. It’s garbage. Gross. Not good at all. Do not eat here unless you want to eat something you’re not expecting or wanting. The orange chicken was I’m hoping deep fried potato’s this last time but I’m not sure.

The absolute worst food ever! Everything is soggy and gross, no sweet and sour sauce for cream cheese wonton, who serves them without sauce, if you pay and ask for extra chicken or beef you will never get. Third time and last, literally three pieces of beef when ordered extra beef, all veggies and barely that! BEWARE ANYONE WHO EATS HERE!!!!

Stopped here tonight on a recommendation. We were greeted right away from Valerie. The menu had lots of options but not an overwhelming selection. They offer Vietnamese food along with many American choices.
