I’m a 36 year old local man who took my 25 year old girlfriend to Urja. She is from Pittsburgh and has a lot more experience with Indian food. For an appetizer we ordered the Samosa Chaat. I’ve never even heard of this but apparently a samosa is a fried pastry filled with spiced vegetables and/or meat. In this dish the samosas are heavily topped with things like diced tomatoes, onions, chick peas, cilantro, and covered in a slightly spicy chutney sauce, not real hot though. IT IS SO GOOD. For entrees I ordered the Urja Chicken Special, and I can’t remember exactly what she ordered but it was basically a type of spicy curry chicken and onions. I ordered mine at a hot level of 5 and that was about as hot as Franks Red Hot but a completely different flavor of course. My girl ordered a 10 which was crazy hot but also very good. Both entrees were amazing and we will be going back. Oh, and there is a small soup and salad bar complementary with your meal.
The restaurant itself is a little weird considering it’s in the old Holiday Inn building. However the tables are nice and fancy, as well as the Indian décor. Service was quick and friendly although there were only 8 people in the place including us, and that was on a Saturday night at 7pm. A woman (who is probably the owner) came over to ask us about the food and our experience. She was extremely friendly and genuinely concerned about our experience. Great place to go if you’ve never tried Indian food and would like to, or if you already appreciate it.

More than GREAT! Been there twice, on 2 consecutive Mondays, recently! Johnstown, you have a jewel in your midst! Don’t lose this wonderful restaurant, full of wonderful people, great service, atmosphere, interesting art; a CULTURAL EXPERIENCE! The BEST Authentic Indian Cuisine I’ve had!
Dare I say, I felt so ‘clean’, after leisurely dining at Urja?!

I really want to give them 5 stars and the food was good enough that I would have but the service was BAD! I’ve been twice. The first time with a friend and my 5 year old. Service was slow and the wait staff didn’t know enough to answer my questions. At least we got our food. The next time I went I took my husband and five year old. It took 10 minutes to be seated and we waited and waited to be served. We have never lefted a place after getting our drinks but it took so long we did this time. We love indian food and it was good the first time but I won’t sit there for half an hour without service.
