I am giving this place a 4, because the food, ambience and friendliness of much of the staff; however, I did not enjoy the service we received – that said, this place does not deserve 3 stars.
For appetizers, we ordered the shrimp and chourizo, fried Brussels and the Chicken Liver mousse. The Shrimp and Brussels were good, but the Mousse completely stole the show – absolutely outstanding. For dinner, I had the skirt steak and my girlfriend ordered the scallops – both excellent.
My issue with the service was essentially our server seemed completely disinterested in us. Never told us the specials (but did to the table next to us), never asked us for another round of drinks (we had to flag her when entrees came), didn’t give us the chance for dessert and seemed upset when we ordered more drinks and coffee. Our bill for 2 of us was $190 before tip – I don’t think I am being unreasonable in asking for something resembling elevated service.

Went on a first date here and it was excellent. From the food to the drinks and modern decor everything was wonderful. The servers were also very kind and attentive. My date and I dined on the buttermilk fried chicken and the salmon burger which were both delicious. I’d also like to give them props for being one of very few upscale restaurants open on a Monday in the Montclair/Bloomfield area. I will definitely be coming back.

Nice hip place, good food options, solid cocktail/wine choices. Intimate place good for a quiet night in a quiet town. The lighting is perfect, but the reason for the three stars is, it is a tad too dark in the front and back area and too bright at the bar.

Great spot to grab a drink with friends or have a nice dinner in a really cool atmosphere. Met here for drinks and ordered a few small plates. The pinot noir was excellent as were all the dishes we tried. They have a changing seasonal menu, which keeps things here fresh. Can’t wait to be back to try more things from their menu!

My husband and have visited Upstairs in the past for Valentine’s Day. We visited this past Saturday and had the worst experience at any restaurant ever. We were told it would be an hour and a half wait for a table. We decided to wait and sat at the bar for over a half hour without a drink. The bartenders were taking shots instead of serving drinks. We waited patiently and our table was given away so we never actually sat down for dinner. When I tried to speak to the owner about the issues above he was dismissive and walked away from us. Needless to say we will not be visiting Upstairs again.

Delicious food, great service and festive atmosphere. We love to sit at the tables across from the open kitchen. The back dining room is great for special occations. cocktails are worth the trip to Montclair!

A beautiful, modern bar with impressive, unique and seasonal food. The staff is just as wonderful. The image may be a bit modern for some. If it’s on the menu, don’t pass on the scallops or pork chop.
