YOU WILL WAIT and it’s going to be WORTH IT. Coming from Chicago and having a lot of good food options this place is fiiiiiire. That BBQ sauce is amazing! Pulled pork Mac and cheese was delicious. Corn bread was good. Great welcoming staff. Oh and the well stocked bathroom for anyone that just may need some toiletries is such a nice caring touch. May this amazing establishment continue to serve their community and us visitors for many years to come! We will definitely be back next visit out this way.

One of the standout features was their self-serve stations, including a make-your-own omelet and waffle station. I gave the waffle maker a try, though I’ll admit it could benefit from a quick cheat sheet for operation—I managed to mangle mine, but it still tasted delightful, especially paired with some fresh hot chicken.
The variety on offer ensured that everyone in our group was satisfied. My pescatarian companion had no trouble finding plenty of options, including shrimp and grits, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Pricing was reasonable given the quality and quantity of the offerings, and there were even drink specials to round out the experience.

My girlfriend and I wanted to try something new today, so we hopped on Google Maps and found Up In Smoke, right down the street. It’s tucked into a residential area near where Franklin Ave and E. Michigan Blvd meet, easy to miss, but absolutely worth finding.
From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by Jasalyn, who was our host, and server, and she was fantastic. She walked us through the specials, and while I originally planned on ribs, I ended up ordering one of the specials: a 4-piece jerk chicken mix with two sides. My girlfriend went with the pulled pork sliders, also with two sides.
The food didn’t come out lightning fast, but once it arrived, we understood why. Absolute heaven. You can tell this place takes real pride in what they do. When Jasalyn heard I had been considering ribs, her aunt in the kitchen surprised us with turkey tips to try and wow. They tasted just like ribs. Since it was our first visit, they also let us sample pork tips and chicken tips, and both were incredible.
What really stood out was how they made us feel like family, not just customers. Amazing food, genuine hospitality, and a welcoming atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back to try more dishes.

6 stars!!!! Incredible food! The jerk chicken was just like I ate when I lived in South Caicos Island. Ribs Incredible!! Got to speak with a Vietnam Vet that works there. Great guy. Awesome service. Even the couple next table over was talking about how good it was. I had the buffet, everything on it was great! Its a hole in the wall, in a residential neighborhood which as I’ve learned traveling all over the lower 48, makes the absolute best places to eat. If you’re in Michigan City, please stop here. Great service, and you support a true American Marine Corp Vet!

My husband and I have finally found a true BBQ close to Northwest Indiana called Up N Smoke in Michigan City, Indiana. Smoked in oak and cherry wood today, mostly he uses oak and Applewood, the BBQ is perfect, has got great chew and texture, excellent crispy bark, and his homemade BBQ sauce is outstanding. Damien has learned the trade from his uncle while he was growing up in Mississippi where he began as a baker. Today he is a Pit Master with pork, beef and chicken. His sides are large portions to be shared by 2-3 people easily. He also turned out to be quite a delightful person to meet and the rest of his staff were just the friendliest. Finally, our search is over to have true ( not boiled first then smoked) BBQ that is smoked from start to finish! All you locals COME ON BY AND TRY HIS BBQ. He also caters!

Won’t be back. Got too much going on! Then know to take care of your customers in front of you instead of answering in the middle of a customer ordering that’s in front of you. Simple stuff taking a whole hour! Oh then the nerve to be doing a food photo shoot I just hope that food is not going to customers when they done! I can’t stand an unstructured restaurant!
