We are in town visiting San Diego for the first time. We had a just “ok” experience at union kitchen. The service was very slow, granted it was Valentine’s Day weekend, but the delay on our drinks and wait staff was very delayed. The food was decent. It wasn’t very warm. They had a nice range of options for if you wanted to eat a healthier option or a more indulgent meal. A good place to watch games at. It wouldn’t be a restaurant I would feel eager to return to. Not awful but far from great.

We visited Union Kitchen & Tap Gaslamp for dinner and overall the experience was disappointing. The service was extremely slow, and for the prices, the food felt overpriced.

What we tried:
Skillet Cornbread – decent, nothing special
BBQ Chicken Flatbread – salty, lacked flavor
Truffle Fries – Decent
Chocolate Crème Brûlée – too sweet
Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita – decent

On top of that, there was an additional surcharge, which made the experience even more frustrating considering the slow service.
Overall, average food and not a place I’d rush back to.

Union Kitchen & Tap has a lot going for it—strong flavors, good service, and an atmosphere that’s absolutely a vibe.

The gumbo was the headline for me: rich, comforting, and clearly made with intention. Overall, the food landed well, and even the cornbread was close to being a win… but that’s also where the experience took a hit. The corn baked into the cornbread was unusually hard—so hard it felt like older corn was used instead of fresh. It distracted from what should’ve been a simple, satisfying side and honestly pulled focus from an otherwise excellent meal.

That said, the staff was friendly and on point, and the space feels like the kind of place you actually want to hang out in—not just eat and leave.

Big potential here. If the kitchen tightens up consistency on details like that cornbread, this becomes an easy repeat spot.

Today was an experience. I gave it 2 starts solely on the manager Dalton. We sat down at 450. And took me having to get up and asking the host for help in drinks. The hostess brought us water. Really nice. Finally we got a server. Never gave us his name. We got our drinks and said we wanted our appetizer with the meal. That came out first without our food. Then our waiter came over to drop off plates but we were done. Then we got our food. My friend steak fritas was good. My pan sear chicken was dry and felt like they microwave it. After that we never saw our waiter again. We got the manager Dalton over. Very kind and very respectful. He took care of it and offer a round of drinks or something. We were good but we appreciate him and his time to take care of what happened. Then after getting back to my room. I got food poisoning from the pan sear chicken. My assumption was right. We been here before and been great. But today was bad. Don’t order a pan sear chicken. And if you have any issues look for Dalton. Maybe one day we might try it again.

Visited this place for their Pokemon speakeasy. While the interior was nice and we got free Pokemon cards, the drinks were half-decent at best and we had to wait quite a while for the speakeasy. I definitely think it was a bit overhyped, and I hope the cocktails are of a higher quality next time around.

I come to San Diego once a year every year. Normally, I prefer to try different places each time I come. Union Kitchen and Tap will be a stop on every future trip here. The food was delicious and well presented. Flavors were well balanced and complimented each other nicely. The staff was friendly and helpful – ready with recommendations when asked but not pushy otherwise. 10/10 experience.

I got the shrimp and grits which I think is the most expensive dish they serve… also by far the worst plate of shrimp and grits I have ever been served.

Full disclosure, I am from the South East and have had some GREAT shrimp and grits, these were not even mediocre.

First of all, I have never been presented shrimp and grits in a pool of soup… Yeah I don’t want dry grits, but I don’t want a loose porridge either.

Next, the actual grits were super inconsistently cooked, the texture was way off the normal lumpy creaminess. It was little crunchy bits in a mushy liquid.

And the final components, the shrimp and sausage, both overcooked, the shrimp tasted slightly off but I didn’t get so at least there is that.

I’ll probably end up back for a $20 sandwich but I hope I am not tempted to try the $30 shrimp and grits again…

We’re having dinner with my partner to Celebrate her birthday and we just picked up of what we like to eat. And also ask the servant who was assigned to us and the food that he suggested for us to order was very yummy. Can’t wait to go back their again. And I would like to recommend this place to anybody.

Fast and friendly service. Only a five minute wait (esp during Comic-Con!). Booths were comfortable
This place was on the pricier side for food (included a pic of menu). I ordered the short rib loaded fries and was surprised how much I got!
I don’t drink but they had Pokemon themed cocktails during Comic Con which I thought was pretty cool

Enjoyed dinner and some drinks here late night. The food was excellent, and the service was fantastic, both quick and friendly. The atmosphere was great, warm and fun, not so loud you couldn’t hold a conversation without yelling. Overall, a great place to sit and enjoy a meal, or some drinks.
