but the pepperoni was on one side and the mushrooms on the other side. Unfortunately that made it completely useless to us.
We’ve been getting uncle Pete’s for as long as I can remember, and I have fond memories of Dad walking in with the huge brown boxes with images of Italy on the top, a pastiche of Italy, if you will, in the same way that the pizza is a Chicago pastiche of a real Italian pizza. We got the same thing every time, an extra large western and an extra large pepperoni with onions. And I remember how excited I would get that we would have pizza and leftovers for days to come.
Most recently, we ordered the same thing, me and my brother were both back in Naperville for Christmas, and after weeks of discussion we had decided that at some point on our visit we HAD to order uncle Pete’s. Except as the adult sons me and my brother had accepted the Herculean task of picking up the pizzas. The pizzas were not ready when we arrived, so me and my brother mired at the many photos of movie stars of times past pasted up on the wall, commenting on the similarities and differences they shared with us today. The movie stars is a funny touch, as they are arranged as a restaurant would put up autographed photos, but none of them are signed, and all of them are too high level of stars to have ever visited Naperville. During our wait the manager Jenny settled a debate on who Clint Eastwood was, starting a trend for her help-fullness to come.
I hate to say it, but we waited a very long time. There was some issue with the toppings, and we waited in uncle Pete’s for around 40 minutes, or 30 minutes after our original pickup time. When we finally got the pizzas I couldn’t help but have a slice in the car and it instantly launched me back to a simpler time, one where Dad might let you have a slice of his western pizza, but really we knew the pepperoni was the kids one.
To our dismay, when we opened the pizza at home we found them to be over cooked, and the toppings spread unevenly. In an uncharacteristic fashion Uncle Pete had rushed our order. We looked at eachother as a family in grimaced glances. Weeks of anticipation had culminated in this disappointing moment? We had to do what no one wants to do, we had to call, a daunting task always reserved for my mother.
Following the call with Jenny uncle Pete’s made one of the most impressive “make goods” I have ever seen. Jenny personally delivered 2 replacement pizzas that were, as I’ve reviewed, absolutely deserving of a 5 star. I’m impressed by uncle Pete’s customer service and I will always order from them when I am hankering for a thin crust pizza.
