Came for the 5th time for mine and my girlfriends 2 year anniversary and they even made the table all nice and wrote a cute note. The best restaurant around, atmosphere – 10, staff – 10, food – 10, drinks – 10, everything about umi is amazing. I have not once had a bad experience at umi and I never will the cocktails are unbelievable, the food is incredible and the staff are so kind and lovely. Highly recommend!!

Umi was a recommended place to eat for me and whilst I’m town thought I’d give it a try.
Wasn’t disappointed and glad I had the recommendation.
Treated warmly on entrance and seated immediately.
Really great menu and a taste sensation for my choices.
Great service and excellent front on house staff.
Umi is well decorated and there is a good atmosphere around the place.
Superb experience all in all and definitely will call again when next in town.

Absolutely spot on!!
Just went on my dinner break, chap on front desk was lovely and friendly couldn’t of been more helpful or pleasant to speak to asked if I had dietary requirements blah blah , sat immediately at table for 1, menus came promptly, drink arrived straight away.
Beer actually tasted like beer instead of flat dish water, ordered my food
pork belly ramen came back just after if been the toilet to wash up,
Red hot and obviously cooked to order.
Tasted fantastic, best ramen I’ve had in england in a restaurant/takeaway
Chap on front desk/service was dead friendly and helpful with any questions
Atmosphere was lovely good music, not loud.
Interior was good too,
Enjoyed going there.
Just a shame I was on my dinner break and didn’t have longer to order a bigger meal, was honestly fantastic!
Definitely go back again and will recommend to others.

Wow. I love this place. Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough. This Food is right up my street. I don’t drink but love good food. Mind you they do stock some fine whiskies from Japan. Staff are fantastic. The owners James and Avery are such nice people.
Other restaurant owners should dine here and learn from these. This is the place to go if you like nice fresh cooked food Chinese Japanese style. I look forward to coming back to my home town to eat here.

Been in this evening, relaxed atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Happy to answer any questions regards the cuisine for those not so familiar. Went for steak skewers starter and the duck breast ramen. Amazing flavours and I’ll admit I nearly rolled out I was that full. Highly recommend and will certainly be going back. Great food.

First time visiting this restaurant and certainly won’t be the last.
Very pleasant atmosphere, very clean and nicely decorated.
The staff gave exemplary service, from the moment we stepped inside through to us leaving, they even took the time to try to teach us how to use the chopsticks and brought cutlery after witnessing my feeble attempt.
The food was delicious I had the pork belly bao bun followed by the beef brisket ramen, my daughter had the duck bao bun and katsu chicken curry and we shared a sushi platter, we couldn’t eat all the sushi and the sever boxed it up for us to take home.
I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be returning.

Was served by August who was warm and friendly and excellent at communication. Had great food, enjoyed a pleasantly quiet atmosphere, would absolutely go back for the squid karage / potato rolls alone they were absolutely delicious. Also commend Umi’s for their non-alcoholic drink menu, mocktails can be ludicrously upcharged so it was nice to have a fun drink that still tasted good and didn’t break the bank. I think my only feedback which was very personal to my taste was that the Pacific Futamaki was a little more flavourless than I was expecting. The spicy mayo in the restaurant is really good, I think the food could have used more of it, but I also appreciate that you don’t want to overwhelm it.

The best Japanese restaurant in the area by far!! We have been several times, and never once has it disappointed.
The staff are so friendly and welcoming, fantastic cocktails and the food is unbelievable!
It is fairly expensive but it’s worth it for the quality of the food and presentation of the drinks. Highly recommend this place.

It’s definitely the best independent Japanese restaurant in Middlesbrough, a hidden gem. It’s reasonably priced and there’s always good portion sizes. They have a wide range of cocktails on the menu, and Asahi beer is usually on draught, although this is on the expensive side for Middlesbrough.
There is a set menu for dinner and à la carte for tea.
We’ve never had any issues here, we usually just have starters and mains, although the desserts also look delicious.
