Reviews
The place itself is spacious and has a zen decor, music is not loud. They don’t have alcohol license so only mocktails available. Overall it was a nice experience and certainly a nice addition for the Griffintown area.
Apr ’24: Food and quality are still great. There’s now an outdoor terrace also. The only bemol is the service which is kinda slow and the waiters don’t come by very often.
June ’24: We’re trying the terrace for the time and the seating was very comfortable. It has the Ibiza vibes with the sun and a nice background music. The service can’t be better as they gave us free sashimi for bringing out the wrong item.
Aug ’24: We had a wonderful dinner with friends who tried this place for the first time. The newly introduced BYOW makes this place even more attractive! The sushi/sashimi are amazing as usual. It took a bit of time to get the food but we quickly forgot about it once the food arrived and the alcohol kicked in.
Dec ’24: We came back with some friends. Sushi quality is still good but price has increased a lot compared to beginning of the year. Platter Abundance is now $169 instead of $129!! The restaurant was full. We ordered extra sashimi on top of the platter, asking to have it come out first and they were not able to do it. The sashimi actually came after , and the restaurant felt a bit cold as if it wasn’t heated enough. We hope the restaurant will keep up with its reputation.
Sept ’25: We’ve been few times since but this time we noticed a difference so thought of writing a comment. We usually order combos and this time the sashimi, nigiri, maki pieces… everything are smaller in size. I’m even shocked to see how tiny it is the uramaki. Seems like it’s different chef doing and it’s not as good. Quite disappointed!
One of the unique features of this place is that it’s a bring-your-own-wine spot, which is quite rare in Griffintown, making it a great option for a relaxed evening out. The mocktails were impressive as well, providing a refreshing complement to the meal.
The sushi was nothing short of amazing, featuring creative and complementary flavors that showcased the chef’s talent. The ingredients were super fresh, and the large portions meant we left feeling completely satisfied.
To top it all off, we indulged in exquisite desserts, with the limoncello basil being a standout that I can’t recommend highly enough.
Furthermore, the décor of the restaurant is gorgeous and creates a warm, intimate atmosphere that’s perfect for a date night.
Service is impeccable and you are treated so well (like kings and queens).
Umamia serves premium sushis rolls and nigiris with incredible ingredients. The kitchen is in the dinning room so you see all the chefs in action and this is pretty to see.
All the sushis were delicious (I recommend them all).
I also tasted all the appetizers and they were all excellent.
If I had to choose my top 3 : wasabi nori chips, lobster infused miso soup and gyozas.
The service was impeccable! Pierre-Marc made excellent recommendations and ensured that every need was met without being overbearing.
Now, the food…divine. Every dish was a celebration of flavor and creativity. You can tell the chefs put passion and precision into everything they prepare. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, and the presentation was beautiful — almost too pretty to eat (but we did, and we were blown away). Each bite was perfectly balanced, bold, and satisfying.
Whether you’re a foodie or just looking for a special night out, Umamia is the kind of place that will leave a lasting impression. It’s clear this isn’t just a restaurant — it’s an experience. I’ll definitely be coming back — and bringing everyone I know with me!
I never leave reviews, but I felt compelled to write this one — especially when comments are being deleted.
I had high expectations after seeing influencer videos and positive reviews, but reality was the complete opposite. Extremely slow service but food good.
Thankfully, the sushi partially saved the experience, but overall we were very disappointed.
After speaking with nearby tables, we learned that the quality and service have dropped significantly in recent months, apparently due to a new staff — and it clearly shows.
The servers showed no involvement and even seemed to be in conflict, which made the situation uncomfortable. Even the sushi chefs looked uneasy witnessing the chaos.
If you can’t manage service properly, don’t overbook and make customers wait endlessly. Reviews appear to be filtered and possibly misleading.
