I came in hopeful, hungry, and ready to be impressed. Instead, I left feeling like I’d just taken the SAT of sushi—long, confusing, and full of questions I didn’t sign up for.

We ordered three rolls and the special parmesan noodles. The noodles were… fine. It’s basically Japanese udon and Italian pasta having an identity crisis. Not my taste, but if you’re a parmesan‑noodle person, this might be your love language. Mine? Not so much.

The Mexicana roll was the best of the three, which is kind of like saying it was the best student in summer school. Edible, but not something I’d reorder. The White Truffle Tail was rough. I spent half the meal trying to figure out which roll it even was because I couldn’t taste a single truffle. If there was truffle in there, it must’ve been on PTO.

The last roll… listen. It was so forgettable I genuinely cannot recall its name. My brain deleted it like an unwanted email.

At this point, maybe I should come back just for drinks, but based on the food alone, I’m 0 for 4. And I’m not exactly eager to go for best‑of‑five.

I walked in at 5 and got a table immediately but the restaurant filled up quickly. I got the mexicana roll and a half roll of surf and turf. Both were melt in mouth amazing. The lychee martini was also very tasty. The staff was very nice. Looking forward to my next visit.

I had don katsu. It was okay. Waitress was nice but the other staff treated us a bit weirdly. My friends had the sushi rolls, which they liked so I might have been unlucky with the food. But regarding the service, the staff didn’t really treat us properly while we were waiting for our table to be ready.

Umai is a hidden gem in Chicago! The atmosphere is sleek yet relaxed — perfect for a dinner date, night out with friends, or solo sushi fix. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing.

I tried a variety of sashimi, and every single one was fresh, beautifully plated, and full of flavor. The fish was high quality and melted in my mouth.

Prices are reasonable for the quality you get, and they have a great drink selection too. Umai definitely earns a spot on my go-to list for sushi in Chicago.

My husband and I went here for the first time Friday night, our first time in Chicago. It was so good that despite all the restaurants in the are, we went back Saturday. Food was delicious, service was great.

Great sushi, staff was very attentive and kind. Got there at 5 and was seated immediately. By the time we left every other table was filled.

The food was good. Ordered the sushi omakase but the server could have explained which each piece was.

The place is nice and the sushi is good!
Only the ramen recipe is too much spicy, be aware of it. The lemon martini was quite bad to be honest. Maybe I just didn’t chose the best options, but the service was 10/10

Visiting Chicago we stopped in one night and had a fantastic meal. Service was excellent and the atmosphere was warm, a touch of trendy with a “just right” amount of Japanese design.

We decided to go again two night later to try the ramen. Again, excellent high quality food.

I appreciate the timely and friendly service as well as attention to detail. We’ll certainly be back.
