We thoroughly enjoyed the 16 courses, each felt flavorful and great cuts of fish. The place is lively, more casual, and friendly staff. I would highly recommend this and will be back before a night out with friends – it’s the perfect ambiance. Plus the house sake was delicious. Really loved it thank you!!!!!
That said, don’t expect a super luxurious omakase experience at this price point (which is completely reasonable). We did feel a little rushed toward the end of the course, and as you can see they were stacking the sushi pieces. I think that is totally fine though if you didn’t have expectations for a luxurious omakase experience (outside of the food).
Given the sushi quality with this pricing, it is definitely worth a try!!!
We also enjoyed refreshing cocktails and really delicious sake, which paired perfectly with the courses. The overall experience felt elevated, creative, and well thought out from start to finish. I would absolutely recommend Uka Omakase for a special night out, a date, or anyone looking for a refined sushi experience in NYC.
Overall, we weren’t that blown away by the experience. We liked the variety of flavors and topping choices for some of the pieces. The fish also seemed decent quality. Our reservations lie in inconsistencies in the final sushi pieces that were served, and also the sizes of the pieces. I’ve been to a handful of budget omakase places now and this place had by far the smallest pieces. The size of the fish also had a lot of variety, even between the sizes served to our party. We had a lady next to us with a bright light who was filming and photographing all the pieces and we definitely felt that her pieces seemed a bit larger at times.
In summary, Uka omakase wasn’t bad but I think I would recommend other omakase places first.
We ordered the $56 classic omakase, which has been upgraded to include wagyu, and it came with 16 courses: yellowtail sashimi, soup, 12 pieces of sushi (including madai, gindara, zuke akami, chu toro, double otoro, kampachi, shima aji, seabass, hotate, salmon with foie gras, unagi, and wagyu with truffle salt), a toro handroll, and ice cream for dessert. Everything tasted fresh and beautifully prepared.
What I really appreciated is that the sushi had a perfect balance, not too much rice, so you can really enjoy the quality of the fish. The portions were generous, and for the price, the value is amazing.
Service was good. A tiny quibble which is that they could be a little more consistent in describing each dish.
Overall a neighborhood gem and we would recommend this place.
Vibes are great, and they have purse hooks under the bar seats! We had to specifically ask for wasabi and soy sauce. They rushed us to leave at the end tho :/
– 16 course omakase ($56): 11/10, all the pieces were SO good and fresh. The wasabi was great quality. Fav courses were the hamachi, gindara, zuke akami (lean tuna), hotate (scallop), unagi, and matcha ice cream. I’ve never had a scallop nigiri that I’ve loved bc it’s usually chewy or too fishy/slimy, but the piece here was HEAVENLY – changed my mind about raw scallops!! The matcha ice cream at the end was insanely creamy and rich too, not too sweet!
– Free sake shot: 11/10, I haven’t tried much same, but it went down so smoothly and was one of the better ones I’ve had. They filled my shot glass to the brim, and it’s def at least two shots worth
– Gindara ($8): 11/10, was so good that my friend and I both ordered this as an extra at the end of omakase. This was our fav piece, and the texture and flavor reminds me of unagi
– Complimentary mint: Cute! They gave it to us when we left
*Note: If you make a reservation for 5 pm or 8:45 pm, you get a free bottle of sake for every 2 people
Looking forward to the special valentines day event next month!
