Uchiko, child of Uchi, is the offspring of James Beard Award‑winning Chef Tyson Cole’s original non‑traditional Japanese concept. While the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, Uchiko takes a fiery turn bringing smoke and char alongside the fresh and clean flavors that define Uchi.

To start, the ambiance and interior were disappointing. For a restaurant of this caliber and price point, the atmosphere felt average at best and lacked the refinement or warmth one would expect for a special New Year’s Eve dining experience.
We decided to try the Osaka experience, which we were told would be “really good” and consist of items available only that night. In addition, we ordered three sushi rolls off the menu. While the presentation, effort, and plating were visually appealing, the taste was subpar. The rolls were extremely small, overly spicy, dry, and lacked depth of flavor. Having had sushi all over the world, we were genuinely surprised by how underwhelming the flavors were for such a highly rated establishment.
Throughout the Osaka experience, the service delivery was lackluster. Servers would briefly stop by to explain each course, but they spoke very quietly and rushed through the descriptions, making it difficult to hear or appreciate what we were being served. The wait times between courses were excessive, which felt intentional—almost as if to make guests feel fuller over time despite the extremely small portions.
The final price for the Osaka experience (just food) turned out to be $445 for three people, and you can see the entrees below in the photos. For that price, the portion sizes were shockingly small—what was served for three people looked more appropriate for two people. While we understand that premium ingredients are expensive, the overall value simply did not match the cost.
Another major issue was that we were brought a palate cleanser containing champagne without being informed beforehand. As non-drinkers, this was uncomfortable and concerning. We had to question the staff ourselves to confirm the contents, and they ultimately had to remake the cleanser.
At the end of the Osaka experience, we were presented with what was described as a “gift”: a spoon, some salt, and a $50 gift card. We were not there for a cheap gift. This did not feel like a genuine gesture, but rather an attempt to make people return and spend more money. Additionally, during our meal, we noticed another couple who had ordered the omakase and were visibly unhappy with their experience as well.
To be fair, the staff was polite and kind, and it’s clear that Uchi puts effort into presentation and service. However, effort alone does not justify the price. The food quality, portion sizes, and overall value fell far short of expectations.
We were fully prepared to pay top dollar (we paid 600 dollars for three people with the Osaka experience and 3 extra rolls from the menu, we did not order any drinks, just food) for a memorable New Year’s Eve experience, but instead, we left feeling disappointed, unsatisfied, and frankly, robbed. The Osaka/Omakase experience was one of the worst values we’ve encountered, especially for a restaurant with Uchi’s reputation. Wishing you all the best, and we hope you take this review into consideration for future guests :).
Truffle Fries
Karaage: crispy and sweet with some pickles and radishes to balance everything out
Kabocha: Deep fried Japanese pumpkin. The panko breading was good and so was the pumpkin, but the brown butter creme fraiche was the star of this dish.
Japanese Sweet Potato: It was a nice change in what we usually get for dinner at restaurants. Deep rich sweet potato flavor.
Kinoko Nabe: Loved this dish, very homey and filling (I actually don’t think we would’ve gotten full if we didn’t order this). The rice was crispy and the mushrooms were seasoned well. They added an egg to mix in too which gave it a deeper richer flavor.
Hamachi: so fresh, I always love yellowtail
Sake Toro: SO good, my favorite piece of nigiri
Hama Chili: The orange pieces really make the dish. Love how the citrus pairs with the fish, so refreshing.
Soft Shell Crab Makimono: We were feeling basic and wanted this one, can’t go wrong with it
Iberico Pork Flank: The squash puree was such a good pair with the pork which was tender and fatty.
Milk and Cereal: So freaking food as usual
S’mores: Chocolatey bar with marshmallow ice cream that wasn’t overly sweet.
We loved the vibes of this place (super good for date night) and enjoyed it better than Uchi. There were more options for bigger plates so we felt like the money went further. The service was also great – our waiter made sure to check there were no peanuts or cashews in each of the dishes since my fiance has a nut allergy. The dishes came out on the slower side, but we didn’t mind too much since we were enjoying our time talking. Such a great NYE dinner <3. Would definitely come back.
As usual, the food was spectacular. Service was on point – JP took care of us and he was exceptionally knowledgeable and charming. We felt very well cared for. Our sushi chef, Xaviar, was friendly and skilled with the knife – I really enjoyed watching him dishing up hand rolls and he chatted with us as much as possible as the evening got busier and busier on a Saturday night.
We loved every dish we tried. We sampled some items from the happy hour menu, as well as the main menu, and we finished with a cheesecake that was mind blowing.
Since this was our 1st time to Uchiko we were advised to sit at the bar to have a good immersive experience and it was bang on ! Big shout out to Aamir our barkeep who was very engaging talking and explaining everything to us and also folks who joined later, we ended up trying their recommendations for Cocktails and also Aamirs Signature Drink.
Overall I highly recommend the place for special occasions or otherwise and if possible for your group sit at the bar !
Could not have asked for a better Anniversary Dinner.
Hama Chili kicked off our meal with beautiful yellowtail and bright flavor.
The Toro Nuta was unexpected, memorable, and gone in 60 seconds.
The Kombu Carrots were like nothing we’ve really had before. Delectable.
The night started with the warmest Valet we’ve had the pleasure to work with. What a treat.
I visited the Dallas area in Texas to spend time with my partner and we decided to go to a nice dinner to celebrate the occasion. Despite the long wait because of large number of people, the staff went above and beyond to make our dinner a fond memory we will never forget! I’d like to give a special thanks to Kara for making sure we felt heard and taken care of. The food was delicious and we would love to come again for our next anniversary.
The standout of the evening was the Wagyu served on a hot stone. We ordered two portions, and it was the only dish that truly delivered in terms of flavor and quality. It was well-executed and felt aligned with the premium pricing.
Unfortunately, the rest of the menu didn’t reach that same level. One example was the salmon belly, which arrived noticeably dry—something that should be avoidable for a cut that is typically prized for its richness. At $7, it may seem like a minor item on the menu, but even small plates reflect a restaurant’s commitment to quality control, and this one missed the mark.
Most of the other dishes fell into a middle ground: nicely presented and visually appealing, but lacking the depth of flavor that would make them memorable or worth returning for. Nothing was particularly bad, but aside from the Wagyu, nothing stood out as exceptional either.
Overall, the experience felt driven more by presentation than by flavor. At this price point, I would expect a kitchen to deliver consistency and a few more dishes that truly justify the cost.
