We ordered two plates: the Beef Kabab Plate ($15.99) and the Mix Shawarma Plate ($14.99). Both were well balanced. The yellow basmati rice was delicious and the salad was very refreshing. Flavors were good overall, but the meats were dry and overcooked. The white sauce helped add some moisture. The Beef Kabab Plate came with two skewers, while the Mix Shawarma Plate came with gyros and chicken shawarma. The salad included diced pickles which was interesting and added a nice contrasting acidity.
Dolma ($5.99): This came with four pieces of dolma, pita bread, white sauce, and hot sauce. The dolma was better than expected, though I personally prefer falafel.
Hummus ($5.99): Delicious and paired perfectly with the soft pita.
Baklava ($3): A generous sized pastry that was okay. We have had better baklava elsewhere.
Right off of S 1st Street in a nice little food truck park is Tx Shawarma. I ordered the gyro plate when I went, and what I got was SUPER delicious and filled with flavor. And there’s a really interesting thing about their gyro meat that I want to point out–each piece had a crispy edge! It’s not something I’ve ever had when eating gyro elsewhere, but honestly, it was such a nice touch. I would go back just for that alone.
However, the whole experience was so much more! The vegetables were fresh and also had a nice crisp. The white sauce, hot sauce, and pita bread were all amazing. And the gentleman who helped me was so nice too!
This place is in the upper tier of Mediterranean food trucks in the downtown Austin area. If you’re already downtown and in the market for this, go south of the river and stop by even if it means more driving. It’s worth it, I promise!
Is it the best gyro I have ever had? No. Not even close. Will it do if you have a taste for a gyro? Yes.
Let’s just say it won’t make your day worse.
If the balance of the gyro sandwich was better— I would give it a 4. It’s too salty even with tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and sauce. I ate half which is a good sign and I’ll probably eat the other half tomorrow. Even though I’m hungry- it’s too salty to finish.
We ordered:
The chicken shawarma plate
The beef kabob wrap
Side of falafel (it comes with pita bread, white sauce and hot sauce)
Side order of fries (white sauce, hot sauce and ketchup on the side, at the suggestion of the worker so my fries wouldn’t be soggy on the ride home!)
The food was hot and super delicious! The wait was no problem at all. I’d also like to mention that the menu is super visible, everything that comes on a dish is clearly stated and if a modification is necessary they will happily do it. In my case I didn’t want red onions on the chicken shawarma plate so they left them off.
We’ll definitely be coming back!
I ordered the Hummus, Baklava, and a number 9 mixed Shawarma wrap.
