True Chesapeake, located in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore, is a fine dining restaurant born of an oyster farm. Executive Chef Zack Mills creates a seasonal menu that showcases oysters from our farm in St. Jerome’s Creek, Southern Maryland. But, the oysters are just the beginning. Our award-winning menu celebrates the bounty of the Chesapeake region by using locally sourced seafood, meat, and produce to create exquisite dishes that evolve with the seasons. Chef Mills has been featured extensively for his use of invasive seafood species, a very delicious way to help the Chesapeake Bay. We have an expertly curated wine list, beer selection, and cocktails – both classic and creative.

1. Walked in and they didn’t have the reservation. Told us we had canceled our reservation… we had not ( at least not on purpose)… Still, felt the need to tell us twice in a condescending way, then made it seem like they were doing us a favor by finding us a table (at 5:30p… it wasn’t very busy). And reminded us we had to be out of there by 7:30 (given we had Hippodrome tickets, we had already said we’d be gone by then, but the host felt a need to belabor that).
2. Did the Restaurant week menu – unfortunately, it was not great. Not much of a price break, and certainly didn’t make us want to go back.
3. Liked the fried oysters, but the spaghetti squash bed it was on felt a bit out of sync with the fried oyster.
4. Snakehead fish was very bland. The steak was just ok. Squash curry soup was fine, as was the Caesar salad.
5. The desserts were terrible. A pumpkin cake that was super disappointing (we’ve had better box cakes), and a chocolate torte that was just mediocre. We didn’t finish any of the desserts but they didn’t ask once why or how we liked them.
6. Our waitperson did not ask once how our meal was overall even after my wife asked for salt and pepper.
7. The wine pairing was very good. Really the only part of the experience in line with the cost.
Overall, 3/5 is generous. Might go back for happy hour oysters and a drink. Certainly, the service needs some work and coaching.
We made a reservation and were sat quickly. Our server Luiz was attentive and friendly. We had a sampling of MD oysters, french onion baked oysters, oyster Caesar with crabcake, and the scallops. Everything was delicious and fresh.
For dessert we order the peanut butter marshmallow pot and the inside out apple pie.
Great date night spot, and perfect oyster season meal!
The service was top notch—attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. A special highlight was when the chef personally came to our table to share the rich history of the building. It added such a meaningful touch to an already perfect evening.
We ended on a high note with a dessert that blew us away. Can’t wait to return
Service was fast (if not curt), but the star of the show is the Happy Hour menu. 2 dollar oysters and 6 dollar old fashioneds! They feature the shucker prominently at the bar, making quick work of the shells in front of him.
They have a menu beyond HH that ranges from 15 – 80 dollars, with Oysters from around the area and things like Crab Mac and Cheese.
I got here when they opened at 5 but it doesn’t seem to get terribly crowded on a Tuesday evening. Nice spot, I’ll be back soon.
