Let’s start with the good — the bar staff, Kelsey and Chloe, were absolutely fantastic. Friendly, attentive, and they made a great Manhattan Beach Hooch. Honestly, the bar experience was the highlight of the night.
Unfortunately, dinner was another story. We ordered the Cacio e Pepe and the Chicken Alfredo.
The Cacio e Pepe was so dry that my boyfriend actually had to add water to his pasta just to make it edible. The noodles were undercooked and crunchy — definitely not how pasta should be served. He added shrimp (only got four) and was upcharged for them. He powered through it because he was starving, but it was rough.
My Alfredo wasn’t any better. The pasta came out clumped together in a dry, gooey mess with almost no sauce at all. The chicken was so dry it was like chewing cotton balls. When I asked for more Alfredo sauce just to be able to eat it, I was charged extra — which made no sense, considering the original dish barely had any sauce to begin with.
To be fair, they did remake my dish, and the second version was much better — creamy sauce, hot chicken, and actually enjoyable. But when the bill came, the upcharge for the extra sauce was still there. That left a bad taste, literally and figuratively.
For the price tag, the food just isn’t worth it. The flavors were mediocre, and the quality inconsistent. We’ve been before (earlier in the evening around 6:30) and had a better experience, but this time we came at 7:30 — and that shouldn’t make a difference in food quality.
All in all, the service at the bar was great, but the kitchen execution and management oversight really missed the mark. Sadly, we won’t be back. I’d rather go to Fresco’s or even Olive Garden before spending that kind of money again here.
Atmosphere and service was good.
It was Valentines day and being new to the area, this was going to be a special occasion for us.
We were greatly disappointed in the VERY spicy tomato pasta sauce. I much prefer a traditional sweet sauce. If we were looking for spicy foods, we would have gone to a Mexican restaurant. It wasnt the valentine experience we were expecting when we drove 1 hr to eat there. I think chefs should make 2 separate choices of sauce, one spicey, one sweet without chili peppers.
To start I had a caesar salad and my husband had the arancini. My salad was just a bowl of lettuce with the hardest croutons I’ve ever had. I asked the server for more dressing and received it for no charge. The dressing was good but it’s so thick that it’s impossible to mix it into the salad. The arancini was delicious and had plenty of sauce.
Next I had the chicken alfredo and my husband got the chicken picatta. My pasta was god awful: thick, gummy, and dry. My husband noticed me not enjoying it and asked the server for more sauce. We got charged $3 for the sauce, it was delivered to the wrong table and when they handed it over it seriously was just a cup of milk. The sauce was thin and flavorless. The lemon picatta was more wet than the alfredo but I don’t know if I would call it sauce, it was more like lemon juice and pasta water. The best part about either pasta dish was the protein and I find that really sad for an Italian restaurant.
Finally we got to have dessert, the only truly redeeming part of the entire experience. Since it was my birthday they gave us free waffle cone cannolis and I ordered their seasonal cheesecake which was cookie butter. The cannolis were fine; the cheesecake was phenomenal.
I also had two of their Christmas cocktails during the meal. I had a Melted Frosty which didn’t seem finished. I don’t know how to describe it but it was like there was more carbonated water than there were flavors. It got better about halfway through but the first half was like getting a Sprite from a fountain that’s running out of syrup. The second drink I got was You’re a Wizard, Harry and it was entirely too strong, to the point of being gross. So one cocktail had seemingly no alcohol and the other had too much. I also never got carded for the drinks.
The service was weird. Our server was great but the hostess who sat us came back and moved us about 5 minutes later. Then there was a man running food who kept trying to give us other people’s appetizers and ultimately gave our $3 cup of warm milk to another table.
I really wanted to like this place. I love pasta but my favorite part of pasta is sauce and this place just refuses to give you any, probably because they know it isn’t good. The first bite of my alfredo tasted like jarred sauce and that is a huge red flag. We saw a lot of other people eating pizza and maybe that’s the correct way to utilize this restaurant, but I’m not driving all the way back to Perry and spending another $125 to find out.
Even the bread service was more than “just bread”. Thanks so much for a fantastic night.
Would come back for thirds!
Service: 10/10
Mikenzie was our server and she was great! She was very attentive and took extra steps that made our meal so enjoyable!
We came a little earlier than our reservation and were sat immediately. Food came out quick, but not rushed.
Drinks: 10/10
Michelob Ultra on Draft: no complaints! (Just a mich ultra so not much to say here)
Bubbles and Bramble cocktail: sooo delicious! Probably one of the best cocktails I’ve had. Not too sweet, but was kind of like a fruity mojito. Highly recommend!
Appetizer: Mozzarella Cheese Sticks 7/10
Very delicious and definitely recommend, especially if you have a large group. Maybe not ideal for a party of two because it comes with 3 huge sticks. Could have had slightly more seasoning, but overall very enjoyable. The marinara that came on the side was great and we think it was probably homemade.
Pizza: Pizza Di Carne 10/10
Absolute show stopper. This was probably the best thing we had overall. The pancetta was *chef’s kiss*. Get it, you wont regret it. It’s 8 slices and definitely large enough to share.
Pasta: Arabiatta 7/10
Full disclosure, I have never had this dish before so I have nothing to compare it to. I liked this, but I probably wouldn’t get it again. It was not bad by any means, but i think I would have liked a different pasta better. The only actual technical issue with it was that the pasta was slightly undercooked. The chicken that I added to the dish was great. They also offer freshly grated parmesan which was a nice touch.
Dessert: Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake with Raspberry sauce (8/10)
Very good cheesecake, great texture. My boyfriend felt like there was too much raspberry sauce, but I loved it. If that’s something you are iffy on, I would recommend asking for it on the side.
Overall Score: 9/10
We got a lot more food than we needed, but honestly we were just excited to try a new place (and we’ve been on a diet for a while haha so went a little crazy). I definitely think everything was a shareable size unless you eat a ton. When we come back, we want to try a different pasta, but will have a hard time branching out to a new pizza after the perfection that the Pizza Di Carne was. I think for the average couple, just two entrees or one entree (split) and one appetizer would be enough! We will definitely be back!
