Toyo Ramen in Ankeny is an absolute gem, hands down the best ramen I’ve had in Iowa, and honestly some of the best I’ve had anywhere.

We started with the Ebi Fry, perfectly crispy deep-fried shrimp with a light, crunchy coating and a great tartar sauce that didn’t overpower the shrimp at all. Fresh, hot, and addictive (we took the picture halfway through it)

For ramen, we had both the Hakata Tonkotsu and the Classic Chicken Ramen, and WOW.

The tonkotsu broth was rich, silky, and deeply flavorful without being heavy or greasy; exactly how a slow-simmered pork bone broth should be. The chashu was tender, the ajitama egg was cooked perfectly, and the black garlic oil added a beautiful depth. Every topping felt intentional and high quality.

The chicken ramen was just as impressive, clean, comforting, and packed with flavor. The broth was incredibly smooth, the chicken was juicy, and the fresh vegetables and seafood oil brought everything together in a really balanced way. Nothing was overpowering, just pure, well-crafted ramen.

What really stood out is how fresh and authentic everything tasted. I’ve had a lot of ramen in different states (including New York City where I used to live) and Toyo Ramen easily holds its own. This is the kind of place you’d expect to find in a major food city.

The decor is lovely too, warm, modern, and thoughtfully designed. You genuinely feel transported the moment you walk in. Des Moines Metro absolutely needed and deserved a place like this. Toyo Ramen is a must-visit and will definitely be a regular stop for us.

I went with my wife and daughter for the first time here and was impressed. We each got a different kind of ramen and an order of edamame. The ramen was probably in the top three of the ramen we’ve had before for sure. It was definitely delicious and the staff were helpfully and courteous. The restaurant was a little small but with the setup and decor it worked. Photos left to right

We love this place. I’m a picky eater. Their chicken fried rice is so full of flavor. Food is fresh every time. My spouse loves Japanese food. He loves their ramen. We have been twice in a week. He drinks every last sip of broth and food in the bowel.

Fun design, built like a lot of other small ramen shops in the states. The Agedashi Tofu is probably my favorite to-date. The chicken karaage was also very nicely breaded and juicy, albeit a very modest amount of both appetizers. The entrées were an appropriate portion, though neither the Hakata Tonkatsu Ramen or the Pork Chasu Fried Rice had much flavor. I don’t like an overly-salty dish but both mains lacked any character–much unlike the starters. I added the available togarashi but that didn’t do much. I will probably order something else next time.

Some friends and myself went out to try this restaurant and I can honestly say I can’t wait to return! The food was just amazing, the service was very quick, and the atmosphere was just lovely. The staff were also very nice to us as well! This is definitely a new hidden gem restaurant I have found and I would seriously recommend trying it out if you haven’t yet!

Randomly found this place while traveling and so glad I did! Cozy Japanese-style vibe, great for photos. The ramen was delicious — rich broth, tender pork, and a perfectly cooked soft-boiled egg. Staff were super friendly too. Would definitely come back!

Stopped in after seeing they are now open, I believe they just opened within the week. The Tonkotsu ramen was quite good. The both could have a bit more flavor but overall it was good and better than most you will find in Iowa. I was a bit disappointed to notice the Gyoza was prepackaged and not house made.

I was also a bit surprised I was charged $1.95 for tap water (edit: owner says this was a mistake and not the norm). Ordering and service was a bit confusing. Seems like a restaurant you would have a waiter but you order at the front and pay ahead. No issues, but would have been helpful to be told that when walking in as it’s a new place. I also did not know if you were to leave your tray and dishes at the table so I put them in the cart they had with other dirty dishes. Again, not an issue but some guidance would have helped.

I think with some small improvements this could be a great place. I will come back and overall I recommend it.

Really good food! Would get the beef ramen again over the pork. It just opened so service was a little slow, but I’m sure they will get it figured out soon! Would definitely go back again.

DELICIOUS! Best customer service ever. Both cashiers were amazing but specifically the young person with short hair. They were SO sweet and helpful. Everyone had a genuine and welcoming smile on their faces and helped us navigate the menu and answered all of our questions! I got the tofu ramen and my hubby got the pork. HUGE portions and we got to-go containers! The cutest little ramen shop ever. Good job owner! Keep it up and give your cashiers/cooks a raise! They deserve it! We will be back and recommending to all our friends!
