We recently took our boat out to the Toucan Grill & Fresh Bar in Oriental, and I’m happy to report — solid food and drinks, with a fun, water front atmosphere.

We tried the Pain Killer and Bloody Mary. Both were fantastic. For a waterfront town dive bar style place, they nailed the cocktails.

We ordered the crab dip for an appetizer. It was fantastic. Creamy, flavor-packed, with crisp, fried pita to scoop— definitely a good choice.

For food we had the burger, founder sandwich, and ahi tuna appetizer with a salad.
The burger- it was good. I think it was frozen, but it was a good size and the toppings were fresh. I wouldn’t say it blew us out of the water, but it is a reliable choice.

The flounder sandwich? Best of the lot. Fresh local fish, nicely done, perfectly fried, great sandwich overall. Would highly recommend.

The ahi tuna with a salad? Fresh and delicious — tuna cooked just right, salad crisp, dressing (especially the homemade ranch). Would highly recommend.
For service & atmosphere: The place has a relaxed waterfront with friendly service. Don’t be in a hurry. Everything comes out in a slow pace. But the food and drinks were great. If you’re looking for fine dining it’s not that — but if you want good food by the water in a friendly setting, this hits.

I can honestly say this is authentic ENC all the way!! From the wait staff, bartender and the food!! All that perfect ENC that we all love! If you’re not from around here this is a must stop in for a visit! We are from NB and haven’t been down this way in some time but that’s about to change thanks to this place and the abundance of other places to go eat and visit! Great place to spend a week, weekend or just afternoon/day. If you’re down from NY or up from ATL it definitely would be a great place to lay your head close to the beach as well as New Bern and other great cities. You’re hours away from beautiful mountains and two of the most beautiful cities in the south Raleigh and Charlotte which are both a must visit for your first time in NC. But back to the menu The food here was amazing I had the fresh shrimp basket with sweet potato fries that were amazing. My wife had the flounder basket that she ate every bit of with not one complaint which that in itself is worth five stars… We had beer and tea for drinks and for two people we only spent 60 dollars if that which is really cheap for a restaurant on the water. If you come here you’re going to be happy and more than likely return. Thank you

We were greeted with a staff member opening the door to step inside to a hostess who was on the phone and a server patiently waiting behind her.. after her brief conversation, she sat us at a small two seater squshed next to the wall walking by a 4 top. We asked the server who was very polite if we could sit there. After looking at the menu which is very different from what is shown online, I decided to order the chicken and rice soup, my husbamd ordered the stuff flounder special. We were served ready made rolls which seemed to be microwaved from the rubbery texture. At the time I pulled up google and started looking at reviews…. the meal. Chicken and rice soup from the lack of chicken, rice and flavoring, Id have to say it was possibly canned soup the cook added salt to and an extreme amount of oregano. My first bite was a extremely hot mouthful of oregano followed by salt. They may have added a can of peas to the soup as well, by the color of the peas, you know they were not fresh. I kept stirring the soup and looking at the very small, toddler size pieces of chicken and the absence of rice…. i was served 2 more microwaved rolls with it. I skipped eating them as the first chewy roll was enough. The french fries served with my husbands meal were good, but they were fries…. he described his dish as buttery, salty and lacking flavor which was why he drizzled the hollandaise sauce lightly over the fish. Needless to say, we will not be returning. I feel bad for the staff. Our waiter and the bus girl were very friendly. I would save your money and go somewhere else for sure.
Ive included the updated menu in my photos. The prices no where justify the quantity or taste of the food here.

Nestled by the water, Toucan Grill and Fresh Bar boasts a picturesque location that promises a relaxing dining experience. However, my recent visit left much to be desired.

The restaurant’s prime waterfront location offers stunning views and sets the stage for an enjoyable meal. The service, too, was commendable, with attentive staff ensuring a fast and polite experience. However, the initial positive impressions were overshadowed by several disappointing factors.

While the service was prompt, the same cannot be said for the food. Despite the efficient service, there was an extensive wait for our meals to arrive. However, it’s worth noting that the grilled chicken stood out as a highlight, delivering on flavor and tenderness. Unfortunately, the overall quality of the dishes did not match the steep prices, leaving us feeling underwhelmed and disappointed.

**Outdoor Patio Atmosphere:**
Adding to the disappointment was the outdoor patio area, which was enclosed with plastic for the winter season. While understandable, what followed was unacceptable. Shortly before our food arrived, people began to smoke on the patio, where we were seated. As the crowd of smokers grew, the cigarette smoke permeated the air, overwhelming both the food and the atmosphere. This intrusion of smoke tainted what should have been a pleasant dining experience, leaving a sour taste in our mouths.

In conclusion, while Toucan Grill and Fresh Bar may boast a prime location and commendable service, the overall experience fell short of expectations. The slow arrival of food, coupled with mediocre quality and high prices, left much to be desired. However, the grilled chicken stood out as a highlight, showcasing the potential for excellence. Furthermore, the intrusion of cigarette smoke on the enclosed patio significantly detracted from the dining atmosphere. Unless improvements are made to address these issues, it’s difficult to recommend Toucan Grill and Fresh Bar as a dining destination, although it could easily earn a higher rating if not for the smokers’ presence.

Nothing about this place is fresh, soup was obviously from a can. I sadly recommend avoiding this place if you aren’t a boomer and have a kitchen

We were told this was THE place to eat. It was not bad. My ‘stuffed flounder’ was actually flounder with drizzled crab on top and definitely not stuffed. It was ok. Sweet potato fries were good. My dinner salad was average. New Castle was cold. View of the inner harbor and the boats was great. My dining partner got the Mahi Mahi kabobs [he asked for them blackened and they complied]. He said they were good. The bread was average. The service was good and our server worked hard. It was not a cheap dinner. Maybe I was expecting too much.

We were in Oriental for the Front Porch Music Festival. We decided to eat here due to the food vendors at the festival were running out of food.
I ordered the Shrimp basket and the menu read, served with fries or sweet potato fries and slaw. However, when my plate came out, I ask about the fries and slaw and was told it didn’t come with it. Paid $20 for six shrimp but never again!!!

We had eaten here a bit over a year ago and had a great experience. This time we brought several family members with us and had a not as stellar experience. The positives first… our server was utterly fantastic. She was attentive (without being annoyingly hovery), friendly, kept drinks topped up for all of us, and was accurate on orders. Actually she was the only super positive. Though the fries were good.

Menu prices were much higher than last time. We get it.. inflation.. but $20 for a burger and fries it should be better than average. Especially with other restaurants in town charging $9 for just as good or better.

Mahi mahi bites were shockingly greasy and very overcooked.

I couldn’t tell you what fish (or even if it was fish) in the tacos. Whatever protein it was, was cooked down to texture-less mush. The soft tortillas were hard almost to the point of crunchy.

The most negative part of the experience was the beginning. The hostess seemed utterly overwhelmed, despite there not being a large crowd. She was audibly cussing under her breath as she tried to figure out seating despite the presenceof small children near her. And only having 3 groups on the waitlist. She snapped at other staff. She also had everyone wait (up to half an hour) despite there being lots of open tables. It was so bad it almost became amusing.

Despite our earlier good experiences, and the valiant efforts of our waitress, we will likely not be returning.
