Tortuga’s is an absolute phenomenal classic Chicago style pizza joint. In all honesty, I was not sure what Chicago style looked like before entering this establishment, however this is not a pizza I will soon forget. Driving through Birmingham this was a highly rated pizza option as the synopsis was to stop and reset after a hectic Thanksgiving interstate drive. This was during the epic Vanderbilt vs. Tennessee game as depicted below. We called about 40 minutes ahead and waited 5 once we arrived basically ensuring this was as fresh and made to order as possible. Ordered a meatzza Chicago style and vegan style thin crust to cover our bases along with bacon garlic bread which was just absurd and mulched soon after the photo below was taken. We ordered to go, then decided to eat in. The manager brought out everything we needed which was awesome and we sat and watched the game while eating to our heart’s content. The picture’s below depict a memorable time. We were full, but not stuffed. Would recommend anytime as the service and pizza is one of a kind. Thank you Tortuga’s team!

Had to try this place after seeing it had been voted best pizza in Alabama by Food Network. We had a small stuffed pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and garlic. If you are ordering the stuffed pizza, it takes an hour to cook so keep that in mind. Food Network got it right. This was a delicious deep dish pizza. The small is about 3 pieces per person but they are large thick pieces and very filling. We could only eat two pieces each and had to save the other two. I ordered to go but went inside to pick up. It was a small but quaint venue with Chicago style decor. The staff was attentive and friendly. The price of the pizza is definitely on the higher side at $37.51 for the small. This will definitely be a return place for me when I’m the area and in the mood for some great deep dish.

Someone call the Real Housewives of Hoover because you need a reservation or to be a VIP to get a table for six at 6:30 on a Thursday not during the holiday season. We were turned away last night because they refused to accommodate our four adults and two kids. They had two other parties and suggested we sit at 2 different tables. That’s not fair because we haven’t seen our friends in a while. What’s the point of having dinner with friends AT SEPARATE TABLES?! We promptly did an about-face and left to eat at Salt Grass wherein they were appreciative. Think twice about Tortugas. I’m going to Chicago in March so I’ll just eat my deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s and not here.

Went to Tortugas because of the Chicago style pizza and atmosphere for lunch. We all ordered 4 single stuffed pizza slices at 1:20pm. Menu states no single slices after 2pm. Waitress cokes back and says the kitchen only has 2 slices left and won’t make more because “it’s too close to 2pm”. Strike 1.
So we order 2 slices and a small stuffed pizza. The pizza comes out and when we cut into it water or some liquid literally poured out of it. Which made the pizza so soggy. Strike 2
Then the bill comes and the waitress said she took some off the bill because of the kitchen being jerks. Only to have them run my card and add back the discount she gave us. Strike 3.
Then to add insult to injury, this Chicago themed restaurant had a Green Bay Packer jersey hung amongst all the Cubs, Bulls, Bears, and Blackhawk memorabilia. Anyone from Chicago knows that the Packers are our biggest rivals.

I visited today for lunch, specifically for the Chicago style pizza pie. I had the Carne special. It was fresh out of the oven, was so delish! The restaurant is a sports pizzeria atmosphere with televisions and sports memorabilia on the walls. The service was excellent and I very much enjoyed it.

Wow! Great pizza!! I dont think I’ve ever had Chicago style aside from UNO’s, so when I saw this I knew I had to try it. My family wanted to go somewhere else for dinner so I Door-Dashed it as my appetizer. Needless to say, I wasn’t hungry for my actual dinner. I planned to eat only one slice and save the rest for later, but that did not happen. I loved it so much I ate most of it. Completely ruined my dinner plans with the family but it was totally worth it haha! I highly recommend it.

Saw this place online months ago when heading back home from up North. My husband made a mental note and couldn’t wait to try it, so we drove up for his birthday, coming up on Monday. Got there as soon as it opened. We received a warm welcome and picked our own seat. The server JADA, WAS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! HONEST AND PERSONABLE! Anyway… being from Chicago, I really wanted to like this place. We ordered Arnold Palmer and a Coke; 2 Traditional salads. The salads were simple and just ok. The homemade dressings; blue cheese, ranch, and italian balsamic were great. We ordered a “stuffed” pizza but got a thin slice of pepperoni to share since the stuffed pizza takes a while. The slice of pepperoni was tasty, but the crust was NOT even close to an authentic, buttery, flaky, Chicago pizza crust, so I was nervous about the deep dish… Although it was visually pleasing on the service, It was a huge letdown. The first thing I noticed when my husband got his slice was the chunky bell pepper and onion! The cheese was delicious and plentiful, but my first taste at the center of the pizza was just lukewarm! I don’t know if the oven setting is too high since the crust was cooked well, but the heat is not penetrating the center of the pizza, so there is a HUGE loss of flavor there. The sausage was just ok, but I’m used to that distinctive POP of fennel from the sausage back home… I tasted SOME fennel, but it wasn’t pronounced, and there wasn’t much of it. The BIGGEST letdown WAS THE CRUST! Chicago pizza crust is so good I can make a meal off the crust alone. Who needs toppings! I’m a bread lover! This one was just a bland crust. It was crisp (almost too crisp) but NOT BUTTERY OR FLAKY! The server said she believed they used butter in the pan, but I tasted none, and I certainly didn’t see or taste that CHICAGO staple of CORNMEAL!!! If they use any, it’s not traceable in the dough, and there was none sprinkled in the bottom of the pan. If you’ve never had pizza in Chicago, you may try this and think it’s what Chicago pizza is made of, and maybe it is, somewhere, but certainly not from my neck of the woods. It’s good enough if you don’t know any better, but it doesn’t stand up to either UNO, Giordano, Gino’s East or West, Homerun Inn, etc… I’ve had them all and then some. I hope I don’t have to go all the way back to Chicago for that signature taste of pizza goodness but, I definitely won’t go back here unless I’m in the area and just want a simple slice of, no frills, Pepperoni… My husband did like the sauce though… It was still a Happy Birthday! Thanks anyway Tortugas…

1st time ordering, ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! From the customer service to the food, ALL BAD!
After spending $74 on 1 large thin crust pizza & 1 meatball sub, yes $74 dollars.
Waited 45 minutes because I was told that was how long it would be which was fine. What wasn’t okay was them giving me the wrong food, going all the way home which is in McCalla. To turn around, go back to get a cold meatball sandwich that they FORGOT to give me and then while I’m traveling back and forth my pizza was super cold.
The owners wife was the one who took my order, walked away when they called my name when my order was ready and then while my food was sitting there, she had the audacity to come back to the front and tell me that she knew they had called my name, my response to her was yes, can I please get my food.
Very rude of her to know that my name was called and she walked away.
The owners wife is also the one who gave me the cold forgotten meatball sandwich and also wanted to offer a small pizza stuffed pizza for my troubles.
This was the worst customer service I have seen/had in a long time.
While trying to give me a small stuffed pizza for next time, she wanted my information, it’s 2026. Give a gift card!
I didn’t order a stuffed pizza, nor do I like a stuffed pizza.
I was gone for over 3 hours getting food…..and wasted a lot of gas.
Next time, I will definitely go to Pizza Hut, for just as good of pizza and for cheaper.

PREVIOUSLY…I have been ordering the same thing from this location for 7+ years and I have always looked forward to those Fridays when we would reward ourselves with pizza and lasagna or pizza and a salad. We were greeted with warm smiles from several people as we walked in the door to pick up our call-in order. It was immediately packed up with napkins and forks in the bag, and the bag tied up to secure everything. When we got home, we had food that was still super hot and we didn’t need to warm it and our order was the same as what we received in the bag.
All of that has changed .I was extremely disappointed today and the last time I visited this location under new ownership and management.
CURRENTLY…They were not busy and our order was incorrect and not good. There was a kid behind the counter with super short shorts on rubbing and shaking his hair every two or three minutes, scratching his arms, and then wanting to deal with Orders without handwashing.. He needs training. Then, The boxes didn’t get put in a bag with napkins and forks …don’t ask…just bag it. That keeps it warm. The crust on the pizza was so hard you could barely bite it. Seriously??? We ordered a slice of pepperoni and sausage, but in the box was just a slice of pepperoni. Portion Sizes of the lasagna have changed and the lasagna was cold throughout the middle. The last time we got an order about three weeks ago they forgot to make the salad and we had to stay there and wait for that. It’s just disappointing to see such a great local business change hands resulting in its quality and Customer Service deteriorating to this point.
If you’re going to hire a bunch of teens, you’re going to have to teach them Customer Service and sanitary practices and stay on them. After two piss poor visits to a previously favorite spot… I think we’re just going call it quits. I hope they get a handle on the recipes and to-go packaging and customer service, so that they can be successful as new owners. Not on the right track right now Nothing was above 1 star today. I called the restaurant to talk with one of the owners, but they said that he was on a conference call. Any business scheduling conference calls during the dinner rush or the lunch rush is doing themselves a disservice.
