We were hoping for something more refined and fine-dining in quality, but overall the meal felt average in terms of the flavour and quality. The wagyu and uni nigiri had an unpleasant aftertaste from both the beef and the uni, and some dishes like the cheese marinated with miso and the sukiyaki spring roll which was mostly filled with glass noodle felt out of place in a omakase menu.
The service was warm and thoughtful, and every single dish was crafted with the chef’s precision and delicate touch, which left me deeply moved.
The balance of flavors, the aroma, and the harmony of the garnishes created a truly unforgettable experience.
The quality of the sushi was exceptional — something rarely found in Perth.
Among all the Japanese restaurants I’ve visited, I can confidently say this is the No.1 omakase in Perth.
The pairing with sake was also spot on — elevating each dish beautifully.
I will definitely be back.
Thank you for making a special day truly unforgettable.
Tora Sushi is only 10/12 seats, but it private, intimate and welcoming.
The food exceeded expectations. The set menu kept delivering with oysters, ceviche, chawanmushi and wagyu beef. I was so full come the end of the Sushi is was struggling!
The first time we dined in Feb, we met the chef said that he had just started here not long ago as well (he has 30 years experience in various countries like Japan and Dubai). Every single time we’ve come back there’s always a small twist or exciting dish that keeps us booking again and again.
My partner is a meat man that rarely gets impressed with seafood but that bluefin tuna is serving He talks about how amazing the seafood is afterwards more than the meat on the menu.
We’ve both travelled to Japan many times over the years and the sauces, peppers, and overall flavours really give us such a nostalgic hit that can’t be found elsewhere in Perth.
Thank you for looking after us Chef Tetsu san, as always we look forward to seeing you again in May.
To be fair, the sushi chef was really nice, friendly and she tries her best to accommodate all ten guests alone. It’s a huge feat given that most places I’ve been to usual have 2 chefs at the counter to make sure that each guests get the attention they need. I don’t blame her, but the service was slow, it was paced out very very slowly as she was mostly doing it all alone, with some help from an assistant who was pouring sake and fetching items for her. In terms of actual sushi making, she’s doing it all by herself which explains the delay.
Most places will pace the service based on how slow/fast the guests eat but not here. There’s no such luxury or capacity for the chef to do so, which is a shame from a customer experience perspective.
Taste wise, it’s fine. But as mentioned, the sushi choices were really basic, there’s hardly any premium ingredients. A small smidgen of uni on top of an eggplant sushi (okayyy?) and a few countable balls of ikura on my chawanmushi, and that’s it. Unagi was also thin and not meaty. It’s hilarious how the menu states “exceptional cuts” – cuts of what? An eggplant? What a joke. ♀️
Unlike other omakase places, there’s no abalone, no crab, no tuna (chuutoro or ootoro), no proper full sized uni gunkan (most places do in my experience), or at least give us a cholesterol bowl (chopped tuna, large spoonfuls of ikura and uni – very standard combo)…but no. None of these premium seafood.
Instead what we got, was common seafood like salmon, snapper, mackerel, prawn, octopus…you get the gist. Not impressed at all.
We do get a wagyu beef katsu at the end which was quite nice but honestly I’d rather they invest in their seafood instead. I came for the sushi experience after all. If I wanted good beef, I would go elsewhere.
Also there’s no green tea served (why??) and no hand towels (oshibori) for you to freshen up when you arrive. I’m quite surprised that they left these details out for a so called high end omakase experience when this is so, so basic.
And the menu. It’s printed on a piece of A4 paper?? I get it, the menu rotates. But it’s sending off cheap vibes right off the bat. Look at how it’s done overseas or elsewhere if you need some inspiration.
And like many others mentioned, the counter top is too high for us to see the chef in action. That’s another point deducted for customer experience.
It’s my first omakase experience in Perth and honestly this has left a very bad taste in my mouth. Won’t be back. Won’t be recommending anyone else to try.
We left very unfulfilled and my sister was still hungry after the experience.
To the owner, please do your future guests a favor and relook at the entire customer experience and details. People should get what they pay for.
I also noted the room was well insulated from the noise of the bar and street life outside. Stepping outside made you understand how well the outside world was excluded.
We loved the food which was well paced. The care that was taken to procure the ingredients (some fish and scallops from Japan) made it seem very special. Standouts were the sashimi and the Wagyu. I think they did well to clarify and accommodate to some dietary requests ahead of time by email.
We felt we had privacy, but if we wanted to engage with the chef he was proud to explain the ingredients or techniques.
I think I’ll make a point of returning as I feel these small places need to be supported. That, and I feel it’s a very good meal!
