Fully booked for several months so showed up at 2:55pm on a Monday & was able to get 2nd in line on the walk-in list that the staff sets out at 3:00pm. They start seating promptly at opening 4:00pm & we were able to be seated around 4:10/4:15pm after the host called for reservations that were not there.
Definitely make a reservation online, but if you have an hour or two to spare, I think it’s worth the wait to come on a weekday if you have never been.

Our favorites from best to least from what we ordered were the oysters, aged pork loin, shrimp, & meatballs (the meatballs are very large, we could have split one. Or I would skip this next time). We preferred the shiso rice over the seasoned rice they had that day, & we both had the red miso with clams.
All of the katsu’s were so good! The breading was super crispy and flavorful, & while everything was still super moist. I saw reviews about inconsistencies, but luckily all our items were very tasty. After looking at a couple other places because I was not sure I wanted to wait, I finally decided they did not look quite as good, & my husband & I were very happy we went here. I also really liked the hot mustard that came with the tonkatsu. The shredded cabbage & the two dressings provided were very tasty. Another server was offering tables more cabbage as we were packing up to leave.
The servers were polite during our interactions, but as it is an extremely busy place, not much in terms of checking in again once you place your order. Definitely felt a bit rushed. One server pushed the bill beside my arm from behind very quickly in passing which my husband did not really appreciate.
We have not had proper tonkatsu before (chicken katsu a handful of times), so I can’t compare to other spots on the island, but I would come back if I am able to make a reservation.

If you’ve heard of this place then you’ve probably heard nothing but rave reviews about it. Well, I will support that by stating that this place was absolutely amazing! Decided to take my son out to dinner and was in the mood for some delicious tonkatsu. We each got the 300 g tonkatsu with one shrimp and one oyster a piece. Everything was super crunchy on the outside and moist and delicious on the inside. We also each had the white clam miso which was so good if you’re in town and want some authentic Japanese tonkotsu, I highly recommend Tamafuji.
Also, reservations will help if you have larger parties, but I showed up at 6:00 p.m. on a Friday night and was seated within 10 minutes, so don’t be afraid to just wing it and show up.

Fantastic katsu, really light and airy breading while the protein is still moist and tender (whether that’s the ebi, chicken, or pork).

I got the mixed katsu set, and really liked all the different options. The shrimp had the best flavor and texture overall, with the pork being a close second. The oyster katsu was good, though I suggest not dipping it into the sauce since the flavor might get overpowered otherwise.

We had a very long wait but the food and experience was very nice. Getting to grind your own sesame seeds for the Katsu sauce was fun. The shiso rice was also a good choice.

This was high on my list too get a reservation and I finally procured one! You have to book 3 months in advance or wait in line right before the restaurant opens. The food was great, especially the oysters and shrimp. The pork is good, but the 300g was too much for me. The beer came out ice cold and tasted fantastic. It was a great meal and fantastic service. I would recommend and return.

While the food is good, I wouldn’t say it’s better than what I’ve had in Japan, and it’s certainly not worth booking months in advance. That said, it’s definitely better tonkatsu than what you’ll typically find in Oahu. It was decent overall, though the pork was slightly dry. I was expecting something more tender and juicy. It’s worth trying if you can walk in quickly, but I definitely wouldn’t wait in line for hours.

Amazing experience. So much good that we were stuffed. Try to make a reservation, either exactly 2 months before when the reservations open, or try the day of/day before in case any one cancels. Otherwise you will almost definitely have a 2 hr wait and I wouldn’t recommend waiting. We made a day of reservation for 4 pm. Loved the experience, from the hot hand towel to wash up, and the pickled vegetables to start, to the sesame that you grind yourself, and then the fantastic sizzling hot tonkatsu and we also had the shrimp and chicken katsu. The cabbage is freshly shredded in house and very fine.

(Note that if you want to get a walk in table, come at least at 3:30pm otherwise it will be a very long wait. We initially arrived at 4:10pm on Monday but the wait was already 2 hrs because this is not a short meal, it’s an experience. So we tracked reservations online and snagged a 4pm one while looking the next day.)

It was good. I like the different types of rice and miso soup options (shiso rice was delicious). Meat was moist and batter was crunchy. We waited 2 hours, not worth waiting that long for. Would only recommend if there’s no wait.

I’ve been here on three different trips and I’ve never been disappointed! The crunch on this tempura is truly like no other, and the oil flavor is very clean.

I’d recommend dining in over getting takeout (pictured), but if you have limited time/don’t want to wait 1+ hour during peak wait times, takeout is a good option. The only con is that the crunch quickly gets soggy in the takeout box and you don’t get the special rice or soup that’s included in the dine-in experience. It’s definitely worth it to wait if you have the time.

Another pro to dining in is the sesame seed grinding for your tonkatsu sauce. The aroma is very fresh and unique! You can choose between the sweet and savory sauce to dip, and I liked a combination of both.

We ordered a 5pc shrimp katsu set (pictured), 1pc pork katsu, 1pc oyster katsu, clam miso soup (seasonal), and the seaweed rice. The shrimp tempura is a shared favorite between my mom and I, but the pork and oyster are great too.

For drinks, I’d recommend the grapefruit shochu as a fresh, fruity cocktail to enjoy alongside the katsu. It’s manufactured in California so you can probably find it on the mainland as well, but I think any fizzy drink will complement the fried tempura nicely.

Staff and atmosphere are friendly, clean, and pleasant. While dining in, the servers walk around with a basket of shredded cabbage and were kind enough to give me 3 extra handfuls to enjoy with their delicious sesame dressing.

I will be coming back for my 4th visit soon!
