I recently dined and had a genuinely satisfying meal. If you’re looking for great katsu, this is the place to check out!
The star of the show was definitely the Pork Loin Katsu. It was incredibly delicious and really good—perfectly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. A must-try item on their menu!
The Tempura was also phenomenal. Light, airy, and fried to absolute perfection, it was a fantastic appetizer.
The Soba was decent, falling into the “ok” category; it did the job but wasn’t as memorable as the fried items.
The service was good—attentive without being intrusive. The ambiance is also good, making for a pleasant and comfortable dining experience.
One thing to note is that parking is available and convenient, located by a parking structure.
Overall, this is a good place to eat! The high-quality katsu and phenomenal tempura make it well worth the visit.

The panko was incredibly crunchy and light, and the meat super tender and juicy . The cabbage was really good to balance the fat of the fried meat and it comes with rice and a miso soup.
It is a little bit pricier than other Japanese restaurants but you got free cabbage / rice / miso soup refills ( around 30-40$ per person) so worth the price, and the ordering station was really easy to use

Food was delicious. Got the pork loin and loin katsu, with a side of shrimp katsu. Everything was nice and juicy with a great crunch without feeling greasy and heavy. The sauces were yummy but that tartar sauce was my favorite by far. I loved the free refills on the cabbage, rice, and miso soup. 10/10 will recommend and will be back!

This is one of the best places I’ve ever had tonkatsu! The katsu was so tender it melted in your mouth and the portions are very generous. The in house sauces and dressings perfectly complemented the tonkatsu and shredded cabbage. Staff was amazing and attentive. Dar took great care us on both of our visits! Can’t wait to come back.

One of the newer tonkatsu places in Honolulu with a slightly different menu concept that focuses on soba. I got the lemon soba combo set. The katsu was very good. Maybe not quite as good as Tonkatsu Tamafuji, but it’s up there. However, menu prices are lower than Tonkatsu Tamafuji for comparable amounts of food. The taste and tenderness of the pork was great. The size of the shrimp katsu was huge and taste was good, but the breading fell off easily. On the other hand, the soba could have been better. The flavor was alright but it simply got boring after eating half the bowl since they give you so much. It also didn’t go very well with the katsu, so I had to order a side of rice. If the combo came with a half portion of soba, a bowl of rice, and a little more katsu, it would have been perfect. The tsukemono dish barely had anything on it. The amount of cabbage that initially came with the meal was also small, but at least the refills on that were free. The mascarpone for dessert was delicious.
Service was fine. Even though the restaurant is small, utilizes tablets for ordering, and has a server robot, there were a lot of waitstaff for some reason. The robot was kind of useless though. It carried the trays of food, but a server was still needed to move the trays from the robot to the table. Refills are carried straight from the kitchen to your table by a server. Speaking of refills, they were very convenient to order through the tablet ordering system, whereas it can be awkward and take time to flag somebody down at other tonkatsu restaurants.
Overall, I would come again. But I would wait for the hype to die down, and get one of the sets without soba next time.
@Joe Okubo yeah, the way they responded to you originally was incredibly unprofessional (still visible on OpenTable for those curious), but to be fair, you did leave them a 2 star review on three different websites just because they couldn’t serve alcohol yet. Their menu has no alcohol on it and there are other reviews saying that it’s currently BYOB, so this shouldn’t have been a surprise to you. Also, as a Japanese person and having eaten at tonkatsu restaurants across Japan and the states, I can attest that beer is absolutely not required to enjoy tonkatsu. Insisting otherwise suggests alcoholism.

It was our first time to this restaurant. There is a tablet on each table that has the menu, but we asked for paper menus. It took us little while to realize that we needed to place our order through the tablet versus waiting for someone to come by and take our order.
Food was excellent! The tonkatsu and shrimp tempura had a nice crispy coating. The tonkatsu was very tender.
There was a robot cart that brought the food to the table, but two servers distributed the food.
The music was a little too loud for us, which made conversation a little difficult. But it drowned out other conversations, so you could hear the table next to you

Finally tried Tonkatsu Kuro! This spot has been on my radar for a while, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The restaurant has a sleek, modern vibe that fits perfectly with the area it’s in.
The service was phenomenal, huge shoutout to our server Andy! He was super personable and knowledgeable, answering all our questions about the menu. He even let us know that the Oreo mascarpone dessert (which is fantastic, by the way) comes from the owner’s gelato shop!
Now onto the food, everything was awesome. The shrimp were huge and tasted incredibly fresh. The tartar sauce they came with was flavorful and addictive. I had the tenderloin tonkatsu, and it was so tender and packed with flavor. I also love that the tonkatsu sets come with free refills of rice, cabbage, and miso soup.
My girlfriend ordered the kura soba with a half katsu, and it was another hit. The noodles were nice and chewy, and the whole dish felt refreshing.
I can definitely see why this place is so highly rated. I’ll be back again very soon.

This is an awesome new tonkatsu spot in Honolulu! Great prices, amazing atmosphere, and the tonkatsu is definitely the star of the menu. The soba is good too, but unless you’re a big soba fan, I’d stick with the tonkatsu. Everything is ordered through the touch screen and they have the rover waiters to help bring your meal to your seat. Highly recommend!

I’ve eaten a lot of tonkatsu in my life—greasy dives in Tokyo alleyways, pristine counters in Ginza—but there’s something about the pork loin tonkatsu here that hits me right in the gut, in the best way. It’s juicier than the tenderloin, with a bolder, porkier punch. The tenderloin’s softer, sure—like biting into a cloud—but it feels like it’s missing the soul, that rich, meaty feel that tells you you’re eating something worth the calories. The curry add-on is killer. If you like curry, you’re in for a damn good time. The salad comes in two flavors: ponzu and sesame. Both are fresh, clean, and do their job. The miso soup here is no throwaway sidekick. The rice is fluffy, perfect. Talking heavyweights, it’s this place versus Tamafuji. Tamafuji’s got the open kitchen—watching those guys work is dinner theater. But the downside? You walk out smelling like you’ve deep-fried yourself. Here, you leave with your dignity and your date still interested. They serve soba, shrimp, pork—it’s a nice lineup. Tamafuji ups the ante with oysters, and their rice is better, no question. Their salad’s finer cut too—like it’s been shaved by a samurai. Bottom line? These two restaurants are in a league of their own. Nothing else on the island even breathes the same air. Tamafuji feels more like a family outing, while this place—Kuro—leans more date night, over perfect cuts of pork. I can’t say which is better. I won’t. They’re both #1.

Second time here and it was just as good as my first. I got the tenderloin and my nephew got the loin. To be honest, we both couldn’t tell the difference! Both were moist and flavorful. We skipped the soba because if we wanted soba, we would have gone to soba restaurant.
Some reviewers complain about the lack of service or the robot “assistant.” The service was the best kind – friendly and efficient. If you need free refills on your miso soup (really good and always hot) or salad, just use the tablet. If you need something else, use the tablet to ping them.
As for the robots- it’s fun to see and if it helps cut labor costs to keep the menu prices down, I’m all for it. Some “traditionalists” may not think the same, but they can go elsewhere for that experience. We were only a party of two so we sat at the “commune table” which was fine. Lots of space and we could have a private conversation.
All in all – great food and service that is fairly priced. Will come again.
