This place being rated 4.3 is downright criminal. Looked through some of the reviews to figure out what was going on here and it seems that most of these people were expecting a traditional Japanese meal (not what they market themselves as) or over priced and under portioned (which is categorically false). I did the tasting menu which was priced really generously for the quality and quantity that I received. If somehow you looked through the menu, saw meatball bao (which was delicious) and thought that you were going to get a traditional Japanese meal then I think *you* are the problem. Everything was delicious, the prices and portions are exceedingly fair. As for service I sat at the bar so thats all I can speak to, but the bartender was attentive, personable, and charming. Everything I ate was inventive and delicious and $55 for their tasting menu is honestly a steal. I travel for a living and often find myself underwhelmed by the DC food scene and I was not underwhelmed by this. The negative reviews are frankly out of touch and this spot is absolutely worth your time. Shouts out to the mentaiko pizza, the uni pasta, and the meatball bao. Make sure you order one of the deconstructed sake bombs as it is Wiley Dufresne level “how does this work and why does it taste so good?”

To be honest we were expecting to be blown away by the food for the prices they charged. we ordered the korean style garlic bread, uni pasta, mentaiko corn pizza, and the seasonal layered apple cake. it was the most mid japanese fusion food i’ve ever tried, no matter the price range. i don’t understand how you can call an uni pasta “uni” when you cannot taste ANY uni. the same with the mentaiko, it was just pizza with corn on it. not to mention the portions were insanely small and we left the restaurant still not full. the best part of the meal was the tiny piece of apple cake. we also ordered 2 drinks which were okay. also, the service was below mediocre. When we mentioned the name for the reservation, we were met with a stank face when she couldn’t find our name, which she had to literally scroll down a few swipes. the upstairs dining area was decorated cute, which is the only positive thing i could say about this restaurant. would not recommend this place to ANYONE or come back ever again unless they fix their very very very below mediocre food. please consider tasting and reevaluating the menu you are serving before charging high prices for it. very disappointed to say the least.

Came here to dinner with some friends, but didn’t realize a cap game was going on so it was very busy. Not their fault obviously. This is not real Japanese food. This is more American or Italian if anything. The aranchini was okay, I’ve had better for sure. The garlic bread was good, but also not the best. The Uni pasta was OK. The best thing I had was the corn pizza oh my God it was so yummy. Not sure if I’d come back, but it was interesting to try this. Also, they have a gratitude at 20%. You have six people or more and I only had four people on my table so I was very confused why they did that. That’s messed up. I think I should have a choice of tipping whatever I want versus having it forced on me.

Really impressed with this place. Fun, delicious, and innovative Japanese fusion. We went for the award winning mentaiko corn pizza, which is a must try. Super unique flavor combo. We were expecting the corn pizza to be the best thing we ate but the pepperoni with the dashi hot honey took the cake. That was one of the best pieces of pizza I’ve had. The sauce had umeboshi which added acidity and tanginess. I don’t know what they put in their hot honey but it was the best hot honey I’ve tried. It must have dashi or maybe togariashi. All in all, this place rocks.

Highly anticipated visit to this place. Really shocked about the lack of flavor from what we ordered. We had the arancini, uni pasta, and Philly cheesesteak pizza. The tomato sauce for the arancini was its saving grace. The uni pasta was straight bland. A dash of salt would have helped. No way to compensate for it. The Philly cheesesteak pizza was good. Service was phenomenal. Our server was top notch.

This was one of the worst Japanese experiences that I have had here in the Washington DC area. As a Japanese person who has recently moved to the United States of America I often assume that any kind of “Japanese” restaurants that I see in America is not going to taste that great and what I am used to in my big beautiful home country of Japan in the land of the rising Sun. However, the experience that I had today was absolutely PATHETIC. The service was absolutely atrocious. The person never asked me how we were doing. We were rarely ever greeted. And they never even bothered to refill our water and he literally slammed the receipt down and said thanks for coming and just walked away without asking whether or not we wanted anything else this experience was absolutely garbage.

On top of that, the food portions were absolutely heinously awful. The prices were extremely high, and the food portions were tremendously low. The pasta tasted like just generic canned tomato pasta that anyone can make and for us to be charged $28 for this absolute garbage was such a disgrace to my beautiful Japanese culture. I am sick and tired of these “japanese” restaurants popping up all over the place because that is what is deemed in style right now when they really should have absolutely zero reason to be creating these kind of things this is such a disgrace to my Japanese culture, and I find this appalling and pathetic that people still want to come here

If you want to have actual proper Japanese food like the stuff that I grew up when I was in the Hokkaido region of Japan then do not go to this establishment. You can definitely find significantly better places in Virginia and you can save yourself a trip in the godforsaken part of Chinatown.

We came to Tonari for dinner for 2 and had a good experience. Overall, everything was tasty but the only dish that we found incredible and would come back for was the corn pizza. And we definitely will come back for the pizza! Other than that, we got the burrata (it was ok- not enough chili), garlic bread (yummy!), and two pastas (good but not excellent).

Amazing place! The food is delicious. They have a happy hour during the week where the pizza is half off. I have been coming here for years and every time is amazing. They often do specials as well. The service is great and the employees are super attentive. Great both dining in and take out!

Unique dishes available including Godzilla (pasta with alligator) and Detroit style pizzas. But their drinks memorable especially the Cream of the Crop with whiskey.

A pleasant dining experience while visiting DC. The Burrata comes with thick slices of bread. Not spicy at all and full of zesty, sweetness from the clementine. The Godzilla Ragu is al dente and pairs well with the ragu sauce. I was hoping to have more bread to finish off the reminder of the sauce after we finished the pasta. The pizza is too salty for my liking. Overall, the food is great, friendly staff, clean. Will definitely come back when I’m in the area.
