Really solid Mexican spot! The chicken burrito and enchiladas were very yummy, and their rice and beans were spot on. Their chips are also a must get, perfectly crispy and not overly salty. Also love the deals they always have for online ordering,
Their main dishes are more on the salty side, wish it was a little more balanced and more spice, but would definitely recommend as a great, consistent spot for Mexican food in the area!

Recently visited Pittsburgh and was in the mood for some Mexican food! From the entrance the environment was very inviting and the waitress was friendly. After being seated we were greeted quickly, we ordered some fun drinks highly recommended the Blood Orange Margarita! Following the good drinks the chips and queso were fresh and filling. After getting our entrees I ordered the enchiladas verdes which was so delicious and my friend ordered the chicken chimichanga. We were very happy with our night out decision for Mexican and decided we were going back the next night. Both nights were equally as good. Will definitely be returning when back in Pittsburgh 🙂

Love Tocayo! Amazing atmosphere for sitting in and extremely fast service for take out! Never have any issues with the food and the staff is nice and helpful. Lots of vegetarian options and the food is SO good. The cocktails are banger, especially the Mojitos. They also have lots of margarita options, including a frozen margarita, and also have sangria. Great for a date night and a nice spot to take out-of-town visitors to Pgh. It’s always a great experience! Only downside is it can be a bit on the loud side and busy (may have to wait for a spot), but that is because it is so popular! It is worth the wait and usually not bad. The kitchen is open late (later than most other places on Walnut St), which is great for a late-night bite, and if you go at non-peak hours or late into the evening, it’s a cozy and quiet experience.

Tocayo-Shadyside has excellent food. Delicious, perfectly crafted cocktails. I had the Jamaica Margarita and my Mom had a frozen Mango Marg. The guacamole is one of the best in the city. I was expected to be charged more for it, since the menu listed it’s cost as “market price”. But I believe it came to $14 for an appetizer portion fit for two.
For my entree I tried the mix and match tacos. I had the fish taco, which was insanely good. And I tried a chicken chorizo taco, which was very good. These came with a very flavorful and nicely portioned side salad. My Mom tried the shrimp taco and she raved about how good it was.
Service was nice enough. As far as atmosphere goes. Tocayo is beautifully decorated with vibrant, colorful and cheerful decor. But the overall vibe from staff and other patrons was the opposite of cheerful, warm and vibrant. It was sterile and muted. That was kind of a drag. Maybe they didn’t particularly like that my eight year old son was with me? He’s very well behaved and quite frankly, the life of the party anywhere we go. Maybe they could take a nod from him and loosen up and crack a smile once in awhile.
I would give them another try. But if I get the feeling my kid is unwelcome again, then I’ll never go here again.

My meal consisted of chips and salsa, a blood orange margarita, 2 tacos (chicken and chorizo, and steak), the white bean chili, and an espresso lava cake. Solid food all around. The green tomatillo is a must, and the white bean chili was a stand out as well. The tacos were great, the margaritas were tasty, and the dessert hit the spot. Consistently served great food here. I paid $80+ for 2 adult meals with margaritas, 1 dessert, 1 taco for a child with a horchata drink, and chips and salsa. Overall, a 4.5 out of 5.

I love Mexican food! Naturally that means I had to eat at Tocayo when it was an option. I got the chicken fajitas and my boyfriend got the shredded chicken chimichangas. Everything was delicious!! As a starter with had chips, queso and tomatillo, which you could tell was so fresh. I’d highly recommend.

A lovely experience filled with great food and great service. So many good things to choose from, but some of the ones that stuck in my mind were the guacamole, and shrimp (grilled) tacos, and the steak dish. Oh, and my was was raving about the desert flan. The drinks were pretty well made too. Overall, a great experience. Would love to come back.

Exceptional queso and tortilla chips. Mediocre enchiladas. Loved my rice, enjoyed my beans. Not very flavorful in general. Suited for a casual, chatty dinner with friends with a stronger focus on dining as a social experience than a culinary one.

Really nice mexican place with a good atmosphere. It is general moderately priced, but I’d say it’s worth the taste and the quality.
The horchata pitcher is the best thing you can order if you’re more than 2 people, and I’d definitely recommend their enchiladas as well.
The rice and the burritos are really well cooked and the staff helps you with your specific taste as well.
