We are an independent family owned BBQ restaurant. We offer some of best BBQ food in the city. Everything that we serve is made from scratch on a daily basis. A few of our most reccomend dishes are our smoked brisket, grilled chicken wings, baked beans, potato salad and our famous coleslaw. So if you are a fan of BBQ food then this is the place you’ll want to stop and satisfy those hunger pains.

Man, oh man! Talk about good, home cooking.. I’ve been working a few blocks down from this gem for a few months now and everyday I pass Backyard BBQ with their smoker just rollin smoke! I finally tried it today and am so glad I did.. the food is delicious and quality and quantity are perfect as well. Definitely one of Roanoke’s best!!

There is a lot of BBQ out there, and so much of it feels so sanitized and boring. TJ’s stands head and shoulders above the competition.
Are you sick of dry brisket? I know I am. TJ has the remedy. The smoke ring and fat layer. Oh man. So good.
The food has character. It doesn’t taste like you got it at a restaurant but like you’re at a family get together.
The service is friendly. They have loads of good sides and Kool-Aid to drink.
Show up early, though. They’re open until they run out. It seems to be a family business.
I will definitely be returning.

Best bbq I’ve had. Amazing chicken wings, sausage, ribs, brisket… everything is so good. Probably the best mac and cheese I’ve had and definitely the best baked beans ever. Go early cause they sell out quick

I love this place. I got the best greens I’ve ever put in my mouth. The chicken was fabulously smoked and the Mac salad is made in house. They don’t have brisket every day, I’m willing to just keep trying to catch it while I eat everything else than actually remember the schedule.
Go eat here, just leave me some.

I’m visiting from out of town and was looking for places to eat. Saw this on Google and and kept missing them because they’re only open certain days. Finally got a chance to go and it was very much worth waiting for! The meat was delicious, tender, well seasoned! The sides were great as well. My friend and I got rib tips, chicken, Mac salad, Mac n cheese, baked beans, cole slaw. Yummy!!!

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! we were driving through the area on our road trip the other day cutting across town from the Blue Ridge Parkway to the highway (needed to save some time! :)) We were craving BBQ so I searched on the Maps the places nearby and with all the stellar reviews I couldn’t not try it out! When we arrived it took a minute to see it and its sign as its in a very unassuming location. But the smokers are also right out front, you definitely have to know it’s there to find it! The inside is small and the food is definitely what gets all the focus. But this place is a diamond in the rough. We both got the pulled pork sandwich with a side of Mac salad. I took the Honey BBQ sauce and my husband got the spicy Bbq Sauce. WOW! Our plan was to eat and drive so we got it all to go. But once we got in the car and started eating we just sat there quietly eating and forgot we needed to be driving. we just enjoyed the delicious smokey sweet flavor! I love BBQ and grew up in the south, I am no expert but this team knows what they are doing! I would love to go back and try the ribs and brisket. ugh! I wish! It seems like a family run place with the young ones working the register, so sweet. When we left the guy was tending the meats on the smoker ( I am thinking he was TJ?). Nice young guy and so very gracious! It its simple, authentic food, done well. I hope he and his team go far, as he is doing it right. Good on you TJ! damn that’s some good BBQ!

Diamond in the rough. Family owned and operated. Really impressed with their service and their food. Seating area could be a lot more organized and presentable, but other than that it’s good stuff!
You HAVE to get their hushpuppies and Mac n’ cheese! 100% incredible. Best I’ve ever had

From the minute I arrived in the neighborhood, which was quaint and memorable, I knew.. From the minute I couldn’t find a place to park, I knew.. From the minute I saw the big smoker with the other grills smoking, blocking me from parking, I knew…
As I pulled up, I was lucky enough to find a spot right up front, right next to the big smoker. It was early they had just opened but I knew this family run business had been at it long before my arrival. From the young man up front, to the family members running around back, everyone was busy and had smile. That is the true meaning of family run business. I mean it just felt right.
Even though I’m not a big fan of coleslaw, the young man behind the counter challenge me to try their’s. Next thing I know is that I was eating it! The brisket was perfect, the rub for the brisket is deep with flavors and it had my Jaws sticking together. Hands down, on my top 3 best BBQ in the world. See ya soon Backyard!

Didn’t even know this spot existed , Just happened to be riding down Melrose and saw the smokers outside with the smoke rollin so I had to try it. It surpassed my expectations. The chicken and ribs fell right off the bone and had plenty of seasoning. The Mac and cheese and green beans were phenomenal. Dosent remind you you of a typical restaurant but more like a family owned restaurant that cares for their customers. I immediately told all my friends about it and will be eating here a lot more frequently !

I was so excited to try this place- mostly because of all the 5star reviews, but also… I was starving for ribs.
Let me first say, this place and its menu is def authentic backyard BBQ! I could smell the love and time that goes into cooking their food long before I got there. Service was great- dude was polite and helpful- prices were what I expected.
My reason for 3stars is this: I ordered a half rack. There was barely any “sauce” at all on the ribs….like, VERY minimal. Meat did not “fall off the bone” like I had expected- actually, the meat was way more dry than juicy. Also, there was quite a bit of “dry rub” or seasoning…I might even say excessive-which, in turn, obviously caused the ribs to be super salty. The rub was very, very, very hot…spicy hot. I can’t remember a time when I’ve had to grab a drink in the middle of eating ribs because my mouth was uncomfortably burning. They were out of Mac and cheese…and this was around 2pm. Perhaps that’s normal,as I hear it’s awesome. I ordered green beans instead and they were phenomenal. As for the ribs…I was truly disappointed. Im no Rib Expert, nor do I claim to be, so maybe super salty hot n spicy with minimal sauce is how they’re supposed to be.
…idk.
Perhaps I just got a funky batch or it was just an off day….I will most definitely try this place again because I want to be fair, but I also wanted to be honest in my review.
