Consistently great, 10/10.

I have been a customer of Tipsy Samurai over the years. I was there on their soft opening up until today where my fiancè and I are considered “regulars”.

Consistently great. That is how I chose to describe the experience. The moment you come in, you are invited to an experience like no other. Hospitality is one of the best in the city. It’s like you have been invited to a humble home, where your friends cook you a meal, with fresh ingredients, some familiar, some are not, but you know, whatever it is, it will always be great. That experience.

Food-wise, I would say, I have tried probably 85% of the regular menu selection whilst I always make sure I get a taste of their seasonal offer like their Hamachi Tataki, Boxed Sushi, Chicken Liver pâtè, which were all fantastic. My go to order out of the regular menu is crispy gyoza spring rolls, small tonkatsu ramen with black garlic oil, pork belly, chicken, and bacon wrapped yakitoris which I usually pair with a side of their Japanese rice. I usually finish it off with their honey ice cream.

Drinks. Let me tell you, their owner or
manager was a sake brewer so you know this place has the real deal. My fiancè loves their sake, whisky, and beer. Recently, I have been exploring into their wine selection. Their staff are very knowledgeable about the drinks they offer.

The team is consistently good. Same standard across the servers, bar tenders, and obviously their cooks. They work under pressure when it gets really busy sometimes but they stay calm, collected, and they all exudes happiness while working. The space is small yet it is thoughtfully organized with artwork that makes a good impact, funky yet classy, and may I just say, the place is insanely clean.

This place is totally a gem!

My friends and I had such a fun Halloween night at Tipsy Samurai Bar + Charcoal Grill, enjoying some really tasty dishes!

The first time I visited this place was for their ramen, but this time we came back to try their dinner menu and it definitely lived up to our expectations.

To start the meal, each of us ordered a cocktail. We especially loved the Hello Kitty cocktail super smooth and fragrant with a lovely peach aroma.

We ordered the Five Meat Skewers, though the portion was a bit small for three people. Each skewer had great flavor, but unfortunately, they were all served quite cold, as if not reheated properly before serving.

Next, we had the Karaage Chicken juicy on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside, pairing very well with the sour ranch dip. One order only came with five pieces, so if you go with three people, you might want to get two orders.

We also tried the Tipsy Dynamite Sushi. The taste was fine, but the rolls were not tightly packed they fell apart easily when we picked them up, which made them a bit hard to eat.

For dessert, the Earl Grey Tiramisu really surprised us with its elegant presentation and unique flavor combination definitely a treat for anyone who enjoys Earl Grey! As for the ice cream, it was slightly icy and not very smooth, but since it’s handmade, we still appreciated the effort and taste.

Overall, the staff were very friendly, and we had a great experience. We’d love to come back again to explore more of their menu!

Went to Tipsy Samurai on Christmas Eve and had a great experience. We went early around 5 PM and were able to reserve a table over the phone about 20 minutes ahead for two people.
We ordered à la carte. The 8-piece sashimi was very fresh, both the tuna and salmon. The plating was beautiful and the wasabi was fresh and shaped like a little flower, which was a nice touch.
The pork bombs were super crispy and juicy, and even the chips with the sauce were very flavourful. We also had the quail egg and bacon skewers, which were surprisingly delicious.
For mains, we ordered the creamy udon and the miso tonkatsu ramen. The creamy udon was excellent. It had a seafood base and a rich, creamy umami flavour that really stood out. The miso tonkatsu ramen was more average in comparison. It lacked umami and was a bit bland for my taste, and the noodles were slightly clumpy. I would recommend adding chili oil or garlic oil if you order it, as that would help boost the flavour.
One thing to note is that this restaurant leans toward authentic Japanese flavours, which can be quite strong and savoury. If you prefer a lighter or more muted flavour profile, this may not be the right spot for you.
For dessert, we had the cheesecake and the ice cream sandwich. The cheesecake was delicate and tasty, and the ice cream sandwich was very visually appealing with a sunflower-shaped wafer.
Overall, a really enjoyable meal with standout dishes and great presentation. Would definitely return.
P.S. They were playing Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa on a tiny projector in the waiting area. Look above the entry door if that’s your kind of thing!

Its a nice cosy place to eat with family or your date. I was my own date so I went alone I ordered the Yakitori, they offer you a set menu or you could order all the meat and veg options. Each option has 2-3 pieces. Also ordered Sushi. It was too big a size for an amateur like me to hold in chopsticks but it was good. Tasty and fresh. I highly recommend their sushi. Finished my meal with earl grey tiramisu and it was really good. The addition of mint really gives a kick to the bite. Its not overly sweet neither is the tiramisu overly powering. It has the right mixture of everything. I would recommend this place. I am happy I came here. Now I don’t need to travel to Toronto just because I crave sushi. I have a go to place right here in Regina. Th staff is very nice and ambience is soothing. They also have a nice bar and very good drink menu if you fancy variety. I would say this place is 5/5 for me! Oh I also got a Sapporo but forgot to click picture they have it on tap.

Friday night was an 8 Course Omakase Dinner ($58/person) for my friends and I.

Immediately I ordered a Takasago Plum ($12). It’s a Japanese plum/apricot infused with junmai sake from Ishikawa, Japan. It smelled like whiskey, but I throughly loved it. It was sweet and fruity, a great drink to sip on. Now into the 8 courses:

1st course – Agebitashi: We thought we’d be getting eggplant, but think it was zucchini. Either way, it was soaked in what tasted like light dash and soy sauce based broth. We really liked this.

2nd course: Japanese sweet potato tempura with maple ginger cheese sauce and almond slices. It tasted really good, not greasy at all. True Japanese style tempura.

3rd course: Two slices of Atlantic salmon sashimi and two slices of yellow fin tuna sashimi. We were impressed with the light flavour, wasn’t super fishy tasting at all.

4th course – Kaijiru: Claim miso soup with Asari Manila clams. Very flavourful.

5th course: Their signature grilled Yakitori skewers. One was chicken, one was cherry tomatoes and the other was pork belly. The pork belly was melt in your mouth, one of our favourites.

6th course: Aburi Salmon rolls with cream cheese. It was fire-tourced in-front of us. These were bigger than expected, we were getting full by this part.

7th course: Half size tonkotsu ramen. It was topped with a chain pork slice, half egg, bamboo and nori seaweed. This was my favourite. The depth of flavour in this bowl is astounding. I also whole heartedly love warm, marinated eggs.

8th course: Hand made vanilla icecream. Good finish to the night. We were very full by the end and were happy for a light finish.

All of us were left extremely happy. Service was great and attentive. All in all, took us just over 2hrs for everything. We were very full by the end of it. I highly recommend this dinner if you love Japanese food.

It’s been awhile since I visited Tipsy Samurai, so I was really glad to get the chance to return tonight. We ordered a Chicken Karaage Bowl ($18), Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen ($19), Sapporo on tap($8.50), Hello Kitty cocktail ($12), and Hoji-cha cheesecake ($7.50).

So note to self, Friday night is very busy and you need to reserve a table in advance, even if it’s for 2 people. We luckily only had a 30 min wait, but the restaurant was quite full.

It was quite busy, so we ended up waiting at least 15 minutes for our drinks. We weren’t offered nor brought water. But when we did get our drinks, I was very happy. I absolutely loved the Hello Kitty cocktail. It was made with apricot brandy, peach schnapps, lemon juice, milkis, grenadine, and sprite. I found it fruity but not too sweet. As for the Sapporo, I’m actually really liked it too. I don’t like beer, so I find this beer light and refreshing.

Now on to the food. If you love spicy ramen, this is a good place to eat. And as for the Karaage Bowl, I’m obsessed. It truly reminds me of Japan. The chicken is moist, light and flavourful. You can tell it was marinated. It’s served on top of a salad tossed in a sesame dressing and beneath that is Hokkaido rice. Everything tasted high quality and light, allowing you to enjoy a drink and even a dessert. Which is exactly what I did.

The hoji-cha cheesecake was small, but it was home made and a great finish. It had a deep flavour that I couldn’t place, which is the nuttyness of the hoji-cha.

I have to mention, that we felt the service was really lacking. Like I said, they were busy, but we didn’t get water, had to ask for utensils and was never checked on while we were eating.

But, the food was extremely good and reminds me so much of Japan. If you want truly unique, high quality, Japanese flavours and food, this is the place to go.

I will be returning for that 8 course dining experience, but I’ll definitely be making a reservation.
