I’ve been here a few times before and it’s basic diner fare. I’m always on my way to somewhere else so I get takeout. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes you get a “breakfast sandwich” that is better described as a DIY version of breakfast with no sandwich in sight (photo – this was a “bacon and egg sandwich on a biscuit”). Maybe don’t do takeout for a better experience.

First, what a wonderful locally-owned restaurant this is, very much in the style of diners that were more common and popular some decades ago. Having said that, it is better than those diners by a long shot. For those of you old enough to know about it, this structure used to house a Howard Johnson’s restaurant. “Ho-Jo’s” was a chain which was quite popular years ago especially for the many Americans who were taking to the open roads with families in cars. It is fully modernized and only the shape of the outside structure gives this away, along with a photo of Howard Johnson’s to the right of the cash register area. There are lots of Greek cuisine options along with traditional American fare like sandwiches and salads. I opted for the Gyro dinner platter, which came with large fries and a salad. It was served open-face style with pita and Tzatziki sauce on the side. My wife had a tuna salad and we both had ice teas. For those who opt for dinner here, alcohol is an option as well. I thought the service, from an old-school waitress who called us “darlin'” and “hun” was fun and professional. The food and service is efficient and the busy nature of the Tip Top demonstrates that its customers appreciate all of that. I love that this is a one-of-a-kind that also connects with the past, but updates to the present. If and when we go back to this area again, I’d gladly head to this bargain priced destination.

If you want a simple, dinner experience for a price that doesn’t break the bank then Tip Top is a great choice. The coffee stays full, and the staff are friendly.

We’ve eaten at Tip Top for years. It’s food is basic and filling. Our choice is breakfast, occasionally lunch, and it is always hot. The servers are fast, to the point, pay attention to your requests, and are great. If you are looking for a quiet place to eat, this is not the place. It is loud, crazy, and absolutely a treat to enjoy! Only draw back; parking can be a bit wild. Just pay attention.

Excellent service and the food was great! This was my first time eating inside at this restaurant, and it reminded me of eating at some diners when I was a kid. Family oriented and friendly atmosphere. Josie was my waitress and she did a great job. Would highly recommend this place. Didn’t have to wait to be seated, I was seated right away. And I had my food in no time. Not to mention they were busy, but it didn’t seem to slow them down.

We stumbled across Tip Top while in town for a UVA baseball camp. Great food, good choices for everyone, and waitresses were very friendly. The pizza was outstanding. Definitely seems like a great neighborhood restaurant that has repeat customers, which is always a good sign. Thank you for two great dinners Tip Top!

This was our first time at Tip Top and it was phenomenal all around. The pastrami and Swiss was absolutely stellar. The Italian combo sub was even better somehow. The service is excellent and the diner atmosphere is perfect. We will be returning many times.

Perfect diner experience: no muss, no fuss. Grits, tomatoes, bacon & eggs — all good. My partner got blueberry pancakes, said he’d never be able to finish, but he managed!
