Recently went and tried Tien Dat with some friends. I got the Bun Bo Hue – which was good but nothing spectacular. The staff were friendly which was a plus.

However, the staff did not inform me that I would incur an additional expense (of $1) for my request for fresh chilli. I often frequent other Vietnamese restaurants and would argue that this is not the norm. It would have been fine if I was informed of this ahead of time.

Tien Dat was, regrettably, a profound disappointment. What should have been a simple, comforting dish arrived uninspired and carelessly executed — rice lacking fragrance and texture, flavors muted to the point of indifference, and ingredients that felt more functional than thoughtfully prepared.

Service mirrored the kitchen: distant, inattentive, and devoid of warmth. Dining here felt less like an experience and more like an obligation fulfilled.

A restaurant’s true charm lies in the care it extends to both plate and patron — and on this visit, that care was nowhere to be found

Went with friends on a busy Saturday night. The waiter just grunted, “your friends are upstairs,” without direction. We waited 15 minutes for service, and the waitress seemed annoyed when we asked for menus. Seating was cramped, orders were wrong, and when we told them, they refused to fix it and still made us pay.

Food was average and overpriced. My “gluten-free” meal had wheat noodles — unacceptable given my husband’s coeliac disease. The place was unbearably loud, and staff were yelling at customers. One waiter even shouted at a table and made them leave. The whole experience ruined our night — never again.

Was told this is the oldest Vietnamese restaurant in the area, and after trying the grilled beef on vermicelli I am definitely happy with it, full of flavor like no other!

I eat Vietnamese food constantly and although tien dat was good years ago, its quality has gone down hill. The restaurant looks aesthetically appealing but the food is bland as all hell. The pho is bland and watery, their broken rice pork chop tastes powdery, and their shredded pork rice paper roll has a few tiny measly pieces of meat. The most disappointing meal I’ve had in a while. Their only star is for their spring rolls which is frankly still, average.

I have been coming here for a while with my 2 young children. Every time it has been so good! Personally, I love the Hanoi spring rolls and sliced rare beef pho. It’s very clean and the service is warm and welcoming. Will be coming back for many years to come!

The Banh Cuon was flavoursome as it should be, overloaded with dried onions which is subjective.

The grilled pork and noodle but more suited to the warmer weather. Made fresh.

Service was a bit slow initially with having to ask for menu. Once ordered food arrived quickly.

$5 charge for a pot of hot water and single tea bag.

I really didn’t think it stood out or above any other Vietnamese eatery but extra star for having banh cuon on the menu.

As usual, food was extremely fresh and tasty. Service was good, although didn’t enjoy being the 1st table from the front door, which is why I marked down for atmosphere. Upstairs is much nicer. Definitely will return for an amazing meal and a great price.

The good: food was priced well, orders were taken quickly
The not so good:the pho was lacking any real flavor, it was incredibly hard to hear the person next to you as people were sandwiched into the venue and lastly one person on our table was waiting for their man to come out for 20 minutes after everyone else had received their meal making it awkward for the rest of the party to make the choice of being rude or letting their food go cold.

I have been to tien dat before and walked away happy however after last night I doubt I’ll return.

Tasty and clean restaurant. 2 levels and seating can be quite tight especially with kids and babies. Staff stuff up the online booking, but fast service for food. Tasty and fresh, one of the best ones in box hill.
