WOULD YOU DRIVE 90 MINUTES? Because that’s how far a one way drive from Rockwall to Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp in Athens is. We first discovered the Cajun-Tex-Mex Fusion restaurant in Beaumont. The SE Texas chain has steadily been growing its footprint north, but the closest one you can find to DFW is actually in Athens. This place is next level, and combines the best elements of Louisiana and Texas cultural cuisine in a way that just feels right.

But I’m seriously asking: would any of you reading drive 90 minutes just to eat dinner, and then 90 minutes back? Because to me, the 3 hours of cruising the Texas backroads and enjoying music while the sun was setting was a part of the entire nights experience.

It would be very easy if not expected to be caloricly negligent at a place like Tia Juanita’s. I wouldn’t blame you for easily consuming 2,000+ calories in a single sitting here. Chips and Salsa, Gumbo, Powerful frozen cocktails, bacon wrapped shrimp drenched in garlic butter. Boudin Quesadillas. More than I can type.

Jessica found a way to keep it on track with a water to drink and a shrimp salad without any dressing. Basic stuff, but better than skipping the whole place.

I ordered Steak Fajitas, but skipped the tortillas to save a few hundred calories there.

Sometimes when I come to a place like this, I get really jealous that we don’t have one in Rockwall or anywhere in North Texas for that matter. The concept seems to be too perfect and hopefully it’s only a matter of time before one or more of these reach closer to DFW. I’m telling you now it’s going to be a slam dunk hit in a day comments.

Until then, maybe a short road trip to Athens is a very, very good idea. Just make sure you come hungry.

We went to the Tia Juanita‘s in Athens. There’s one in Waco while there was nothing wrong with the food. It was not as flavorful as I would’ve expected from a Mexican Cajun place. The one in Waco had a hour wait on a Saturday after lunch I would not wait more than 15 minutes to eat food here. My son said the best thing about the food was the raw oysters. Me and my wife and my son all had their specialties and they’re just wasn’t anything special. The shrimp and grits were nothing like the ones that I had in New Orleans. My wife’s blackened tilapia was nothing special and my son‘s blackened Ahi tuna, he said, wasn’t that great I will have to say the gator bite was really good. The drink they do have live music that wasn’t obnoxiously loud even though we were set right in front of a speaker. I would definitely go back to try their poor boys and fried baskets but definitely I wouldn’t wait very long to be seated.

The presentation on the food was really good

A selection of Mexican food, seafood, and Cajun! Portions are large and very fresh. Amazing gumbo! Large selection of menu choices.
Our waitress, Brie, was amazing too!

This was a good find. Beautiful restaurant. The fried shrimp and fried oysters and pretty standard. No special breading or flavor. The boudin balls are really a good. The 20 ounce Don Julio resposado margarita was excellent. Loved the bread pudding. The sopapilla cheese cake was okay.

Normally this place is good but tonight was terrible! We sat at the middle of the bar and the server/bartender was very inattentive with our drink glasses empty 15 minutes or more each time. Our food took forever to come out and was barely warm when it did. The seafood gumbo was basically beef broth with a tiny bit of hard crunchy rice and 4 tiny shrimp. The crackers that came with it were crushed in the package to cracker dust. The shrimp and grits came out like soup with little flavor and tough chewy shrimp with soggy wet toasted bread. Both entrees as I said were barely warm. We had to ask the man who occasionally went behind the bar for refills. The server who was supposed to be there had a nasty attitude when we asked for refills stating,”I’M DOING 3 JOBS!!!” I WAS intending to get the grilled oysters until I saw the grill was filthy and covered with rust. There were cleaning supplies and dirty cleaning water all over the food prep area and the employee washing the wall behind the grill WHILE cooking food(the grill was pulled slightly from the wall) all the while, these cleaners and dirty water splashing all over the food.

While traveling to Athens on business, asked about a god place to eat lunch. This was a great recommendation.
Food was great and unique, real alligator bites. Po boys was great, bread made it even better, shrimp nachos was huge and had a really good cheese sauce.
We are a hour and a half away but we will drive back to eat there again!!!

I’m a Louisiana girl that lives in Texas so take this review for all that it is as I’m a critical of Louisiana food. Let me start with the delicious margaritas (that tasted every bit like a New Orleans daiquiri) I had strawberry and pineapple mixed and my husband had sex on the beach- they were both 10 out of 10. So I tried the chicken and sausage gumbo and while it wasn’t from a Creole kitchen it was the best restaurant gumbo I’ve ever had, tasty. We had the bowl appetizer thingy, pistollettes , fried shrimp poboy and red fish ponchatrain – everything was great. The sauces were tasty and didn’t taste artificial. Omg o can’t forget about the bread! Made me feel like I was home- soft on the outside and crunchy on the outside as it should be! Bar staff was friendly and knowledgeable and our wait staff as well. We were pleasantly surprised at how quickly the food came out cause the place was packed. We will be back and it’s an hour drive for us.

A lively & well decorated new restaurant in Athens. I’ve tried several different items & they’re good, but not great. The frozen drink options look great.
