At Thompson Italian, expect fresh pasta, hand-spun gelato, craft cocktails, and inventive seasonal dishes. We designed our restaurant to be a casual spot where anyone can stop in for a bowl of pasta, a dessert, or a glass of wine without fuss and pretense. We’ll make sure you can find great food and a fun night out with the family in one place, so bring the kids!

We had an exceptional evening dining here with friends. This was our first experience and won’t be our last. The service is top notch, the food is fresh and delicious topped with the perfect ambiance! The Brussel sprouts and Branzino was EXCELLENT!!! We tried every dessert and all phenomenal!

5/5 for food, dropped a star because the prices here are unreasonable for the portion sizes. $4 for a mini coke can. $27 for 6 cappelletti. $15 for a mason jar tiramisu. The service was great. The decor is beautiful, we came for a birthday but would also be great for a date. I personally didn’t have a drink but they looked amazing. Unfortunately drinks were $16-$18 a piece. We really enjoyed the appetizers: lamb meatballs, arancini, and garlic bread. Their focaccia was delicious as well. Overall, I loved everything that I had, very flavorful and would highly recommend for food quality. I couldn’t give it a full 5 star rating though because of the food quantity and prices. Especially considering there are other great Italian places in Downtown.

I know this must come as a shock to many but our food was ok at best. I had the cauliflower salad which was very bland, my husband had a pasta that the chef was kind enough to use basic butter marinara for because all others had alcohol ( ♀️ ♀️), but this was super salty and lacked any flavor and especially since we were charged the same price as the regular pasta … I go my 21mnth old thebutter pasta which for some reason given that it was for a child and from the kids menu was not cut up and were very long pasta strings … and he this, the $12 portion was the same portion as the $20something and better tasting I must say … all in all, I feel our dinner was made in a super hurry because our order was basic and the team wanted to focus on more pricey options ♀️ ♀️. But we didn’t have a choice, everything either had meat or wine (and we can’t eat either).
While leaving, I was bundling my son up as it was cold outside and to anyone who has kids or been around them knows that kids hate being bundled up- so anyways the lady next to us turns and keep staring while my son was fussing. I ask if I can help her and to my utter shock she says and I quote “I was just wondering if he is going to keep crying the whole time” … I was beyond shocked. The waited heard and ignored and asked us for dessert and I said and I quote “ is this not a child friendly restaurant. Cos this lady thinks it isn’t. And that’s why we can’t sit and use dessert now cos my son’s crying is bothering her ” and he just walked away. I called the manager and although she was apologetic and sympathetic, I honestly expected the manager to be more assertive. Her response was “we are a family friendly restaurant and we have a kids menu” ♀️ ♀️ . What about , let me address that with the customer, let me offer to seat you guys somewhere else so you can finish your meal or dessert etc (she didn’t know we were done) nothing… but anyways, i recorded the whole incident so that would interesting.

Thompson Italian always delivers. Food is always fresh, properly cooked, hot, and presented beautifully.
We have been there during all seasonal menus. Pasta is always cooked perfectly.
Olive oil cake is divine.
Will miss this place when we move!

Thomson Italian is a delightful find for anyone seeking genuine Italian flavors. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with a menu full of traditional favorites. We did appetizers and they were delicious, my favorite was stracciatella. The lasagna and roasted chicken are particularly noteworthy, bursting with taste. The staff is courteous and efficient, enhancing the overall experience. We love the dessert menu and we ordered all of them, the are no words to describe how delicious they were. Definitely a top choice for a satisfying Italian meal!

We already LOVE Thompson’s in Falls Church but had to try their new location in Old Town. We joined them for one of their monthly wine dinners and they never disappoint.
We were able bring family friends along, and they had a lovely time. All-in-all, a great location to share great food with friends and family.

Overall a fabulous experience. The restaurant is very attentive and timely with your service. Was a group of 3 of us, all got pasta dishes, the squid ink pasta, rigatoni and the braised pork pasta dish. Overall was very good. Ordered a cocktail called The Notorious F.I.G. Incredibly strong drink and very pungent with the smell but in a good way. Sweet and strong drink. We had the Pumpkin Tiramisu to finish and that was the perfect dessert to finish the meal with.

I usually come in for happy hours, and I randomly found out they do lasagna Tuesdays one night. The lasagna is great! And their regular pasta and drinks are fantastic as always.
Edit: Dropping a star because they serve coke in a glass poured from a 6oz can. The server then checks up on you with “would you like more?” making you think there’s free refill. But nope, they charge you twice. I ended up paying $8 for 12oz of diet coke.

Food flavor was the bare minimum. Portion was small definitely not worth $30. The complimentary bread was very nice and soft, the Brussels sprouts were well made. The mushroom pasta SAUCE was good but the serving size was super small (8 shells). The server barely came around and we when he did had to ask for missing items more than once.

As an Italian, I can say the food was okay, nothing more: small portions, decent taste, and overpriced for what it was. Our visit overall was just average in terms of food and ambiance, but the way we were rushed out completely ruined the experience. We were told to leave because “someone was waiting for the table,” even though the restaurant had several empty tables. We stepped outside and continued our conversation, and not a single person walked in to take the table we were supposedly holding up.
If you want to call yourself an Italian restaurant, you should honor the culture you’re representing. In Italy, we take pride in giving guests the best possible experience: never pushing them out while they’re still enjoying their evening, especially when there is clearly no one waiting. This was disappointing and far from the hospitality we expected, particularly because the table wasn’t needed at all.
Never again. And honestly, after this experience, it became very clear why the restaurant was so empty on a Thursday evening.
