The Yard is a restaurant serving elevated comfort food, inspired by the African diaspora, including the American South, the Caribbean, and Coastal Africa. It is meant to be a welcoming space for Good Folks to convene and build on Good Ideas, to move the culture FORWARD. We are situated in the heart of the city, inside Military Park, the hub of the Downtown neighborhood amidst and with access to all of the major attractions and venues. From the moment we were greeted with “Are you folks gonna hangout with us?” I knew the Yard would be a good choice. There’s a good range of dishes all reasonably priced. Service was prompt and friendly. We both went for hot dogs which didn’t disappoint. I also had the sweet potato tots which came with a wicked dipping sauce. The cream soda was definitely “a blast from the past” I haven’t tried that in years. Make sure you leave room to try the grilled Pound Cake it’s amazing. You must try the Yard it won’t disappoint

Highly recommend this place 100%. The staff here was on top of their service, especially right after a show at the NJPAC theater. Small dining room, but made up for the very nice servers and attentive care they put on their customers. Food was fantastic, sauces are DELISH! Burgers are amazing. Cauliflower tots just as amazing. Very transparent on what they have to offer.

Amazing first experience at the yard. Came here with some coworkers for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem. Staff were super friendly and helpful when placing our orders. Also, they would always come check on us and made sure our drinks were always filled. Superb service!
I ordered the seoul sista fried rice. Beautifully plated with a flower in the bowl. The fried rice was made with kimchi that wasn’t overly spicy and a large fried egg on top. The Yaya sauce was creamy and paired well with everything. Overall, loved the dish!
My coworkers ordered the oxtail sandwich, the walla chicken and the chopped thigh wrap. Everyone loved their dishes and want to come back to try the other dishes.
Lastly, we ordered the grilled coconut cake. This is definately a MUST try! First time having a grilled cake and I can say I’ve been missing out!

Wife and I came to NJ PAC to see Yo Yo Ma perform and decided to eat here before the concert. I think the Yard may have out performed the concert.
Will definitely come down here just to eat here again.

Had the Fish Fillayyyy with cut-fries, very very tasty. The fish filet sandwich was great and also, that Walla Sauce I was dunking the cut-fries into was SUPER tasty.
The staff service was excellent. Very attentive and friendly.
Ended up ordering “The Breast” to go and had every intention of having it for dinner but… it’s just too damn tasty. Eating it now. 5/5 stars. nom nom nom

the warm welcome from the ultra friendly staff set the atmosphere for a meal filled with layers of flavor, spice and the right touch of heat. get the walla sauce and put it on EVERYTHING you will not regret it. save room for the coconut cake, slightly grilled , warm with a moist crumb *chef’s kiss* this is a meal I will say dream about for a long while. can’t wait to come back to Newark, thanks to the yard <3

If you’re seeing a show at the NJ Performing Arts Center and are looking for a bite, this is the place. Even if you aren’t seeing a show and are nearby, this is the place.
I grabbed their chicken sausage roll before a show. It was so good I had to come back again after—to my memory I don’t think I’ve ever done the same restaurant twice in a day. Their fried chicken sandwich was one of the best I’ve had in recent memory (photo included), and they’ve got *sweet potato tots*—nuff said.

I heartily suggest this location. Particularly following a performance at the NJPAC theater, the staff here provided excellent service. The tiny eating area was compensated for by the excellent service and careful attention to their patrons. The food was excellent, the sauces are delicious, and the burgers are outstanding. Cauliflower tots are equally delicious. quite open about what they have to offer.
I enjoy being able to support Black-owned businesses as well.
