Stopped by here for breakfast yesterday at about 9:20. No line, and just one other party in the restaurant at the famous MLK booth where the March on Washington was planned. There were two people working, and keeping quite busy. I waited about five minutes to order at the register. I didn’t wait long for the coffee and food to arrive though, maybe ten minutes? The food was all very good. Biscuits are made fresh in house. However with tip I was just over $20, which seemed a bit steep. I was mostly coming to say I’d been there, so guess that works out. Once done my place was cleared quickly, too. Free refills were also offered on the coffee. I’d recommend this place, and would definitely consider coming back when in the area!

Absolutely wonderful place. The food was excellent, prices surprisingly cheap for the quality and quantity of food. Everything was well cooked and seasoned. I normally dont order home fries because at most places they are a soggy bland mess, but here they were absolutely delicious. I got the fried pork chops and they were delicious.

Wholly recommend this place.

A true DC Classic!— one of those places that just feels like home. The new ownership has done an amazing job keeping the soul of the Grill alive while refreshing things in all the right ways. The new and improved menu is a perfect balance of classic comfort food and fresh updates — every dish is full of flavor and made with care.

It’s great to see this historic spot thriving and continuing to represent the heart of the city.

Went in and was greeted by a beautiful sister and to top it off, her hospitality was great. Everyone was very kind and happy to serve me and the other customers inside. The food? 10/10, fried catfish, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and a store brewed batch of sweet tea. Amazing, please support them

First time coming here and it felt so much like a family restaurant. Food was great! Loved the pancakes. Everything was good overall. The only complaint is the wait time. We waited over an hour just to get are food. We Came on a saturday so it might be because of that. Other than that no complaints!

I’ve been coming here for years and the service has always been questionable, but on this occasion the menu did not reflect accurate pricing or combo options. In addition to no having correct menu options on ALL THE MENUS IN THE RESTAURANT, the staff was unable and unwilling to honor the pricing reflected on the menu.

It’s unprofessional and unfortunate. They claim to be the oldest soul food restaurant in the country, and the menus are clearly printed on someone’s personal printer at home – but they decide to pass out inaccurate menus.

To add insult to injury – they know people come here for breakfast/brunch on the weekends and the host was at the door telling people that they’d have to wait at least 45 minutes for food in a restaurant with 7 patrons in it because they only scheduled one person to cook.

This will be the last time I spend money at this establishment. I did love bringing people from out of town here, but the unprofessional nature of the staff and the restaurant in general has moved Florida Ave grill to the list of places to avoid.

This is a very very sad review.
such an iconic spot and if only i am rich i would have bought the place with the same crew and recipe.

It was our first time here, it was the very first place we visited when we arrived in DC after we found out that this was the first soul food restaurant in the US

Anyway, it was many red flags already the moment we stepped in,

1st red flag the place looked so dead and no people outside, very very empty for an iconic place, we only saw 2 people i

2nd red flag , When we entered we were immediately informed that the prices on the menu is not the current price (which is strange, bec why cant they just print out a menu with current price?…. But bec its an iconic place, we disregard this red flag)

3rd red flag, the owner had changed and that its jamaican and soul food ( not exactly what we were expecting)

Now lets get down to the food.

We ordered chicken wings with 2 sides and jerk chicken with 2 side.

The chicken wings were good, 3 little pieces with 2 sides is not worth the price, we were charged 45 for 2 plates and this is a total rip off. 3/5

Jerk chicken and rice and peas omg!!!!! It tasted like the chicken was swimming in salt. Its 0/5
Another total rip off

Our total was $45 for 2 plates (so 22/plate) Total rip off, with flavor and portion, the 3 little chicken wings was the only good one that we had, so definitely order that.

Its just very sad that the original owner and cooks are not the same anymore. We were extremely disappointed, we wanted to try the very 1st soul food restaurant in the US.

My dinner here had more flair than I expected! Tasty fried chicken and huge perfect plaintains. The stir-fried cabbage could have been spicier but it was a clever recipe. Overall this chef is going places and I believe this restaurant can make it another 80 years. Our meals took some time so don’t be in a rush. Glad I went and I will be back sometime to check out their breakfast.

What I love about this small, intimate restaurant is the incredible service and the comfort of the food. I ordered the grilled salmon with grits and eggs—even though I don’t eat eggs (my husband does), every bite was still memorable. What made the experience even more special was learning that the booth we sat in was where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once sat while organizing his marches.

The servers were absolutely phenomenal. When I mentioned that I prefer my salmon well-done and more heavily grilled, they immediately brought me an extra piece—no hesitation, no questions, no attitude. That level of care and attentiveness truly stood out. The service here is nothing short of exceptional.
