First time here. We were staying at the American Club for the weekend, and eating at the Wisconsin Room was a must on our list.

Food:
The menu offers a nice selection of starters, à la carte options, and full dinners. The ability to add a wide assortment of sides is a great way to customize a meal to fit your tastes. We started with a couple of specialty cocktails, the Whistle Stop Old Fashioned and the Hemingway Daiquiri. Both were nicely made and delicious.

We do not normally order bread service, but my wife was famished, so we started with the House Special Duck Fat Parker Rolls. Wow. They were amazing. The crust was dark, crunchy, and full of flavor. They came with honey butter and a bacon jam spread. Next time I might try the Steakhouse Brisket Burger and substitute these rolls for the bun.

For our meals, we ordered the Salmon à la carte with a Caesar salad and the Wagyu Short Rib dinner. The salad was nicely made with a light and flavorful dressing and good presentation. The salmon was excellent. It was melt in your mouth tender with a beautiful pan sear, which is a perfect combination.

The Wagyu Short Rib was a different experience. This was my first time having this “Denver” cut of short rib. I was expecting a very luxurious, rich texture, but instead it was fairly lean and a bit dry. The outside was nicely charred and had a slightly ashen flavor, which was not unpleasant, just unexpected. On its own, the meat was a disappointment. Paired with the risotto and bordelaise, it improved considerably. Still, it is not something I would likely order again.

We took our leftovers home and still had room for dessert, so we shared the Banana Bread Pudding. It was delicious, though the texture was more muffin-like than the dense, creamy style we usually prefer. The rum raisin ice cream was a very nice addition.

Service:
Like the rest of the service at the American Club, it was very good. The entire evening felt relaxed and well paced. Water and drinks were always attended to, and our server was knowledgeable about the menu and helpful when explaining items.

My only small issue was the tone of the service. It was extremely upbeat, almost to the point of feeling a bit scripted or performative. I love enthusiastic and friendly service, but at times it did not feel entirely authentic. This is a minor criticism in what was otherwise a very good experience.

Atmosphere:
Like the rest of the hotel, the Wisconsin Room is full of character and charm. There is a strong sense of history in the space, especially knowing it was once the cafeteria for early immigrant workers. That adds a humbling and meaningful layer to the experience. The room was still decorated for the holidays, with tasteful greenery and ornaments.

We would definitely come back for another meal.

We were sadly very disappointed with our dinner here. We ordered the 32oz porterhouse medium rare and it came out incredibly rare. The vegetable sides were dry and lacking any flavor. My cocktail was good but lacked presentation. Overall, the food was all incredibly underwhelming and not aligned with their personally acclaimed standards.

I will say all of the staff were amazing! Service was great and the atmosphere is very quaint; fabulous decorations for the holidays.

We were here last night to celebrate my birthday. Our server Mary was very sweet and helped us to be at ease. Since we are vegetarian, she recommended us a few options. Veggie Skewers and wilrice were good but a little bland for us but overall good. , we ordered Chocolate cake which was out of the world.

Unfortunately this was not a great experience. Let me start by saying, our waitress was wonderful and the rest of the staff was attentive as well. The food was completely underwhelming, including tuna tartar served with potato chips, French onion soup served without bread or cheese baked inside, side of corn that tasted from a can, potato wedges that were not cooked fresh, and a bone in ribeye that was the toughest piece of steak my husband and I have ever eaten. I really wish I had better things to say, but for $300+ we most definitely felt underwhelmed.

Dinner at the Wisconsin Room, tucked inside the historic American Club, was exceptional from the first moment to the last.

Overall experience

The evening began with a genuine welcome. Not rehearsed. Not stiff. The staff set a calm, confident tone that carried through the entire meal. Service felt polished without ever feeling formal. Every interaction was thoughtful and timely.

The people

Michelle, the sommelier, elevated the night in a quiet, confident way. Her wine selections were precise and generous in spirit. Each pairing made sense. Every glass supported the food and the moment.

Our server, Hannah, was a standout. Kind. Attentive. Easy to talk with. She read the table perfectly. Present when needed. Invisible when conversation mattered.

Food and drink

We started with the tuna tartare. Clean. Bright. Balanced. A perfect opening bite that set expectations high and met them.

My wife chose the lamb. It was beautifully prepared and deeply satisfying. Rich without being heavy.

I ordered the wagyu short rib with risotto. It was outstanding. Tender, layered, and thoughtfully composed. The risotto was creamy and restrained, supporting the beef rather than competing with it.

From the first bite to the last sip, the food and wine worked together seamlessly. Nothing missed. Nothing rushed.

Atmosphere

The Wisconsin Room is warm and inviting. Comfortable. Confident. It avoids the trap of being stuffy or overly bold. This is not a celebrity chef showcase. It feels curated, intentional, and grounded. The menu pairings are smart and personal, not performative.

The personal touch

What stood out most was how the staff made us feel. Like family. Cared for without hovering. Every detail handled. Every need anticipated. We were free to enjoy the food, the wine, and each other.

Conclusion

We will be back. With family. Without hesitation.
The Wisconsin Room delivers a true five-star dining experience. Exceptional food. Exceptional service. A memorable evening done right.

Excellent meal. Mary was wonderful- warm and very knowledgeable. We especially loved the Hamachi crudo (with the caviar) and the Wisconsin Burrata but everything was delicious. Fantastic cocktails. All the fun of a super club with throughly modern and refined cuisine. So happy we were able to dine here.

Everything you would expect from such a professional, clean, fine dining room experience. The staff was both professional and friendly. We asked many questions, and our server fielded everything she could and deferred to the chef for those she couldn’t and returned with a quick, informed response.

The food was pretty good and the ambience is really special. The burger was almost $30 which was good but overpriced. Highly recommend the brussels sprouts.

We ate here as part of our getaway package. My wife and I both ordered the strip steak, I got the fingerling potatoes and she got the brussel sprouts. The steak was ok, nothing special especially for the price. The fingerling potatoes were excellent though. Drinks were ok, my wife liked her Bold Old Fashioned and I had the Wisconsin Apple Pie which was good but not worth the price. All in all it was decent but I don’t think I would go back.

I rarely write negative reviews, but this was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. We ordered the tuna appetizer, ribeye, mashed potatoes, cocktails, and a Sauvignon Blanc. The tuna tasted so off that I actually told my husband I thought we might get sick from eating it, it tasted old. The ribeye was extremely disappointing and honestly one of the worst steaks I’ve ever had. Even the wine was poor, which is surprising given the setting.

If you’re staying in Kohler and want a truly great meal, skip this spot and head to Blackwolf Run instead. The food there is significantly better.
