The Whole Enchilada is a casual spot for fresh, delicious Mexican food. The service is quick and friendly. After ordering at the counter, you can take a seat in the dining room. I found it to be comfortable and nicely decorated. Everything about this place is clean and welcoming.
Now for the food… The fish tacos are perfect! The fish is seasoned and prepared beautifully, the slaw is crisp and fresh, the amount of avocado is generous, and the sauce is so smokey and flavorful. Yum!!! The guacamole is also a hit, and I heard the empanadas are an 8/10. I’d love to come back!

No frills Mexican food in Durham. They have the basics: tacos, burritos, and enchiladas. They are decent, but what sets this place apart is that they specialize in healthful ingredients, like spinach and other vegetables. I had spinach soft tacos, which were quite satisfying, but I wish they came with beans in addition to rice. Overall it provided what we needed, which was a satisfying meal on short notice where we could meet with family and have a nice conversation.

The one time I went here was on Friday night (it’s been about 2 years now) and I ordered the Taco Taco Chips and Soda/Water (I was told all the drinks are the same price, so it doesn’t matter).
I figure $6.50 plus tax, it should come to $6.91, but somehow it came to a little over $7.00 (I don’t recall the exact amount). Then I agreed to pay for my buddy’s drink (that is all he got/ordered) and the price went up to $9.70. I gave the kid a $20 and received $10.30 back as change.
When my friend grabbed the two drinks, the kid behind the counter acted shocked and said he didn’t charge me for the second drink, but then when I argued his false statement, he told us not to worry about it…
I guess I am worried about it.
I’m confused on how the special with an extra drink came to that much and then he wanted more money…
I suspect shenanigans, but not my problem.
As for the food, the tacos were good, but a lot of grease/oil poured out of it when I went to eat it. I almost ended up wearing it, but managed to dodge it. It would have been better/healthier if it was strained a little bit. The chips were salty, but not bad. The water was in a bottle and was cold enough/drinkable.
I will consider possibly going here again in the future, but will certainly watch the pricing and get a receipt next time.
I liked the Westbrook location better.
This location has potential, but is not there yet – Just my humble opinion…

Will charge you for things but not give it to you. Be sure to check your order before you leave. Make sure you get the hottest sauce they have if you want your food to have flavor, otherwise it tastes like shoes.

Went in to get a couple tacos and a whole Enchilada. The biggest mistake a Mexican restaurant can make is not offer ala carte items because they want to gouge their customers and shove rice and beans down their throat. They wouldn’t let me order 2 tacos and 1 Enchilada. They actually said no, you can’t order that, I said ok, bye.

On a rainy Saturday night desperate for something to eat I stopped at the Whole Enchilada, a place I pass by regularly but never tried. To me Mexican food is comfort food and nothing warms you up like a warm burrito and some homemade hot sauce. I regret not stopping in here sooner. The staff is super friendly, the food was fresh and delicious. The prices can’t be beat! They have daily burritos specials and offer a full menu of delicious arepas, enchiladas, tacos and more. Here you can get a healthy filling meal, made with real foods cheaper than a McDonalds. If you’re in the Durham area looking for a quick delicious bite support local business and stop by The Whole Enchilada.

Roasted Vegetable burrito was fantastic. Healthy options which I usually have to go to New Haven for. They don’t appear to offer combination plates (taco plate and enchila plate are seperate meals) The rice and beans are exactly as expected and all more enjoyable than Jalapeno Heaven. If you like soy cheese they offer it. I’m not sure which brand but you can call them. They are very nice. My burrito was assembled perfectly with the foil and everything it stayed together until the last bite like a food truck burrito. Sometimes at other restaurants vegetarian and vegan options add up to a soggy mess…this roasted vegetable burrito at the whole enchilada was actually a real meal and it didn’t soak through the wrap or the foil at all.
Get both the red and the green sauce or have them put some in your burrito!! Years ago we tried the location in Guilford and I don’t think we got the sauces, didn’t realize that unless noted most dishes are fairly mild unless customized with seasoned meat options any of their great sauces.
Next time I would get extra pico and lettuce and get both of their hot sauces in there. It was so good that I used 3 itty bitty salsa cups myself. I didn’t see what brand or if they make both but the green hot sauce tasted fresh and the red sauce tasted like Tapatio or Choula type hot sauce.
People who can’t eat spicy food would be able to get a mild yet flavorful and filling meal here
Thanks for making dinner! We ate it so fast we didn’t have time to take a picture. $30 for two people was awesome compared to some other options we were considering. Will be back!!
