Honestly, this place is fantastic. I didn’t know what to expect when I decided to come here, but it’s blown any thoughts I had out of the water! I love the atmosphere, the staff are super friendly and helpful, and the food is amazing! The prices are surprisingly low for how good it is. I got the special, which was a half rack of ribs, Mac n cheese, and fries. It was only $20, so I wasn’t expecting a lot. It was a great sized half rack and fantastic taste. Fell right off the bones. Fries were well seasoned, Mac n cheese was super creamy. I couldn’t ask for better. The wait staff was very friendly, and took care of everything. I’d definitely come back.

I got the corner dip and the chicken burger, the chicken burger was okay, well cooked and plenty of chicken, but that corn dip was a mouth-gasm in every bite. Creamy, cheesy delicious. I would recommend it to everyone to comes here

There are very few places that are absolutely exemplary in all aspects. Most restaurants have great food OR great service OR a great atmosphere. The Wellhead nails it fantastically. The food was fantastic, as was the desserts. The server was attentive, knowledgable, and kept the drinks full. The atmosphere was perfect. Hands down the best restaurant in Artesia.

Back in Artesia, New Mexico—the land of little to do and nowhere to do it. I just got off a long shift at the plant that drained the life from my bones, so I figured I’d take what little soul I had left and try The Wellhead—the town’s answer to, “Where can I eat that isn’t wrapped in foil and bad decisions?”

I came in craving a steak. I mean full cowboy fantasy: boots up, medium-rare, ready to tip my hat to the cook. But $34 for a 12oz steak? And the only other option is an 8oz sirloin for $28? That is steakhouse pricing in pub—that’s hostage negotiation 101, they know the nearest steakhouseis an hour in either direction. I don’t know if it’s good or not, but I wasn’t gambling my Texas pride on a maybe. Not today New Mexico, not this Texas boy.

Instead, I kicked things off with the fried green chiles and ranch, and holy hell, Artesia! You did something right. They were crispy, flavorful, not too spicy—like pepper poppers that went to finishing school. More places need to get on board with these bad boys.

Main course: Country fried steak, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, and their so-called beer bread. First impression? It looked like something fished out of a school lunch tray. But then I took a bite—and boom! Redemption. Steak was flavorful, breading had that Texas crunch, and the pepper gravy was rich enough to buy me dinner first. Wish the steak was a little thicker (that’s what she said), but still good enough I’d tell the boys at work to check it out.

The mashed potatoes? Creamy, with a few chunky bits for that homemade touch. The mac and cheese was ooey-gooey good—just don’t let it cool down or it starts acting like cold glue stick. And that beer bread? Meh. Tasted like a buzzed crouton. Gimme a warm beer-battered roll and now we’re talkin’.

I washed it all down with the Crude Oil Stout—a bold, dark, full-bodied brew that drank smooth and finished clean. Not quite Mississippi Mud, but enough to rock me gently into a food coma.

Sweet tea? Serviceable. Nothing to write home about, but good enough for a to-go refill on the way out.

Service was snappy, staff was friendly, and even though I walked in steakless, I left satisfied.

All in all: 4.5 stars. Half a star off for a pricey steak I couldn’t commit to and a menu that could use a little expanding. But will I be back? Hell yes. In a town filled with fast food, overpriced tacos, and swirling dust devils, The Wellhead is a desert rose.

Lovely little downtown bar vibe and good looking food and beer.

Unfortunately, their patio is closed for some reason (despite it being an unseasonably beautiful December day), and I can confirm the other review from a few years ago that they couldn’t accommodate us with a small dog.

The staff were friendly and recommended Adobe Rose and a few other establishments in town with patios, but it’s a shame the Wellhead doesn’t (or can’t?) open their seemingly nice covered and furnished patio for travelers with dogs.

Good Fish on the fish and chips. Sweet potato fries good. Coleslaw leaves quite a bit to be desired. Large chunks of cabbage instead of shredded small enough to eat. Basic Mayo on the slaw.

Excellent food! We’re new to the area and it’s been recommended by several people. It seems to be harder and harder to find good food that’s worth going out for these days but this place did not disappoint. Very delicious and quality food! Nice and helpful staff too.

We were so impressed with this place! We were seated right away, the service was great, and the food was amazing! The menu has some really unique items on it, like elk bratwurst. The kids “bitty” burgers are quite large – like regular burgers. The atmosphere is nice. Next time we stop in Artesia, I’ll definitely want to go here again.

I’m 71. The bartender asked to see my age identification. I told him I’m 71. He told me “they’re really strict on I.D’s around here”, meaning the cops. Before I tipped, I asked if it was a state law and he told me “yes, everybody MUST show I.D. before he can serve them alcohol.” So I tipped and told him I wouldn’t have if it wasn’t a state LAW! Well, I looked up the law and what he said is untrue. His coworker had his back all the way and she also lied saying it was ATF law. 71, bald headed, gray bearded old man, over 3 times the legal requirement showing credentials to snowflake power mongering liars is not the way to run a business. IMO. Now I wish I could take my tip back. Oh, well. Also, I had three beers and none were filled to the top. smh.
