Jerk Chicken was flavorful and mildly spicy. It was cooked well and the rice balanced out the spice. I would rate this 9/10! The fried plantains were one of the best plantains I’ve ever had, I love how it’s not soggy and it has a crisp to it.
Oxtail tasted delicious, it wasn’t as “fall off the bone” as I wish it was. The flavor was there and it was well seasoned. The sauce was paired well with the cabbage and rice! I would give it a 7.5/10.
The Side of Mac and Cheese was my favorite. It was delicious and the broiled cheese on top added the perfect texture in every bite. 10/10.
Service was good, the waiter was friendly and welcoming! There are lots of parking and seating.
Preface: I’ve been to Jamaica 20 times now and I have travelled all over the island so I have had my fair share of Jamaican food. I was also taught to make jerk, by a Jamaican, over a period of several months and it’s always a big hit when I make it! Not to mention, I travel all over New England for my job, and I regularly sample food from the different areas I’m in, especially Jamaican food so I have had dishes from many Caribbean places in the area.
This past weekend I was headed to IKEA in Stoughton and The Well is only 8 minutes from there so, I was excited to indulge in some island flavors again! The first time I tried The Well, I was working in the area and I ordered a couple of take out dishes. I almost always order at least two items when I’m trying a place for the first time as I want to give them a fair shake. I had the Jerk Pork and Jerk Chicken and it was absolutely delicious. The best I’ve had outside of Jamaica and better than some there as well. Too many places around here just dump some Grace or Eaton’s out of a jar, on to some chicken and call it a day. Jerk is like BBQ, everyone should have their own unique flair to it and The Well does not disappoint!
For my second time, it was take out again. I was hoping to dine in with my wife as this place is not like most Jamaican restaurants. They’re usually small, take out spots with no bar, not the case here. It’s a large establishment with lots of seating, a full bar and also a take out counter off to the side. Wifey wasn’t up for the adventure this day though so styrofoam it was
I am a huge fan of jerk chicken and even more so, jerk pork, when you can find it. (Give me some jerk rabbit and I’m in heaven ) Oxtail is good, my wife loves it and curry goat is pretty bomb as well but it’s hard for me to pass on jerk, especially when it’s as good as it is here! So, this time I ordered 2! Jerk Chicken meals with Rice & Peas and 2! Jerk Pork meals with Gungo Peas & Rice. I was getting my jerk fix I also ordered an order of the Curry Crab to change it up and try another dish.
The curry crab was at least a half a crab worth of legs and some-body. It was seasoned really well, right through to the meat inside. The shell was softer than I expected so I had to more tear it open rather than use shell crackers but that was only because it was marinated, I believe. Either way, it was awesome, tons of flavor!! The JP and JC are done similarly but the Pork is a bit saucier I think, maybe it was just my portions. Either way, the Chicken was super juicy and the skin was incredibly full of flavor. Their seasoning is not overly salty and I’m a marinade guy over dry rub (though I like both) so ✅ from me. The Pork portions were also as good as it gets! All of the rices were also perfection, tender and moist and great for sauce sucking. The best function of rice IMO!!
In conclusion, needless to say, I highly recommend this spot. If you’ve never had Jamaican food or jerk before, this would be a great introduction. If you’re a seasoned (see what I did there) pro, you won’t be disappointed. Round 3 I promise we’ll try some other dishes and update you all
2nd review-Eating in for first time: the food is amazing. I had jerk wings, plantains and a side of cabbage. Also we ordered, rice and peas, cabbage, plantains and stew chicken. Everything was DELICIOUS AND SPOT ON. I enjoyed the meal. My favorite is the jerk patties which is always sold out but the wings are the right consistency of jerk, so I’m satisfied right now.
“I have no idea what the song is. Can I help you?” The lady said.
“I have a too good to go order.” I said, showing her on the app.
“Let me see it again.” She said.
I put it in front of her.
“Tap and swipe for me.” She said.
I did.
She handed me a bag.
It was all very curt.
I took the bag, no silverware, and sat down to eat.
As I opened the container I heard her from across the counter: “you can’t sit there!”
I told her I was just going to eat my dinner.
“You can’t sit there.” She said.
Where can I sit, then?” I asked, at this point I’m getting annoyed because I came in with a great impression of this place, from the mission statement to the uplifting worship music, but this woman…very curt the entire time, and now I buy food form this place and she’s telling me I can’t eat it here?!
“Under the TV” she says, motioning for me to move.
I moved but at that point I had lost my appetite. I left and gave the meal to someone else.
Really strange how someone can single handedly destroy a positive mood and impression in the span of like 5 min, but she did it.
Again, food was great. I didn’t eat it but the bite I had was good. But unless they have better service, the worship music and friendly posters mean little. Kindness and love require action, not just words.
Mediocre and forgettable dine in experience. The hostess/waitress was polite, but appeared exhausted and internally counting down the minutes until the end of her shift. As a result, we ordered all items at once (to include a to go), and didn’t ask for any refills or ordered additional drinks.
The atmosphere felt more like eating in a cafeteria vs a traditional dine in restaurant.
THE FOOD:
The Callaloo fritters were prepared well and paired nicely with the dipping sauce. Flavors were well balanced, and they achieved the perfect texture without being greasy.
The beef patty was seasoned well and cooked to perfection.
The oxtail dinner fell short of expectations. Although meaty, there was inconsistency with the level of doneness wherein a few firm pieces required more cook time. Additionally, the meat and sauce was under-seasoned. The rice and peas were very good and the standout bite on the plate. The sweet plantains were cooked as expected and tasted traditional.
The jerk pork was phenomenal- compliments to the chef. The meat had great depth of flavor, was tender, and had a pleasant smoky back note.
THE VALUE:
Prices align with current industry standards. The quantity and quality of food is satisfactory. The food absolutely compensated for the lackluster dining experience.
