Reviews
“Babe Ruth drank here
before You were born.”
Just 5-plus years ago, The Walsh was an edgy dive bar with genuine heart and soul. A massive 3-year restoration of the entire ground floor (& part of the 2nd) was completed in 2022 by the previous owner. That privately-funded effort turned a one-bedroom apartment on the ground floor into today’s Banquet Hall, a bookable event space with a tinplate ceiling. Across the center hall, a new women’s bathroom was added where a former pool table once stood in the Tap Room, making that long rectangular barroom feel slightly more confining. Seasoned staff run the bar admirably & serve up innovative drink specials.
In 1920 after an exhibition baseball game at Veterans Park, a 25-year-old Babe Ruth famously tossed back a few in the Tap Room and lodged overnight in an upstairs room. Fittingly, on the Tap Room’s south wall there’s a large framed photo of the Bambino captioned with that classic quote from above.
Sadly, The Walsh’s young new owner gets a C- in History. There’s absolutely no need to gild the lily on the The Walsh’s true 1860s origins. The Clark House, Medina’s inaugural railroad hotel, was a modest-sized structure built on The Walsh’s same 525 West Ave site in 1862 (see ‘Medina Tribune Note’ below). Eugene Walsh later replaced it with the current 3-story Walsh Hotel, a lodging house at its 1904 opening with 38 rooms (Google: Walsh House Medina Historical Society). It’s unfortunate that on his business’s websites and emblazoned on the branded apparel he sells, the owner weirdly proclaims 1852 as The Walsh’s origin/built year. Further, this Medina newcomer bizarrely describes The Walsh as being the 3rd oldest tavern in NY State!
I’m sorry, but these meritless claims are unfounded flimflam pulled out of thin air. These are such strange fabrications to double down on for a proprietor so lucky and so blessed to own this timeworn institution richly steeped in true history already. The generations of stone quarrymen and people of faith who labored hard to build this village by the Erie Canal would surely be disheartened by these gaslighting antics.

NY Forward Details Note:
The $560,000 public transfer payment to the owner is not a loan, nor is it taxed as income. While this large cash gift comes directly from hardworking NY State taxpayers, all future apartment rental income will be for the owner’s sole financial benefit. The NY Forward grant program does require recipients to invest money upfront before NYS will fully reimburse following construction verification.
Award size perspective:
To net $560,000 of take home pay, a NYS taxpayer would have needed to earn approx. $918,000 of annual income before taxes. Assuming 40-hour work weeks over all 52 weeks of a year, $918,000 equals $441 per hour, or 29 times the $15 NYS minimum wage. A minimum wage worker would need to work for 19.8 years to earn $560,000 of take home pay. Per a Forbes online tax calculator, a NYS taxpayer earning $918,000 pays a Federal+State tax rate of 39%.
Income – [Taxes] = Take Home Pay
918,000 – [0.39 x 918,000] = 560,000
Medina Tribune Note:
A record of Aaron Clark’s hotel license is found in the July 11, 1861 Medina Tribune, pg 3, col 3 (Source: NYS Historic Newspapers). Clark completed construction of The Clark House in 1862 after obtaining this license in 1861. Clark operated his hotel for 20-plus years before selling it to Frank Sloat in 1884 per Historical Society records. While the railroad was built through Medina in 1852, passenger rail traffic grew slowly in those early years. No historical evidence exists to support earlier railroad-adjacent hotels having been built on the 525 West Ave site before 1862.
Across a center hallway hung with haunting railroad memorabilia lies the barren but bookable Banquet Hall. It’s a weirdly perfect venue for first-time weddings, reunions, life celebrations or primal therapy sessions for the Gen Z rat pack.
Quirky place for oddball company, buzzworthy food + a bookable event hall.
We had an incredible experience at The Walsh Hotel for our wedding! From start to finish, the staff was incredibly accommodating, allowing us ample time to set up and ensuring the room was perfectly secured. The bartender went above and beyond, even helping us create a custom cocktail for our special day, which was a huge hit with our guests.
The charm of the venue was exactly what we had hoped for and more. The room was beautifully remodeled, blending modern touches with classic elegance. It was everything I imagined for our wedding. Highly recommend The Walsh Hotel for anyone looking for a stunning and accommodating venue for their event!
