Love the atmosphere at this historic tavern. Inside has a very authentic feeling and the decore is wonderful, and can be an instant conversation starter for your group. The wait staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful. On this occasion we just stopped in for a few cocktails and sat outside, but hopefully we will be back soon for a meal.

My family has been coming to this place for over 25 years for the Friday all you can eat fish fry. My wife and I came in last night expecting to get that, only to learn (after we had finished our plate) that it was no longer all you can eat. $16 for a couple pieces of fish and a handful of fries is kind of ridiculous. The fish still tasted great, but for the price, we will definitely not be back.

My first visit to this well kept, old tavern and the people listened to me and answered all my questions and served me what I requested in a timely way so I could attend a personal event without missing a beat. Recommended that you go here

This place has a rich history and just a nice feel of homeyness. It’s really a big place. We went on a Monday and many of the shops were closed, so there were only a few people. The antique shop was closed. Regarding the food, it’s really nothing extra ordinary. I had a grilled chicken sandwich with coleslaw, and they mistakenly brought me fries. They were good. My friend had a burger and sweet potato fries. They also have live entertainment on weekends and I’m sure that draws a lot of people.

Found this gem while visiting the Chicago metro area. The food was amazing, the service was top notch, and I got to meet and talk with the new owners. There is a lot of passion for keeping this historic place going strong with classic food with portion sizes leaving you satisfied. Its worth a visit just to see the beautiful bar!

So confused about all these amazing reviews…. My burger was extremely bland, absolutely no flavor. Asked for medium and it was well done. Fries were good but portion size was small. Food was overall disappointing, as the burger was just really really bad. Service was just okay. Wait staff was attentive but spent so much time talking about random stuff, she couldn’t remember my order and had to clarify multiple times on what I ordered (my order was easy- a burger/fries). Ambience/vibe is lacking and looks outdated and a bit dingy. I think if the food was good, I wouldn’t really care about the decor or the service. But food was not good at all, so all this combined created an unpleasant dining experience. Not interested in going back.

Been a patron since before I was born (my mom) and have many family memories of the Friday fish fry. Took my mom for Fish fry and new owner gifted her a porcelain box memento. Great service, great food and being the oldest tavern in Illinois (1847) it’s well having a cold drink at the historic bar. Cheers

Established in 1847 and still amazing!!!!! The vibe in this place is something else. Feels like walking back in time. The furnitures, setups, decorations and from back in the days but looks amazingly beautiful.

This is the oldest restaurant in Illinois, opened by Germans settlers in 1847. It features the old brick fireplace and pubstyle bar called “Presidents bar” with many other antiques such as the grandfather clock and the bank teller’s cage. This place is so famous that it is in my book “Oldest Restaurants in the USA and Europe”. Try the Amish dishes and all you can eat fish fry. Dr. Diane Holloway Cheney
