We visited while in Stillwater for the weekend celebrating our anniversary. We went for dinner, drinks and had a wonderful time soaking in the speakeasy vibe.
The cocktail menu is impressive. There are plentiful options to choose from, ranging from classics to unique house creations. Everything we ordered was well-crafted and delicious, even the non-alcoholic options. The King Kamehameha was nice and strong! The non-alcoholic option we had was The Lieutenant (raspberry, lemon and mint)…yum!
Food options were, in my opinion, a bit limited. That being said what we had was good. The Adobo Chicken Tacos were flavorful, spices were spot on & really packed a punch. The temperature of the meat could have been a little hotter. The Pesto Linguine (ordered without the mushrooms) was a perfect temperature….hot and very tasty. Portion sizes were just right.
We ordered a piece of cheesecake to-go as we were too full to have dessert right away. When our check was brought to us our server (we didn’t ever get her name) said “Dessert is on the house, Happy Anniversary!”. That was a thoughtful touch making the night feel extra special.
If you’re looking for a fun atmosphere and unique cocktails, this is the place to be. We’ll definitely go back for the drinks and the great service!

Walking down the stairs into The Velveteen is like being transported back in time. From the swanky atmosphere to the delicious drinks, this is an all time favorite spot of mine. The staff is always a delight and forever fashionably dressed. This is the perfect spot for a cozy date night or a chatty girl dinner with your friends. Will always recommend to any friends or family visiting the Stillwater area!

Amazing!! I go to a lot of craft cocktail places mostly in Minneapolis and restaurants as well. I’m very picky….This place has the cool atmosphere like the others BUT the cocktails are much better than most of them which is what really matters imo. The staff were all very nice and friendly and even gave my girlfriend a recipe for a cocktail that she fell in love with. Will most definitely come back. Thank you Velveteen for an enjoyable evening.

The Velveteen was amazing! We had a private event /wedding reception organized and flawlessly executed by Cyrus and team on 12/28/25. We had approximately 80 guests and a wonderful acoustic guitarist/singer to compliment the wonderful atmosphere and decor. Amy/Austen and others did an absolutely phenomenal job. The service was A+ and the food was really, really good. Our guests raved about everything and cocktails were flowing in Velveteen fashion. Thanks for making it happen for us, we are very thankful and appreciative of your efforts. A big callout to the chef, everything was delicious. (I would recommend that menu to any of your future events)
Thanks again, we’ll be at the Velveteen again soon as a married couple.!

We’ve been here several times and have enjoyed every visit. Our last visit was with a group of six. We made a reservation and were comfortably seated at a combo booth and chairs. Staff was very attentive and even accommodated two more friends that wanted to join us.
The N/A drinks were very good as were the specialty drinks. I liked my Asian bowl (even if my wife finds it too salty).
Every member of the staff we encountered was friendly and helpful from suggesting drinks to keeping water on the table.

Great food! Great service! Great atmosphere! So why the one star rating? Their last call is almost ALWAYS more than one hour before advertised closing time!!!!! If you arrive at 9:05 pm and closing time is 10pm you WILL NOT be allowed to stay. This has personally happened to me on over half a dozen times!! Just recently we arrived at 9:02 pm and yep you guessed it, we were turned away. (For reference it was a Wednesday night and the place was about half full of people. On my way out we passed 2 other couples on their way into the Velveteen who were also turned away… At 9:05!)

We walked in to The Velveteen Speakeasy without a reservation on a Saturday night in October. We were seated right away. The lighting was low enough to be quaint but light enough to read the menu. The seating was very comfortable and the decor was interesting. The room itself felt like you were in an exclusive club. Our drinks were sophisticated and delicious. Our server, Amy, was beautiful, friendly and professional– she didn’t spill a drop. We would definitely recommend.

The cocktails here are unique! The food is limited here- (it’s a hidden speakeasy… Cocktails are their specialty!) but very good. Also, the portions (at least when I went) were smaller. The atmosphere is COOL! A great place to sit and enjoy an evening in a romantic atmosphere. I can’t remember if they play Ragtime or jazz music or music from the 20’s or 30’s, but if they are reading this, I strongly suggest that you do that to enhance the atmosphere! Beautiful and warmly-low-lit place. It’s soooo cool! Worth the stop. I can’t remember if they take reservations, but if they do, I’d make them. Not a cheap evening, but I thought it was worth it.

This is a cozy place. All the drinks we tried were really good. The bartender was nice and helpful. We came when they opened so there was no themed music playing, kind of sucked. But the time was still enjoyable! A perfect place for a small date night. Would love to come back and see some live music here one weekend.
