I saw The Varsity on a food show years ago and it’s been on my list ever since. Was in Atlanta for parents weekend and was beyond excited to realize I was only a block away. It’s such a cool, iconic spot. From the outside it looks like it might seat 50 to 100 people, but inside, it’s vast with room after room of places to sit, looks like it could easily sit 400 people, cool wall decor that is a throwback to early college days, TVs everywhere and a cool “old school“ vibe. It’s the perfect spot for pregame or late night happiness.

You order at the counter from a pretty basic menu of mostly burgers and dogs and fries and onion rings with lots of soda choices. There had to be at least 12 lines going at one time, each cashier with their own special “attitude“ of almost being exasperated to work there, a little unfriendly, but yet in an endearing kind of way. Be sure to grab your free, paper “the varsity” retro hat and wear it with pride.

We ordered a couple burgers, chili dogs, fries, onion rings, and sodas. They were all better than expected. This is no high-end, five diamond, bougie, fluffy food joint, this is beyond fantastic, greasy burgers, cheesy chili dogs, incredible hand cut fries, and mounds of greasy, delicious onion rings. Exactly what you’d want from a mid afternoon, pregame, “feels like the backyard” grill session. The burger and dog buns are soft and steamy, chewy and delicious. The cheese is literally craft American slices, torn into strips and thrown on a chili dog, where the dog is firm, meaty heaven, with a massive scoop of smooth, rich, chili, and perfect “kid reminiscent“ torn slices of craft American cheese, straight out of the cellophane wrapper. The burger patties are perfectly beefy and delicious, smashed down with nothing but a soft, chewy, steamy, buttered, and grilled bun slopped on a paper plate that brings back a million memories of perfect backyard grilling.

Go refill your soda as many times as you’d like and hang out at a table or wooden booth in the comfy, minimalist atmosphere, surrounded by televisions on different channels in each room.

I loved this experience, the atmosphere is perfect, the food is outstanding, the service was all that it needed to be, and the prices aren’t bad for all that you get, could not have asked for much more. Would I go back? Absolutely! I wish this place was closer, I’d be there at least once per week.

Check out the attached photos for a good feel of the joint.

It’s so much fun to take a walk back in time here. The food is familiar and old school with a taste that is not common. I’ve heard on game day it gets very crowded but just on an average Sunday evening, it is fine.

Chili dogs with coleslaw was good. Never had hotdogs like that. Fries were good as well. Onion ring was too greasy and could tell not fresh oil. Servers were all friendly and vibe of the restaurant was great. I think it’s great for the experience but not the place I’d go back for food choice.

It’s been around a long time. When in Atlanta we try to make a trip. No nonsense service. But they’ve learned efficiency. Hard to choose between the fries and the onion rings – and the burger or the hot dog. So, we got some of it all. What’s your favorite at The Varsity?.

“WHAT DO YA HAVE, WHAT DO YA HAVE” You HAVE to stop at The Varsity if you’re in atlanta because it is a staple. However know that the food isn’t great, it’s very greasy and overall something you could make better at home. The Varsity is rich in Atlanta history and has a very unique vibe.

Generations of my family and I are from Atlanta GA originally. My mother and father used to take my siblings and me there in the 70s’. I remember a time when an entire family of 4 or 5 people could enjoy a meal there for around $10. In fact, my late best friend worked there just after his high school graduation in 1979, and he bragged about how good the food tasted and his friendships with the founder/owners(wife, husband, and son). Yes, the food was greasy, but it tasted good and was apart of happy times for people and their families. Sadly, there have been changes made at the varsity that are not for the best. For example, baked instead of fried on many of your menu items. This may sound good health wise, but when it takes away from the original taste of the food, it is a very bad idea. Some things should stay the same like fair pricing and good or great taste of food. I was there yesterday and ordered two sweet potato pies. I ate one of them even though the great taste I was looking for was missing. The second pie didn’t look fresh, and on the inside the crust still looked white as if it wasn’t cooked all the way through. This is unacceptable especially since this is a seasonal menu item that’s only available around the holiday season. I am sure that most people including myself want great tasting food that is fresh and cooked perfectly especially during the holiday season. I have noticed that anytime I pass by your location or periodically stop in to shop that fewer and fewer cars are in the parking lot and fewer and fewer people are on the inside. You can correct this by going back to your original taste and promise of serving hot and cooked all the way greasy food–it worked in the 70s’, 80s’, 90s’, and early 2000s’. Go back to what worked before your doors close for good!

I am a 65 year Varsity customer. I drove two hours round-trip today to eat there. The food has always been great but today was the first time I felt compelled to leave a review. The food was great again but this review is about service. I am recovering from neck surgery and walking with a cane – not always that steady. I told the man helping me that I couldn’t carry a tray with a drink on it and use my cane. He said “pick up your wallet, your phone, and your glasses and I will take your tray to your table”. Wow! A forty something year old black guy helping a struggling 70 year old white guy with a cane to his table not because he had to but out of pure kindness. Unfortunately I failed to get his name – but he made my day. Our country needs more people like this! He was a handsome black guy – maybe 45 – with a diamond earring – very friendly and personable. If you see him ask him if he helped an old white guy with a blue cane to his table today. I love the Varsity and I love Varsity people! After all these years they raised the standard again today!

Not sure how anyone would eat at the varsity and expect anything but the varsity. In this instance you can’t rate a place on what it isn’t. It isn’t the best burger you’ve ever eaten but it will be the best varsity burger you’ve ever eaten. I say that because 30+ years after I ate my first varsity they still deliver. Of course the fries are a little limp, they aren’t processed crap…they are fresh potatoes. The onion rings are battered there on the spot. If you go to North Ave you might still see them in there peaking and cutting. Combo numbers shouldn’t be on the menu at the V but times have changed and I see them. I hate that the old school “crowd to the front ordering” doesn’t exist anymore. You used to have to fight your way to the front and try to make eye contact with someone behind the counter if you ever hoped to eat. In some cases you’d get to the front and realize you were in the fry and ring only line. Eat here if you’re visiting but know what it is. It is The V! I’m partial to a couple of dogs (they should come with chili unless you ask for them naked), cheese stake (because I liked the way they smash them to melt the cheese) and rings. Always ask for a side (which should mean some chopped onions in a little piece of wax paper) and don’t skip the frosted O or PC on ice and a pie.
