We started with oysters and fried olives with sausage. The fried olives were fantastic and I would love to recreate the dish when I get back home. Imagine tiny Scotch eggs with an olive inside, served with a mustard vinaigrette. Absolutely yummy.
For mains, I had my eye on the crab cakes because no one does them better than the Americans, but they were sold out. Instead, I ordered the crispy pork terrine with charred shards of cabbage. Another winning dish. The terrine was packed with slow-cooked pork and pan-fried until crispy around the edges. The charred cabbage was yummy too. The whole dish somehow reminded me of Christmas dinner with roast pork and Brussels sprouts.
This is definitely a restaurant worth visiting if you are in Pittsburgh. If only they have a branch in Singapore!
The drinks were great with a lot of fun options with different flavorings you don’t get everywhere! The appetizers, especially the farmers cheese with fresh vegetables as well as the tuna pate were out of this world! The steak frites live up to the hype, with an excellent sauce, as well as the Halibut with ratatouille being hands down the best out of everything. Unfortunately, the gnocchi was quite undercooked, but the sauce was quite good.
The other big miss was the dessert, with the panacotta being so thick, it was difficult to break apart with a spoon. The cake was a bit better, but not really worth your time or money.
Overall, the drinks, shareables, and most of the entrees were really great, a nice, upscale but still casual restaurant to go with friends!
The steak frites are the best in the city, excellent quality steak and fries that are somehow always perfect. The cocktail and wine curation is equally strong: thoughtful, top notch, and always offering something new to explore while still nailing the classics.
One of my favorite things is how the menu changes seasonally. It keeps everything fresh, and the seasonal appetizers are consistently standout. The foie blonde is a must every time: always a little different, always delicious.
Currently for mains (on top of the steak frites), the Crispy Pork Shoulder is unreal, the best texture and flavor I’ve ever had in a pork dish. Thursday burger nights are also fantastic.
They recently added a baked custard dessert that might be my favorite dessert I’ve ever had. No notes.
If you want a place that feels special every time without trying too hard, The Vandal is it.
Their wine program is also great, with a focus on Sonoma / west coast wines at reasonable prices. Finally, the service was so incredible! Loved everything.
The menu rotates frequently, with new dishes hitting every few weeks, so even as a somewhat regular, there’s always something new and intriguing to try.
The oysters are always fresh, the steak tartare is always executed perfectly, and the flavors, ingredients and complexity of every other menu item is always superb.
I love that they feature thoughtful non-alcoholic cocktails to round out their alcoholic counterparts.
I love the natural lighting and minimalistic vibe.
The service is always welcoming, kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable.
I do suggest making a reservation.
On downside: it’s quite warm inside on a summer day. Not a dealbreaker at all, but if you’re sensitive to heat, request the seat under the A/C!
