The Urchin is a fully independent brewery and shellfish pub with an excellent wine list. We have a micro-brewery downstairs, brewing 4 times a week and always have our own beer (Larrikin) on tap. Outside seating in the covered and heated garden and on the street. A relaxed, friendly atmosphere with Australian and pan-asian influences.

Ate here for the first time on Friday 13th. We had one of the best meals I have in a while. Food was so good, the whole lobster, sweet & spicy king prawns and the siracha butter scallops the highlight but all the food we had was great. Will definitely return soon!

Such a great pub. The service was amazing, especially our server Grace who was a dream at making sure we had everything we needed. The oysters were great and the portions were really generous! Can’t wait to go back!

We were a bit apprehensive walking out here from Brighton due to the distance and it was mainly the brewery aspect that drew us. They had a whole lobster for £38 which honestly seemed like a typo (in Edinburgh we would normally pay >£50) the lobster was phenomenal. The craft beer selection was a little bit disappointing but the food more than made up for it and service was excellent!

Very nice and cosy pub, with food better than your average pub grub! They focus on fish and there are some great dishes with high quality fish on both the classic menu and the constantly changing specials. The flavours were fun and creative, pairing fish with things you don’t see much elsewhere – they do still have the classics too though!

The food was indeed very nice, but a little pricey for what you actually got. The oysters were especially good and £2.50 for a plain one isn’t actually that bad! The service was lovely the whole night and we had a very romantic evening 🙂

Always a great experience at the Urchin! Can’t find any fresher seafood for such affordable prices. Everything is cooked to perfection and served with love. They deffo know their food and you can tell from their wine list and from the flavour combinations they serve. The staff has been lovely everytime I been there, and the sitting area is clean and nicely decorated. Only issue was some stones left in the mussels so they weren’t properly cleaned but that happened only once (yesterday) however they’re forgiven because everything else is 10/10! *chefs kiss*

Scallop, Squid, 2 x Muscles superb. Local IPA and a glass of Sancerre also taken. All very well looled after. Thank you. We will make time to come back.

The seafood here is excellent, it’s fresh, it’s creative and it tastes fantastic. The oysters were exactly as they should be – fresh and clean. The highlights were the specials with some nice touches like the scallops with a chilli miso butter and the king prawns in a brioche bun with remoulade sauce.

The whole (undressed) crab was good value but it’s an effort to eat – as it is covered in a hot butter sauce making it a messy proposition, if you’re experienced at breaking down a whole crab its not too bad but even I couldn’t get it done before the rest went cold.

Value wise the prices are about average for seafood – not too expensive, not cheap either. I’d say the lobster was perhaps priced a tad high compared to everything else but it will depend on season and demand.

I would add the bar had an excellent selection of drinks to accompany the food, some unique craft beers paired particularly well with the seafood. While the clamato in the bloody / virgin Mary is a great choice.

The disappointment here though was the service. It wasn’t a particularly busy Saturday afternoon and there were 3 or 4 running front of house but there were times when no one was at the bar or even in the restaurant. We were asked for our order but needed a few minutes, 10mins later no one had even looked our way. One of the wait staff in particular looked like they did not want to be there, rolling eyes, making odd comments and just being a bit moody. However the rest of the staff were very friendly and nice, it was just difficult to get their attention in the first place.

Flawless experience. Went to celebrate a birthday and had a fabulous lunch. Service was 10/10, he was very knowledgeable and explained the dishes to us very clearly. We went with various sharing plates, all of which had great flavour and a good size. Fairly priced which is rare nowadays. Definitely will be back.
