Chic eatery providing New American dishes in a polished, low-key atmosphere with a bar & patio.

Everything was top notch! Our waitress Jewell was Busy and still stayed on top of things make sure we were satisfied and had everything we needed and wanted. I can not give her enough praise for the outstanding job she did as our waitress. This place is one of only a few restaurants in the Des Moines area that are always 5 stars!!

Wife’s salmon was good. Drinks were good. Tenderloin seemed overcooked.

First timers with my mom and girlfriend and we had a pleasant experience. Alex was our server, and was nice, quick, and accommodating. Food itself was good, we really liked the spin dip and thought the blackened pasta was good, but not the best. My mom got shrimp tacos and those looked fantastic. Overall service, staff, and atmosphere was my favorite though. We will be back!

We were just driving through the area when we decided to stop somewhere to eat. It was 1.5 hours before they closed. We figured we’d get some easy dishes so we didn’t hold them up too much. We ordered the bruschetta and mussels appetizers, as well as the smaller balsamic chicken salad, and a side of fries. The bruschetta was kind of confusing. It was like a personal pan pizza with melted cheese, saucy tomatoes, and very soft bread. It was also served with a butter/parmesan sauce which was not listed on the menu and didn’t really serve us any purpose. It was still good, just not what we were expecting. The mussels were quite good for Iowa. The white wine sauce was very nice and the portions were hefty. I boxed up the rest of the sauce to use in my linguine alle vongole the next day. Our server was wonderful. We did have to ask for silverware but she was pretty attentive otherwise. The prices were fair and the ambience was fine for a quick bite. All of the food came out fast so we ate, were paid up, and out the door by close. I’d come back and have a more leisurely meal here at some point. Not sure if I’d bring my gluten-free/vegan friends here but those with dietary restrictions have some options.

We just love this place, always a great experience. If you like mussels, the appetizer is so good and a very big portion. Never had a bad meal and the employees are great. Prices are in line and generous, which is sometimes hard to find these days. It’s the one of the best places in Des Moines if you only want to spend $20 for a great dinner. Atmosphere is for any occasion, we love everything about this place.

First experience – there are almost no beef options, but there are about 20 chicken dishes to choose from if you like that. The only steak I could get was the “steak sandwich” which was a dry piece of bread with a dry steak and dry onion rings on top. Huh? I pulled the steak out and it was well cooked (sirloin though, very little fat). Sweet potato fries were good. Just confused by the decision to serve steak like that and lack of options. Great service, enjoyed the atmosphere.

Didn’t even get the opportunity to eat here due to an extremely rude manager. He told our party 30-40 minutes for a table. Ok, no problem. We gave him our phone number, watched him write it down, and walked across the parking lot to grab a drink at a different establishment. After about an hour, we walked back to Urban Grill and were told “We still don’t have room for you.” I asked him why he told us 30-40 minutes, and he said he told us 45 minutes to an hour. He absolutely did not say that, and my party of five can verify that. He made no effort to be kind, offer a solution, or apologize for the
wait. We would have been willing to wait longer had he offered that and been nice about it, but we weren’t even given the opportunity. He said “I have to seat 2-3 people at a time.” Ok, then why even bother writing down the phone number for a party of five?? Through our entire interaction, he did not smile one time and seemed he wanted to be anywhere but there. We understand people have bad days but his job as a manager is to be kind and accommodating. He was anything but. This was to be a birthday celebration for my husband’s 50th. Thankfully, we found another establishment that happily accommodated us and provided excellent service.

A little hidden gem! You may underestimate from the outside, but this is a great restaurant with reasonably priced and delicious food – I really loved the chicken picatta. Appreciate the dark, intimate feel – great for dates or for a good talk with a friend. Service has always been prompt and attentive. This has a nicer somewhat quiet, mellow feel, so if kiddos aren’t having a best behavior day it may feel awkward for parents. Worth a detour!

Ugh, we live close and want to love this place. The atmosphere is perfectly subdued but lively, the front of house/wait staff are extraordinary…but the cooks are killing this restaurant. In the end it’s all about the food, and that has definitely gone downhill as of late. We ordered onion rings, which were plentiful, but laden with grease on the portions that still held breading. The chicken “fingers” were just whole, untrimmed breasts cut in half — more like grisly chicken wrists. The backyard chicken was uncut-able and my first bite of chicken pacata crunched (again) with untrimmed bone…also a whole breast simply plopped onto the top of pasta. Simply put, the cooks (we CANNOT use the moniker “chef” here) are killing what could be a top notch destination in Urbandale.
*Update*
I’m leaving the above to highlight just how much has changed in a few short weeks. The atmosphere and wait staff are still top notch, but the chefs (yes, I said chefs this time) set a new standard for themselves. If you’ve ever tried to time a perfect — and I do mean sublimely “perfect” — med/rare filet from grill to table whilst managing eight other things in a hot kitchen then you know I’m not just throwing the, “P” word around. Five Stars for that alone, which paired exceedingly well with a $5 glass of house cabernet, as we happened in during happy hour. There’s good reason for all of us to be happy: a new, streamlined menu featuring light, deftly assembled fare with lots of seafood and other lean protein options. We tried the new “inside-out” crab rangoon appetizer which arrived with a basket of the most perfectly fresh fried won-ton chips we’ve tasted, well…anywhere. Paired with the warm, but not scalding, creamy crab rangoon dip it was just another perfect thing — I even ate my vegetables. Trust, that’s a thing.
We are relieved to report that Urbandale does still indeed have a top-notch restaurant to be proud of, and enjoy. We’ll be enjoying again soon and suggest anyone reading this do the same.

I will say this is the first time I have been disappointed with my order. If you want a French Dip, go to Taste of Italy. It was nothing special here, came out Luke warm, Fries were barely warm. One time waiter checked on us, I said the food was ok. He said great and moved on.
