Rekindling memories of Helena’s beloved Union Market, The Union by Old Salt is a whole-animal craft butcher shop and wood-fired grill, serving lunch and dinner in the heart of downtown Helena. With its Montana inspired menu and salt of the earth hospitality, it’s a celebration of community by Old Salt Co-op. From the iconic Centennial and Blackfoot Valleys to the sweeping Rocky Mountain Front and Big Belt Mountains, Old Salt Ranches raise nourishing food that can only come from ecological integrity. But it takes a community. From Ranch to butcher to customer – to make a regenerative agriculture. In fact, land itself is a community, we are members, land is kin.

The staff were very friendly and pleasant. The main dining area offers booths and table seating options. We noticed an upstairs dining area probably used for private events. The restaurant offers a good selection of beer and wine.
The menu has limited options based on the daily specials. On our visit the restaurant was serving two steak options.
The meat quality is probably the best available. It’s a little pricey but the quality of the food and service makes the overall experience well worth it.
With Brandi we had the perfect host! She was way more than a waitress: Polite, funny, friendly – and what makes a restaurant visit special: She was personal, meaning: You could talk about many other things than just the menu or the order – life, travel, interests; and that’s what makes it personal! Very nice!
The food was delicious! The meat was perfectly made to order. Our chef, Gabe, was only his 2nd and 3rd night at the grill – and he did an awesome job! And as a side we had the polenta: What can I say?!? It was to die for!
The Union is a very nice place for fantastic meat and a nice atmosphere. Highly recommendable! Thanx guys for great work!
The beet salad was hands down the BEST I’ve had. So yummy.
We had some sort of beef croquettes for a starter & they were fabulous too.
Star of the evening was my 16 ounce ribeye, medium rare. Seasoning was perfection and the grilled ciabatta bread rounded it out nicely.
Would definitely give them a try if you are in the area.
It is a wonderfully joyful atmosphere. Light and bright with smiles all around from staff. We instantly felt welcome.
From farm to table. Montana cattle ranches provide your steak of choice, and as for your sides, the chef has created a collection of exceptional dishes that charm your pallet.
Emily took great care explaining the menu and was quick to be sure we received everything we needed.
Our food came out quickly. There are no steak knives because your butter knife glides right through the fresh steak. Exceptional service and extraordinary food.
A sensational addition to Helena.
It did not disappoint. We split a beautiful, crisp mixed greens salad with dried pears tossed in a light vinaigrette, and a prime rib sandwich on a French roll. The beef was truly flavorful and juicy, but the star of the lunch were the tallow fried onions. If you love onions, I suggest you get an extra order! I’m wondering, “Do they ship to Maui?” I may have to mail-order some tallow to recreate this! Mahalo! And good luck on your nomination as Best New Restaurant in the USA.
