Had a great dinner at Tributary Restaurant in Winsted! The ribeye steak was cooked perfectly—tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The seating was comfortable and made for a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere. Service was excellent from start to finish. Definitely a spot I’d recommend if you’re in the area looking for a solid meal and great hospitality.

We were there on Saturday night, we had reservations. The prime rib was tender, moist and full of old fashioned roast beef flavor. It was the best prime rib we’ve had in years, better than the local upscale steak places.

Our waitress had one foot in the air all night, but she remembered everything, made sure we were well served.

Minus one star because for atmosphere because it was so noisy, but that’s what happens when you serve great food.

Once the larger tables cleared out we were able to visit with the other friendly diners.

We’ll be regulars even though it’s a bit of a drive. This is not a fancy place, no one is dressed up, but the tables are not on top of each other.

Great food, well prepared and good service!!

The restaurant has its nice features such as wood floors, post and beam ceilings etc. Some of the chairs are tattered, there’s clutter from setting up service and possibly office overflow. It takes a while to get seated, almost like no one is working here.

Once we got seated the service was fairly good. The meals came out good, shrimp scampi and corned beef specials were great. I ordered a prime rib, rare, which was the worst prime rib I’ve ever gotten anywhere. No rib cap on my piece, and it was well done and tough. No seasoning. No au jus. The piece was mangled. Smelled like it came out of a microwave. The other order served at the table was cooked nicely and was seasoned. I received some sort of end piece. Other slices served after mine looked rare and delicious. Clearly if you want a good piece you need to be a regular.

The desserts are superb.

We recently dined at The Tributary in Winsted, CT and had a very pleasant experience. What stood out the most was our server, George. From the moment we were seated, he was warm, attentive, and professional. He went out of his way to make our 2-year-old feel welcome, bringing her small touches of entertainment and checking in to make sure she was comfortable. That thoughtfulness made our meal much more relaxed and family-friendly, and it was clear that George genuinely cares about creating a positive experience for all guests.

The food was excellent—well-prepared, flavorful, and presented nicely. We enjoyed everything we ordered, and it paired well with the calm, clean, and inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. While the visit wasn’t extraordinary in every aspect, George’s service was certainly the highlight. His patience, friendliness, and attention to detail made the evening feel personal and enjoyable.

We left feeling appreciated as guests and grateful for the small ways George made the experience smooth and welcoming for our family. The Tributary is a clean, comfortable place to enjoy a meal, and we will definitely be returning for another dinner with friends and family.

If I could give a 10 I would. Such quaint atmosphere. Great service, small menue which means the food is going to be delicious, and it was! We ate everything on our plates with the perfect amount of food and happily ate the best desserts! Best part? No background music and it was comfortably warm. We will definitely visit again when in the area.

Very nice experience food was great! I love their salmon with the julienned veggies and the potatoes so delicious. My husband had the chicken parm and he also had their chicken and rice soup he said it was very good. Chocolate cake was delicious too! We will definitely be back soon!

Dec 24 – Perfect French martini and a generous house salad started off this birthday dinner for four. The star dish was the rack of lamb, fortunately mine. The lemon veal was ordered a 2nd time and enjoyed once again. Chicken Berkshire was original but had too many peaches. The filet mignon was well done and not rare as ordered but we didn’t want to send it back. The chocolate cake hit the spot, candle included.

Dec 23 – Another birthday dinner with grilled forest chicken pasta, stuffed sole, salmon and lemon veal. Limoncello and carrot cake for dessert.

Spring 2023 – Nice late lunch in the bar recently. Stuffed mushrooms, turkey benedict and steak sandwiches with two martinis.

Dec 22 – Excellent birthday dinner. 3 Prime Ribs, 2 MR/1 end cut; crumb top sole; warm rum & N/A cider, Bombay Sapphire martini & Dogfish Pumpkin Draft; apps: mussels, fried clam strips, stuffed mushroom salads. Desserts: chocolate mousse cake with birthday candle & carrot cake. Still the best Christmas decorations and fine service.

Oct 22 – We ordered two veal dishes for dinner. The Lemon Veal is sautéed medallions with lemon, butter, capers, and fresh green beans on rice. Veal Medallions are sautéed with shiitake mushrooms, plum tomatoes and white wine served with a roasted potato sweet red pepper hash. Both were very flavorful and tender. The house salads are always full of fresh vegetables plus shredded cheese and croutons.

Feb 22 – The Trib is consistent. It’s why they’re still in business and one of my favorite things about this restaurant. I’ve eaten here many more times than my reviews show and there’s never anything negative to report. We enjoyed steamed mussels with garlic bread made just the way it should be, an order of baked stuff shrimp and a special with sole topped with shrimp. Their salads continue to be bountiful, the baked rolls fresh and service is always friendly. Prime Rib Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

This Mother’s Day, 5/10/20, The Tributary gave us a wonderful take-out meal. Two prime rib dinners, one oriental salmon and one crumbtop sole.

Four salads with many ingredients came with the dinners, (multiple dressing choices – their blue cheese is exceptional and house Italian the right blend) Two bags of varied rolls and breads with butter packets were also included.

We chose to give The Tributary our business because they are really conscientious people, an institution in this part of CT and the food is always reliably good. They in turn, recognizing us as valued customers, gave us two complimentary desserts! A slice of key lime pie, which was one of the best I’ve ever had, (and I bake a great one myself) and lemon meringue, also delicious. Very thoughtful of them.

To summarize, the two prime rib orders were cooked as ordered, medium rare and medium well. Both came with au jus on the side. The accompanying potatoes were mashed not whipped. As someone who never serves carrots with steak, it somehow really worked here.

There are few restaurants today that offer popovers with dinner. Impressive on its own for this reason, they are as they should be, light, tall and the correct density. These come with the prime rib meal.

The oriental salmon was tender and sweet. The green bean side was not undercooked nor limp. The rice pilaf was rice pilaf.
Baked crumbtop sole with crabmeat stuffing was satisfying with real crabmeat and Hollandaise sauce. Green beans and rice were sides.

I’m posting the photos from this meal along with a couple of others I found in my photo archives of other fine menu choices, the hot opened Turkey Benedict sandwich, a salad with roast chicken strips and two coffee drinks.

Fine reliable restaurant which has served the area for decades, whether it’s lunch or dinner. Full menu which consists of everything you would expect to see. Plentiful salad bar with many add-on choices and polite service. There is a separate bar room from the dining room. Closed on Mondays. At Christmas time, they go all out with decorations if you’re in the mood to be merry.

Friends and I went after a day of climbing at Hanging Mountain. Our waitress was joking that they don’t mess around and she was right. Starting with the salads that came with our entrees, we saw she was right, they were great appetizer sized salads which were very varied. Our entrees did not disappoint, they were all very healthily size and absolutely delicious. We got a piece cannoli cake as well, that was spot on. Very excited to stop back in next time I’m at Hanging Mountain.
