Classy, great service and food, love the place! The Tavern is in the historic The Heathman Hotel in Portland. A must while visiting Portland. The afternoon tea at The Library is amazing.

My boyfriend and I had valentines dinner here. Our reservation and when we sat down was 4:15, we didn’t get our entrees till almost 6:00 pm. We ordered a drink pairing, which was dropped almost 20 minutes before our food multiple times. The food was five star, zero complaints. But it was an over 2 hour dinner. Our server seemed flustered, he forgot our drink pairing like 3 times and my boyfriend had to ask him to explain it multiple times. We literally had a joke going how many more times the server could say “I’m sorry”. The service and kitchen speed were awful, the food was fantastic, we won’t be back. To their credit, they comped a round of drinks and did apologize a bunch. But when you prepay over 300(!!!) dollars for a meal, I would expect a little more attention to details. Forgot to add the server made fun of me not being able to pronounce carpaccio Multiple times, like he made it a joke for longer than necessary. He kept going when I was not laughing and brought it back as a “beet salad because it’s easier to say”.. maybe have a little more tact? We are paying you?

We had the pleasure of enjoying both dinner and breakfast at The Tavern, and the experience was memorable from start to finish. For dinner, we were joined by two guests, and the food truly impressed all of us.
My wife ordered the sirloin—typically not a cut I associate with being top-tier—but I stand corrected. It was one of the best steaks I’ve ever tasted. Fortunately, I had ordered the ravioli and was able to trade for a few bites. That said, the ravioli portion was on the smaller side, so if you arrive hungry, it might not be the most satisfying choice.
Our guests shared the roasted chicken, which was cooked to perfection—tender, flavorful, and generously portioned. It was large enough to feed both of them, with enough left over for me to sample, which I appreciated given my modest entrée. The vegetables were also a standout—perfectly cooked with a satisfying crispness.
We capped off the evening with espresso martinis, thoughtfully mixed and served in chilled glasses. Both breakfast and dinner service were professional and attentive, but our dinner waitress stood out with her warm personality and witty banter—she was fantastic.
Pricing felt reasonable for the quality and experience. Overall, The Tavern delivered a delightful dining experience, and we look forward to returning.

We experienced a thoroughly disappointing Valentine’s Day dinner, where my husband’s reservation for a prefix dinner fell short in every aspect. Upon arrival, the hostess/manager’s greeting, which included mention of the kitchen being very backed up, set an unfortunate tone. The staff’s audible discontent further detracted from the what little ambiance there was. After being offered a seat at the bar during our wait, we were eventually seated 45 minutes past our scheduled reservation time without apology or acknowledgement from the hostess. Unfortunately, the service did not improve, as our waiter seemed unprepared and unhappy, failing to greet us or offer any pleasantries. When my husband mentioned our subsequent plans, the waiter expressed doubts about completing our meal within the allotted 90 min time frame we now had but agreed to expedite service. He lacked knowledge of the menu and the ingredients in specific dishes and his exasperation was clearly visible. The food was slow to come out and lacked creativity in plating. The meal took over the 90 min to be served and because of our after dinner plans, no dessert (which was included in our prefix) was brought to us, even after asking the waiter for it. We left overpaying for a subpar meal with horrible service and complete lack of Valentine’s Day charm.

Truly, the most disappointing meal we have had in Portland!

For the price being charged—especially with 20% gratuity included—I would expect both the quality and service to fully reflect the experience.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case during our High Tea.

The food selection felt limited (no fruit or chocolate), with multiple items featuring gelée, and limited tea selection. We also noted in advance that one guest was gluten-free, mentioned it again upon being seated, yet the first item brought to the table was a scone (it was delicious and warm). When we asked if it was gluten-free, the server wasn’t sure. While a gluten-free plate was eventually provided, the server couldn’t identify what the items were and if any items on the main tray were gluten free, someone from the kitchen had to come out to explain. And even then, some items still didn’t have a great explanation.

Several items were disappointing in quality. The focaccia sandwich bread was dried out, as was the brie prosciutto and cranberry éclair.
The service itself felt hesitant and unconfident (Server was “Ti**”). The server seemed inexperienced and uncomfortable, which impacted the overall experience. When gratuity is included (also not mentioned anywhere like Open Table/website), guests reasonably expect a higher level of service and attentiveness, and there simply didn’t seem to be much effort made or welcoming spirit.

Additionally, I wasn’t aware the Heathman was under construction at the time of our visit. Without the ambiance of the main Heathman room, the experience didn’t feel comparable, yet the pricing remained the same. Charging for a white tablecloth experience without delivering the full atmosphere and service made it feel like poor value.

I also noticed on our receipt that we are charged 3.00% “Credit Card Recovery Fee” for payments made with a credit card. Nothing mentioned up front that they do this.

Overall, considering the price, food quality, service, and setting, the experience didn’t feel worth it.

We had an early reservation due to our concert tickets for Oregon Symphony at 7:30. Upon walking in the hostess didn’t address us, nor did she hurry to greet us. She disappeared on a mysterious mission. The bartender graciously went to find her for us and after walking past us twice she curtly said “I’ll be right with you”. When she did take us to our table she provided us with outdated menus. The server Sam was pleasant enough. He recommended the carrot appetizer. It was underwhelming. Texas toast and hard carrots in mustard, akin to mustard potato salad. Strange combo: bread with uncooked cubes of carrot. Main dishes: when the order was put in for my steak …I asked for medium, it came back at minimum medium rare. Our server was difficult to flag down but he did return it to the kitchen and had them re cook and replate. Much better second time. My daughter asked for no cheese on salad (she’s lactose intolerant) and that was forgotten too. On all our dishes the veggies were overly oily. My son enjoyed the salmon. For the price the food was disappointing, we didn’t even order dessert. At the end of the day it’s hotel food. Overly priced and overly touted in its descriptive Frenchified glory.
I think this place is a better spot for drinks and lounging! Great location too.

What a pleasant surprise, the bar was very nice. We stopped by for their $8 burger week. The burger was very good I heard. As I don’t eat meat, they have other none meat involved dishes and I enjoyed it very much. The inside is nice and specious. The cocktails are very well made. I highly recommend this place.

My husband and I dined here for a Valentine’s Day prix fixe dinner, expecting a relaxed and well-paced evening. Unfortunately, it became the most disappointing restaurant experience I’ve ever had.

The restaurant appeared unprepared to execute a multi-course service. Several tables in our section — at least four couples — were frustrated with long gaps between courses and difficulty locating their server. We also struggled to get assistance and ultimately had to go to the host stand multiple times, even to request basic items like water.

When my salmon arrived, it was undercooked. I asked if I could switch to the alternate third-course option and was told it was no longer available. The salmon was returned to me, but the taste still seemed off. After waiting roughly 20 minutes for our server to check back in, my husband went to the host stand to request the check and have our desserts boxed to go so we could leave.

Our server eventually returned and said she would speak with her manager about comping the salmon and offered glasses of prosecco for the inconvenience. We declined the drinks and again requested our desserts to go. Despite that, she later brought prosecco anyway and said she was “still trying to convince” the manager to comp the dish.

Eventually, she told us a percentage of the bill would be comped — after our card had already been charged — but could not explain how or what percentage. When we asked to speak with the manager, she became defensive and suggested the issue was simply that I “wasn’t a salmon person.” And that they had provided us the full meal – so what were they supposed to do?This raised concerns about whether she had actually spoken with management at all. I highly doubt from this interaction we will see any percentage refunded to our credit card. We didn’t appreciate how we were spoken to by our server, and decided to leave this uncomfortable situation.

When I spoke directly with the manager while leaving, it became clear she had not communicated accurately about the situation. The response from management was simply an apology, with no real resolution. It was very disappointing.

Given the number of tables experiencing similar issues, this felt less like an isolated mistake and more like a breakdown in service execution and communication. At minimum, the restaurant should review service training and ensure staff clearly understand — and honestly communicate — their policies regarding food quality concerns and billing adjustments.

Sadly, what was meant to be a special occasion turned into a frustrating and uncomfortable evening.

Worst restaurant experience in a very long time. Met friends there for dinner before a show at the Arlene Schnitzer hall.

Two of us ordered the roasted chicken. After a long wait, it was served and was rare at best. It was the worst thing ever served to me. I flagged down a man who looked to be a manager. He was and the dishes were returned. We both ordered burgers in place of the chicken. The burgers came out less than rare, the bun was red from the meat. Again, sent them back. Was told my wine and food would be comped. My husband paid the bill. My wine was not comped. My husband’s watermelon salad was not very good. I firmly believe the entire bill for the 4 of us should have been comped. If you’re headed to a show; plan to have dinner elsewhere.

Our server Amelia saved the experience. Cocktails were good and reasonably priced. Ordered the house burger very well done, and it was served rare (by anyone’s standards)and cold in the middle. Had an event to get to and didn’t have time to wait for a replacement. I didn’t ask her to, or raise a big fuss, but my burger was taken off our bill, and a sincere apology was given. Not our server’s fault, but she made it right. She was efficient and friendly.
