The Surly Mermaid was established in 2015 with a vision to create a local hangout for the residents of Sidney with a focus on fresh, creative, delicious ingredients to showcase food from Vancouver Island and our community. We take pride in being Ocean Wise certified- although it’s not something we tend to brag about. Our commitment is to continue to deliver our customers excellent food, refreshing cocktails and seasonal draft beer, great service and a warm, casual setting.

What a fantastic place! It didn’t look like much from the outside, but then you step in and I was impressed. The staff were very friendly. The atmosphere was wonderful. The waitress was a beautiful soul inside & out, and the food was scrumptious. Very good. We had the octopus for an appetizer, we had local beer and then we definitely stocked to the ocean style main meals when on the ocean must have ocean!

We stopped by last week. They have a live music in random Tuesday. The weather and view outside is good (a bit burnt if you turn at sunlight)
All the menu was good and come in decent portions. The staff was good.
I like the seafood chowder menu, not too salty. A bit fishy smell for mussels menu ,only just a little bit for sensitive people.

I had my first visit to the Surly Mermaid this week and it certainly won’t be my last. The service was great and cheerful and the food was absolutely delicious. This is going to be my new pit stop when visiting Sidney. Well done!

Delicious food, yummy cocktails (smoked-vodka Caesar with candied bacon! ) and a dog-friendly patio. In fact, service was so good they served a bowl of water and salmon snacks for our pup immediately.
Service was fast and pleasant. Thank you Dillon for looking after us and our pup!

The person in our party who got the seafood chowder said it was the best they had while on Vancouver Island. The chicken burger was a bit tricky to eat, but good. The salad was okay.

The food was absolutely amazing, the eggplant lasagna was incredible and as someone who had never had eggplant lasagna if you had not told me I could not tell. The second dish I tried was the shroom & bacon cheese burger with fries. The burger was delicious and the fries were perfect, ketchup almost ruined them.
I ate outside on the patio with a great view of the harbor and the service was very good.

My first visit to the Surly Mermaid midweek looking for some refreshments. Late Jan. and I was thinking about Mexico I asked the very attentive server if she could make me a spice margarita it wasn’t on the menu but she said she had a great recipe. It was very tasty just what I needed ! Then I tried the Chili garlic prawns which were served in sizzling mini frying pan with a garlic Mexican chili butter cream sauce Yum Yum
with warm baguette to dip in the sauce until it was gone so good which I washed down with more margarita.
Highly recommend this place overlooking Sidney waterfront. I will be coming back !

We ordered the lamb burger and it was ok but kind I’d dry and a bit gamey. Also ordered steak sandwich which was more of a beef dip. Way too much bun. Drinks were good and service was fine. Biggest disappointment was the carrot cake. For 12$ it was small and not as good as we’ve had.
It’s a tiny restaurant but the atmosphere is great.

We hosted our holiday wrap up dinner at the Surly for the 4th year in a row and they took such good care of us. Our group continues to grow and this year they accommodated over 50 people. They made us a special menu and everyone got exactly what they wanted. We all were billed separately and our two server staff kept everything straight. We had so much fun and the atmosphere was warm and festive with the added bonus it being nice to keep our dollars local. Thank you for having us and we will definitely book again for next year. My friends and I will come in many times between now and then as well for the great drinks, good food, and friendly staff.
