Our server (Sam, I believe) was lovely, attentive and helpful.
We ordered drinks, apps, dinner and dessert and each item was perfect.
Apps: hummus- great flavor, pita bread was perfect. Definitely more than your standard hummus!
Lobster ravioli- so good! Rich flavor, perfect to share and have 1 each.
Coconut shrimp- excellent!
Dinner:
We ordered New York Sirloin, Atlantic Salmon, Cod, Fish and Chips and Two Way Duck.
I had the duck- it was So good!! I do not often order duck but decided to try it. The leg was ‘confit’ and the flavor and texture was delicious and tender. I forget how the breast was prepared but it was also wonderful (though I preferred the confit leg!). Each piece of the dinner was flavorful, never overly salty, just delicious.
I tried a bit of the fish and chips and loved the flavor and texture of the batter!! It was not bland like many batters, not sure how best to describe it other than tasty!
Everyone else loved their dinner as well.
Dessert: limoncello cake- yummy!! Not too rich, not too sweet.
Others had an apple bread pudding sort of dessert (not sure exactly what it was called), and they loved it.
We did not see a ghost or experience anything odd, but the experience of being in such an old building was very unique. We sat on the tavern side. The tavern is first come first serve- we arrived at 4:50pm and by the time they opened the door at 5:00, there was a line of a dozen or more. The dining room is reservation, but we enjoyed the cozy tavern and the woodstove. This was a saturday mid winter and there it was packed, so keep that in mind and plan accordingly
The oysters were fresh, but the mussels were overcooked, with several unopened and inedible. Service was careless at best. A simple request for an extra piece of toast with our mussels was refused because “the chef was too busy.” Later, the bartender offered plain bread she had already forgotten to bring.
The wine service was worse. My sister asked to taste a Malbec and was given a one ounce pour in a tiny aperitif glass instead of a proper wine glass. When we questioned it, the manager was curt and dismissive, telling me to lower my voice and insisting “you asked for a taste, and that is what you got.” The owner eventually came out and repeated, “I’ll make it right,” but never explained how. We decided to leave and dined elsewhere, where the hospitality was far better.
Later, I noticed their website only shows reviews from 2014 to 2016, back when the previous owner was in charge. That explains a lot.
The Sun Tavern once set the standard, but it no longer values its guests. Between the poor food, rude service, and lack of hospitality, it is not worth the price. There are far better options nearby.
Chowder salty and not much besides broth.
Ravioli very little lobster.
This visit was not up to the standards were use to at the Tavern
There’s a pretty good variety of dishes to choose from, from sophisticated entrees, to burgers and fish and chips.
Meals are prepared at the moment, with good quality and fresh ingredients, which allows modifications and special requests.
Even though vegetarian entrees aren’t on the menu, (but soups and sides are!) the chef will create a special dish for you if requested. The one in the picture was tonight’s dinner: a mix of grains, veggies, and nuts, accompanied by carrots cream.
