Great service. Good amount of food for the price. The spicy pinto beans are awesome. The okra is great. The potato salad is delicious. If your looking for a barbecue place. This is it.
I usually get the Big Boy Sampler; it is enough to feed me, my wife and the kiddo. Their brisket is on point as are their ribs and turkey. You know good BBQ when the meat is good enough to eat without sauce.
Staff is very friendly. There is a gentleman that I run into on a regular basis who is very cordial and helpful and lately, there is a younger lady working that is also helpful. They generally don’t cook the sides in advance so they are able to tell you how long that stuff takes to cook. They also know their craft and it is cool to talk to those types. I have also personally witnessed them having to deal with overly picky customers who complain about nonsensical things (probably want something for free) and, every time, they have been very professional.
Recently, they started selling donuts and they are also excellent. Most of the rest of the donut places around close early so you have to get there equally early if you want full selection options. Because these guys sell donuts in the morning and BBQ later in the day, they continue to offer the donuts after normal donuts hours. I have had the urge to get donuts at 4:00 in the afternoon before and this is the only place around that I have found that I can get good donuts at that time of the day.
I wish they did Doordash or some other delivery type service because I occasionally feel lazy but hey, I can’t fault them for not doing it if it doesn’t work for their business model. I would rather drive down there and get good food than them doing something that doesn’t work and go out of business. I also hope that, one day, they get a freestanding building. They have one table because they are in a gas station and I occasionally like to take the kiddo out to eat and hit up the ice cream shop on Main Street. That doesn’t work if the one booth is occupied. I also like to see these types of small, locally owned businesses that put out good quality at reasonable prices thrive. Many places want to charge a premium and expect people to pay that premium because they are locally owned but that only works to a point. These guys don’t do that.
Its not healthy food beyond just meat by the pound, all else full of sugar from the sauces to the donuts and loaded with cheese. The BBQ bowls are a nice item, but all the sugar sauce ruined it IMO. They are generous portions for the price.
Maybe consider the overly sweet BBQ sauce on the side to let patron decide how much, if any. Diabetics, or those on the way, beware.
The Nachos could be even better if the cheese was layered in the chips rather than all dumped on top. Its hard to stir made nachos.
Tater tots were hard and crunchy, though not bad, I had never had them this way, maybe thats the way they do it? Not a fan of crinkle cut fries so won’t be ordering those again. Steak fries or the Joe Willys type (when they are not cooked trice or burned) are happier options to me.
I will say usually the meats are good, but last time the pork in our bowl tasted off and it was actually too tough to consume, just chewed and chewed til had to give up and spit it out.
Interesting donut selection, the apple fritters are some of the best.
Great counter eatery.
