Tipp City, OH – Hickory River Smokehouse
Reviews
We’ve taken a school trip to Cincinnati Ohio and were blessed to be able to attend a MLS playoff game between the hometown FCC and visiting Columbus Crew. For this trip, my expectation of finding quality BBQ (outside of Mission BBQ) north of the Ohio River was so low that BBQ wasn’t even on my radar.
Much to my surprise, before the game, another fan brought to our attention that BBQ was sold on the concourse. That beautiful smoky aroma was detectable from what seemed like the sandwich alone, so of course I had to try it.
Just before halftime, my Junior BBQ Taster and I headed to the Smokehaus BBQ stand behind section 114. With all the fried food being served in the stadium, I’ll admit it was virtually impossible to follow the scent, but we managed to find it using our eyes. They had several offerings which included their Signature Nachos, Smoked Brisket Sandwich and Pulled Pork Sandwich… and since you’re reading this, you know why I’m here. For $14.99 I got the sandwich, coleslaw, (Nashville) hot potato chips and a choice of Original BBQ sauce or Carolina Gold sauce. I chose the Original BBQ sauce, which was a thick, sweet, ketchup style, no vinegar here folks.
The BBQ (pulled pork) sandwich was arguably light on the BBQ, but should be expected for stadium food. I didn’t see any bark in my sandwich but it did look like the Junior Taster had some on his. No smoky flavor here and sadly not much flavor at all and that was with the sauce on it. Strangely enough, the sandwich had 3 huge pickles on it. The coleslaw was creamy but again not big on flavor.
Back home I would’ve expected quite a bit more bang for my buck, but we were in Ohio at a stadium and TQL should be commended for at least attempting a BBQ stand. Now they just need to go learn from the pro pitmasters and we’ll all taste the difference.
And in case you’re still wondering about FCC… they won!
