I went to The Shanty to celebrate my birthday luncheon with my coworkers. It had been years since I last ate there, and I was so impressed! The restaurant was beautifully decorated for Christmas, which made the celebration feel even more special. Our meals arrived nice and hot, and we truly enjoyed our time celebrating together.”

If the area around Wadsworth, Zion, Winthrop Harbor, and Waukegan is sort of its own sub-region of northeastern Illinois, The Shanty is its unofficial centerpiece restaurant. Located off US-41 just past the WI/IL border, I’ve been here five times now and have had nothing short of a great experience every time I’ve come here. There’s something at every price point, depending on whether the vibe you’re going for from your meal is “elevated chain restaurant” or “supper club”. Highly recommend their lamb burger and olive oil gelato.

Our waitress and atmosphere were good. The soup of the day and sweet potato fries were definitely the highlight; I highly recommend them. I can’t quite remember, but it may have been chicken with lemon.

Very disappointing. I selected this place, based on the Google ratings, because it is half-way between Chicago and Milwaukee to meet a customer for dinner. I think 4.9 is completely overrated!!!! Maybe most people give rating based on the size of the plates which are generous? In my opinion, food was below the average and my expectation. To be fair, the Lamb Lollypops were good but the Goat Cheese Wontons (all starters) melted completely the goat cheese. I think that these wontons are that tasty than goat cheese toasts (their picture). The walleye was OK but not enjoyable. The worse was the side salad that was dry and not fresh, probably sitting in the kitchen for hours waiting for customers, I barely touch it. When I walked out my boss spontaneously said to me, “the restaurant was just OK”, which confirmed my own thoughts.

*Banquet Event Review*
I had my wedding celebration there. I did even see the room until the day of the event because I knew it was going to be modern rustic. The room was better than I could have imagined. I placed flowers on each table and it was the perfect picture. Booking with the event planner was easy and thorough. They checked in up until the event and answered all the questions I had as the date neared. There were three staff members at the event that were extremely helpful. They took drink orders quickly and efficiently. They resolved any questions I had quickly and my anxiety melted. I did not have to worry about anything. I got so many compliments about the room. I would and will recommend this venue to anyone.

Have eaten here many times and the food is always good. This time we were out for my birthday. The food just wasn’t that good this time. Nothing was hot. The soup was warm at best. I ordered the chicken vesuvio and it was barely warm. I don’t care for lukewarm food. Hot food should be hot. Our waitress was excellent though so there’s that.

Food was great! I had the 10oz Rancher burger with wedges and the wife had the Salmon wrap with sweet potato fries. Burger was juicy and delicious, so were the wedges. The salmon wrap was filled with salmon and the sweet potato fries were larger crinkle cut. The building is timber frame constructed, so it has these grand wooden doors when entering. It has a grand feel, would like to make the trek back there and stop for dinner. Their menu had a lot of options. The hostess and waitress were both very nice. Bathrooms were clean and smelled nice.

Great local establishment owned by a wonderful local family. This time I was celebrating a friend’s 50th birthday in the upper private event space. The space was perfect. Good food. Fantastic service.

I’ve had the same food when they catered the Gurnee Days Honoree dinner. Always tastee.

Wow! Today was our first time going to The Shanty as we live about 45mins away, and were headed to Milwaukee for an event…this was on the way! Let me tell you, it’ll be worth the drive to return! Nothing was bad, the food AND drinks came out quickly and at proper temperature, which is huge for me, as I usually will make dinner and still microwave it when it’s prepared as it isn’t warm enough. That was not an issue here at The Shanty. We had the orange tequila salmon and the lobster ravioli, to drink I had an espresso martini! I will say I prefer them without Baileys, being a lactose intolerant girly, but it was listed on the menu. The food portions were exquisite for the price. Service was prompt and friendly! We were so happy with our experience here, and hope to back.
