What a fabulous hidden gem! We were so glad our B&B host recommended it to us. Cocktails were beautifully balanced and the waitstaff were eager to share the proportional recipes. The dishes were gorgeous as well as delicious. I like to share dishes I had in reviews, but their menu changes frequently, so these may not be available when you go. We enjoyed all the dishes we had – Seabass Kombuje, Tater Tots, Spaghetti with whole anchovies, Fazzoletti with beef short rib and pork belly sugo, butternut squash Ravioli, Tile Fish + Mussel Nage, and both desserts – French Toast and Chocolate Cremuex. I just love inventive American cuisine like this, and beamed throughout our time there. Service was very friendly, helpful and perfect in timing.
We were told that the chef was sous chef under the chef at Maude & the Bear. The food is equivalent at a price point well below Maude, and with reservations usually much easier to obtain.

The Shack is the ultimate lowkey date-night flex — that perfect mix of coastal charm and “we totally just stumbled into this amazing spot” energy. The monkfish was unreal — buttery, delicate, and cooked like the chef had a personal vendetta against mediocrity. The salmon crudo? Silky, bright, and almost too pretty to eat (but obviously, you still do).

And the pastas — wow. Each bite felt handmade and heartfelt, like someone’s Italian nonna moved to the coast and started experimenting with sea air and vibes. The Shack hits that rare balance of refined and relaxed — dim lighting, killer playlist, and food that’s quietly unforgettable. Absolute must for anyone who likes their date nights a little elevated but still effortlessly cool.

Visiting Staunton wanting a uniques dining experience. I hesitated because of a “don’t believe the hype” comment. I am so glad I ignored it and made reservations anyways. My husband laughed when we walked up “is this really where you want to eat?” We were greeted like long time friends. Comfortably sat. Even though there are only about 10 tables in this very small restaurant, it’s very comfortable and intimate. I can’t say enough about our waitress . She was extremely knowledgeable about theme y and helped us choose what I then didn’t know would be the best food I have ever had. Everything is unique, served in perfect portions. My husband asked the waitress at the end to please tell the chefs how amazing everything was down to the last bite. We even had desert and was really glad we didn’t skip it. Amazing service! Amazing delicious unique food and what I wish every dinner atmosphere would feel like. Like being at home at having your own person chef. Left feeling amazing and was shocked at how good everything was. I can’t wait to go again

This restaurant is well worth a visit. It all works, the building is small, old quirky and very cozy inside. The service is friendly, informed, and unpretentious. The food is thoughtfully prepared, delicious, and sourced with attention and respect to the area. I visited twice recently while traveling, and look forward to visiting again!

Wonderful restaurant!!! We had the tasting menu, a pasta and an appetizer. It was a short staffed night, and our waitress was very apologetic. The 1.5 hour wait for the food was totally worth it though. The waitress apologized and gave us two complimentary glasses of wine, and the food was amazing. Worth the wait. Appetizer: soft shell crab, and salmon crudo. Pasta: Spaghetti Pimenton with anchovies; and pappadelle bolognaise. Entree: Sea Bass. Dessert: Olive Oil cake.

Extraordinary. Worth a detour if you get my drift. Service was impeccable. Kind attention to detail in every way and the very best flavors of the season. An absolute pleasure. The fixed price menu was extremely reasonably priced and the best way to enjoy the experience. Tunes playing were also tasty. An intimate gem.

Our 5-course meal was actually 7 courses. What a delight! We felt like judges on a Food Network show! The combinations of flavors and layers of texture were phenomenal, and the suggested wine pairings only accentuated the experience. There were a couple items that we didn’t like (the root veggies were too earthy in flavor), but I wouldn’t know if I hadn’t tried them. Love the focus on fresh ingredients that are locally-sourced. This is farm to table at its finest! The environment was intimate and looked like a diner, but it was still comfortable. Even though we live 90 minutes away, it was worth the drive. We’ll be back for another celebratory visit sometime!

This was our first time visiting since they changed concepts and it did not disappoint. Every single dish was great and some were spectacular. The agnolotti was one of the best pastas I’ve ever had and I’ll dream about the cauliflower. As always, the service was excellent. Can’t wait to come back and try out new dishes as the menu changes.

Loved this tiny and unassuming shack. Small menu with cool choices rich of layers of flavors. We did not take the pick 3 dishes menu and ordered as we liked. We were not interested in the desert. Roasted cauliflower was delicious. The Rockfish Crudo was tasty and tiny. The spaghetti was a bit on the dry side. The wagyu steak was ok. The Agnolotti pasta was a great surprise. We then followed up with a Bianca pizza that was great.

We were a party of 4 and we all had excellent food, perfect service and we enjoyed the entire experience. I am a very critical diner and I was very happy with my meal and how we were treated. The food measures up to the cost and we found the atmosphere very comfortable. I didn’t take photos. Too busy eating! Seasonal menu, beautifully prepared. My speckled trout was flawless! If you can afford to go, you should! Casual, comfortable and delicious!
